What happened to Starling’s shot the last 4 games or so?

He HAS to be the focus of this offense because everyone else is worse.

Obviously he'd be an 8th man on our teams from 10+ years ago.

The other thing is he has Red's trust (and to your point, he's our last standing guy that can dribble at an ok level to create offense). For better or worse, it's JJ and then a huge cliff to the next person.

JJ shoots almost 16 FGAs a game.

Donnie is next at 9.6 and he's toast.

The next person is Eddie at 7.4 and Chris at 7.3

Eddie and Chris don't have ANY handle beyond 2-3 dribbles (to create their own shot).

The closest comp to that type of shot disparity between 1 and 2 was Buddy's last year.

Anyway, this is all to say, this is who he is. He is not a star. He's not very good. He's a solid player at this level. Nothing wrong with that.

But that's it. Root for him. Enjoy him. But he's an ok player. And that's it.

The average player probably has a coach with an offensive system or teammates who are competent at creating opportunities. JJ’s got neither.

He’s clearly not on par with our stars throughout the 2000’s but in recent memory only guys like Donte Green, Judah, Battle and maybe a couple others were made to take more forced shots because the team quality just wasnt there

Im not arguing that he’s the best guy we’ve had in years. I just feel bad that he’s catching a lot of flack for a failing system and a bad staff.

Totally fair. He's definitely swimming against the stream in this system or lack thereof.

I don’t really see anything that different. His mechanics have been an absolute mess the entire time he’s been here.
It's always been terrible

I don't understand d1 players putting less time into their shot form than my fifth and eighth daughter and son. And my kids aren't that good but they want to do it right

The ball has to get above the rim for the target to not be the smallest ellipse

JJ was dominant last year vs a good UNC team. It was fun watching that game at the dome.

I think the issue here is teams don’t have to worry about a Judah, even Q or Brown anymore. JJ and Eddie can dribble and force shots to their heart’s content but we have three players, 2 forwards and our two guard, sitting opposite the ball with cement boots on the three point line.

Every team knows all they have to do is double whoever has the ball because no one else moves.

And how does red respond when we’re down 11-7 a few mins in? Subs in Carlos and Petar lol

Its infuriating and honestly effortless coaching.
Petar rarely even looks at the basket

I remember 2 off-seasons ago when JG3 was basically shown the exit door (nobody knows for sure if Red was behind that) because we got JJ and everyone was like: yes! Finally we got an athlete, a 5 star!, and former McDonalds all-American, a 5 star, and a real athlete! Well guess what…..he can’t shoot, or pass, Or play D. At least Joe could do 2 of those 3.

Big whiff on someone’s ability to judge talent.

He is not getting set. He rushes his shot while he is going sideways or somethings forward - it is quite obvious. I think he feels the weigh of the offense on him and he rushes it - many times, because he has to due to the poor offense of the team.
Exactly right. You can see he's rushing it, still moving forward and not straight up, and pushing the shot too much. He is trying to do everything, and it's too much. When he takes his time (and has the time) for a 3, his accuracy is much better.

Who on this team should be the focus? Just wondering, who you’d like taking those shots?
You’re correct. That’s a big part of our problem. Everyone complains that SU doesn’t run enough stuff to get guys open. Who do you run things for?

Yup, it’s just bad, really bad.

I’d love to see the team be able to run something that resembles an offense let alone customizing it for specific players to get shots (which we have few options anyway).

I think JJ is a legit, solid player despite his weaknesses. He’s not a #1 option though and definitely can’t be tasked with the weight of the offense on his shoulders like I see on the court. Put him on Duke, I bet he looks really good.

You don't run anything for anyone. You run an offensive system and get your shots within your offensive system. The problem with Red and what we have been doing is we have no offensive system besides ISO and a lazy pick and roll, so there is no run something for someone besides giving the ball to someone and letting them go one-on-one.

Look at Duke they just don't give the ball to Flagg every time down and let him ISO they actually run an offense and get open shots with player and ball movement, and when things break down, and only when they break down, Flagg goes get the ball for a late clock ISO.

You have way more kids than I ever knew about. You're the Antonio Cromartie of Western NY.
I can't remember all the names, just like him. So I go with numbers

As suggested by others, there needs to be a system in place that generates shots for everyone and does not rely on one player trying to do too much, especially when it takes that player too much time and energy to get into position to take a shot and is not a good passer. If you want to run the current SU office, I guess JJ is the option, which just highlights the issues with the current SU team.
