What Does a #1 Ranking Bring with It?

ESPN's Sports Center: "And meanwhile, #1 ranked Syracuse..."

I'd like to keep it for a month. Then somebody else can have it for a while.

Sell more tickets, home and away. Maybe give more confidence to JS? More visibility which is very good for recruiting.

However, we are a soft number one. A few more weeks would garner more believers.

It brings one Hugh Target !

Who's Hugh Target? Is he a 2013 or 2014 recruit I haven't heard about?

Oh, and one advantage is being able to shove the ranking in the face to all non-Syracuse bball fans.

We've reached #1 ranking at some point in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

Had a top 5 ranking at some point in each of the last three seasons.

Had a top 10 ranking at some point in each of the last four seasons.

Had a top 25 ranking at some point in each of the last 30 seasons going back to '81-82.

the last team to begin the year #1, end the year #1, and then win the NCAA tournament (remember, the final AP poll is taken before the tourney starts) was Duke in 1992. The year before that, UNLV went the entire year ranked #1 before falling to Duke in the FF. The last team to begin and end the year at #1, then win the NCAA tournament was North Carolina in 2007-08, but UNC dropped out of the top spot for a few weeks in the middle of the season.

I'd think UCLA may have gone wire to wire #1 in one of the years they went unbeaten? Obviously that's going way back.

When is the last time a team held the #1 ranking for an entire year? Not that we started at #1 or will end there, just curious.

FWIW, I think we might end up there.

The closest we've come to that recently was 1998/99 when Duke started as #1, then UCONN took over in early December and held the spot until early Feb when the Orange beat them so Duke got the #1 spot again. The teams alternated at #1 a few times in February...As it should have been, they played for the national championship in March.

I think its a disadvantage when we play on the road, the crowd is gonna be that much more rowdy and crazy, and the home team will be that much more jacked up. Which is why im very worried about saturday.

But then the team can do this

probably . . . I know that Indiana went wire to wire in its undefeated season. Probably much more common in those less competitive days.
