What do you like about

They don’t have income tax… that’s all I got. It wil be fun watching their fans and media do a full meltdown after we win.
 
Maybe 10 years ago I was on a road trip passing through the smoky mountains. They're gorgeous. I had to stop for fuel and was surprised to see the gas station had a 50s style diner instead of a convenience store so I went in and ate at the counter. They had hot wings, and they were real ones that came with blue cheese. They weren't busy and I ended up chatting with one of the line cooks about Vols football. He recognized the cuse hat I was wearing and said something or other about Jim Boeheim, but knew we had a real football team too.

Not an amazing story or anything, but that sort of road trip is sooo much nicer than truck stop hot dogs between endless cornfields when you're driving through Ohio. That's what I like about Tennessee.

I remember an old internet joke about Tennessee football fans.

Why do Tennesseans always wear orange?

They wear orange on Saturday for the Vols football game. And on Sunday to go hunting. And then on Monday through Friday when picking up trash on the side of the highway.
 
Jonesborough is pretty fun on Thanksgiving weekend (oldest town in TN)
Piegon Forge and Dollywood is a nice one time thing

My parents have moved down to VA a few years ago and are near TN so we have been a bunch. Really just seems like VA West the parts we've been in and it's mostly boring.

But we were headed west through the Cumberland Gap to Johnson City, Tennessee! Johnson City is a nice little town too ... due east of Knoxangeles as my buddy in Tennessee would call it.

Yeah really like Johnson City, kids love to go to go shopping there and it's a nice place to walk around.

My son lives in Jonesborough.

(He's driving down to the game tomorrow - about 4-1/2 hours).

I'd like to move down there in a couple of years, trying to convince son #2 to go to UT or AppSt, but I tell everyone Tennessee sucks so people stop moving there.

My biggest gripe with Tennessee is the state sales tax.

What's it about 9.5% give or take ? I've crunched the numbers, as someone who lives in NY we'd come out way ahead. Most NYrs already pay 8% sales tax plus income tax. Property taxes are absurdly low, absurdly low.

I prefer Eastern Tennessee, the closer to the mountains the better. It's not for everyone especially if you're in a hurry - lol. But Knoxville to Johnson City east is very nice. and also Chattanooga/Northern GA pretty nice as well.

That sounds right, I had a choice between Tennessee and Florida when I was living in the Atlanta metro as to where I wanted to move to. I went with Florida. Love the Blue Ridge mountains though.

Being A federal Welfare State isn't a positive in my opinion. All the states that don't have state income tax just take more from the other states.

That isn't right .. in 2023 Tennessee paid more than received. Federal support for services is taken from federal taxes and has nothing to do with state income tax so the third bullet is ridiculous in general. Federal programs come from federal taxes, state has nothing to do with it. In 2023 Tennessee was net -$4 billion in the federal tax dole ... which for a state that size is big. Stop relying on garbage AI to put out nonsense.

TN did abolish slavery the Feb before the war ended but Virginia did it in 1864. PA was the first state to do it in 1780 (took a few years to be fully enforced).

The point being, if they don't have adequate state income, they require federal support... They pass their funding requirements to other states that do fully fund themselves.

As for your support of sales tax, that increases the proportional burden on poor people. Rich people save their money, they don't spend it. Meanwhile, the paycheck to paycheck crowd spend every penny, thus pay more taxes than those who save money. It's regressive instead of progressive tax.

But that's besides the point... I was just making fun of Tennessee.

Your point is wrong ... they send more than they receive so they obviously have sufficient tax rails in place ... take the L. As for the tax rate again not accurate rich people still will contribute far more to the tax burden naturally by spending significantly more simply by nature.

The problem with people that are truly affected are those spending beyond their means .. you know the guys living in a double wide but somehow got approved for a load on a $50K pickup truck or dodge challenger.
 
Dollywood is a surprisingly good and fun amusement park.
And got a few friends in Knoxville. That's it
