What to look forward to

It wasn’t simultaneous. He hit the ground first, then the db ripped it away.
No, the rule is that a receiver has to survive the ground, not just have a moment of control. Think of it this way: if there was no defender there, and the ball went flying away after Cooks hit the ground, then no one would be claiming it was complete. We saw that happen a few times in yesterday's game. Those weren't fumbles because a receiver has to survive the ground.

In this case, the defender ripped the ball away simultaneous to Cooks hitting the ground. It was a very weird play, but the refs got it right.

yeah, we're not likely to make the tourney and Red in his lame duck era, but all is not lost. A few yarns to follow:
  • Donnie's NBA draft stock. He should be a first rounder and at the rate he's playing could become a lottery pick.
  • Kiyan needs another year, which means we can watch as he develops into an absolute showstopper for next year. He's un-guardable at times, he just needs 10-15 lbs and to learn patience with shot selection. Plus his parents are about as loyal as can be and it's fun to see them too.
  • William Kyle isn't done threatening the structural integrity of the hoops. That is fun as all get out.
  • The coaching search is ongoing now. It's basketball's chance for a Mullen thread.
Eh? In what planet is Donnie getting drafted much less a first rounder or lottery pick? He doesn’t have the explosion or the fluidity of an NBA player. He doesn’t have the handle or the jumper or the scoring ability of a stretch 4 and he is not strong enough to play the 5. I think he can be a d league guy, but he would be better off in Europe.

The last Denver td shouldn’t have counted then.
I’ll add, sideline catches are looked at the same way. It’s not enough for a receiver to have the ball in his hands and get 2 feet inbounds. He also has to maintain control of the ball through landing on the ground. If he lands hard and the ball pops out, even if he had two feet down, it’s not a catch.

What If I told you we were tied for 5th in the ACC with NC state at 3-2 AND we have the exact same record AND NcState has zero top 25 wins AND zero Q1 wins.

And before people yell at me about how we’ve played the bottom of the ACC, we’ve played the same 3 bottomdwellers. Then we had Clemson and they had Virginia. We lost to BC on the road and they lost to GT at home. Both terrible losses and both no real good ACC wins.

I think most fans said from the beginning of the year we had to finish somewhere between 4-7 in the ACC. It’s still possible. Every ACC team except Duke is having extremely bad games.

Honestly I think Nc state fans were sold the will wade hype and what has he done so far? His best wins are wake forest and VCU low Q2 wins, which is a joke for how high their metrics are and what they spent to rebound their program. They have no good wins and 1 bad loss. We have 2 bad losses and 1 good win with tennessee.

I think Autry is cooked but it could be worse. We could’ve paid for Will Wade.

This is spot on! Watching him try to cross-over dribble against a BC defender no less was painful. He’s had some success recently about putting his head and shoulder down while driving hard to the hoop with his right hand, but that was against a bunch of stiffs. Wait until him and Cam Boozer match up and then tell me who the lottery pick is.

And for the record I like Donnie and he clearly worked hard on his body this off-season, it’s just that we get blinded from someone having some scoring success and think of them as NBA players or high draft picks. Which we have had zero of lately.

Our current resume is worse than theirs( bad losses) and based on opponents and trajectory neither team would finish better than 8th at this rate and after looking at Quad 1 and 2 results end up out of the tourney.

Well, unless Elon starts an MBA on Mars I would assume it’ll be Earth.

BC was a weird game all around but he puts up 20 points a game with ease. I admit he does need to finish the season strong since he’s coming back injury.

Disagree. Donnie is immensely talented. He’s being held back by his coaching here.

He’s in mocks now. He’s averaging 22 and 9 in conference games. If he continues this I think it’s safe to say he will end up a first round pick. Outside of Boozer who else are you taking in the ACC?

Yesterday, someone backed into my two month old vehicle. Then SU lost. Then the bill’s lost in OT. Then my partner’s idiot kid did an idiotic thing. Banner Saturday.
At least the kid lived up to their reputation. That's gotta count for something.

I really don’t want to defend shady Will Wade. But he’s only in year 1 at NC State, they’re top 25-30 in KenPom, and he has a proven track record as a coach at three previous schools. You could argue that he was helped by all the cheating he did to acquire players, but experts seem to think he’s a good coach.

First, our 3 point shooting is improving since Donnie's return - he draws so much attention that it opens things up for the other guys, and they are making more of their shots.

JJ slashing to the rim is working really well in the offense. In the last 3 games, he's averaging 15 points a game and is shooting 20-35 from the field. That's over 57%.

Donnie and George are unlikely to have 7 TO's in a game again. Donnie's averaging 2.6 a game on high usage. George is averaging about 3.4. George needs to get better, but last night was atypical.

We are still blocking shots, generating steals and rebounding at a high level. Those things win games.

We've still won 8 of our last 11. That's not terrible. We have let a couple get away, but it's not like the last couple years. I feel like we have the chance to win every game when Donnie is in the lineup.

Although this was the easy part of the ACC schedule, I still see a lot of wins out there.

Virginia Tech at home is next. That should be a win. Miami at home after that. They are playing well, but I think we're going to win this one. We've had lots of trouble winning in Miami in the past, but this is a home game.

Three of four after that are road games against NC State, UNC and Virginia. Although we won't be favored in any of those games, I think we could steal a win against either State or UVA.

In between those is Notre Dame at home. That should be a win. Then we have Cal and SMU at home. I think we can win both of those, too.

That would put us at 18-8 when we travel to Duke. Likely a loss, but if Donnie wants to get drafted this year, this is his big audition game against Boozer.

We finish home vs. UNC, @ Wake, @Louisville, home against Pitt. I think we beat Wake and Pitt, giving us 20 wins, and if we can beat North Carolina at home, or upset Louisville on the road, that's 21 wins, and an 11-7 in the league with one of those upsets.

It's still possible to make the dance.
Are you serious? With another coach yes. But with another coach you’d be tourney bound. Did you see the end of the game against BC? No foul on that last 3-point attempt by BC in regulation? Everyone on this board knows you foul.

But Autry does not. And for some reason his players don’t know this either, or Autry told them not to foul. Foul BEFORE the 3-point attempt. My 13-year-old asked me why there was no foul.

Autry in the 90s playing at Syracuse would have fouled that player BEFORE the 3-point attempt. With no input from Boeheim. It’s like Autry forgot how the game is played.

Exactly. I think we’re saying the same thing though. Imagine if you’re an nc state fan and will wade the new coach and team which you paid alot more money for has even a similar resume to Autrys at this point.

You’d be like What. He’s supposed to be the guy. At least we can say we always knew it was a long shot with Autry. He was grandfathered in basically.

Here’s the biggest issue among many as it pertains to retaining optimism… effort and execution.

We’ve had a few games where we had long stretches of both. That has wavered significantly recently. BC plays hard even though they suck. VT and Miami also play hard for 40 minutes and have a lot more talent than any of our last 3 opponents.

There is no sign Red can get an effort like he did vs Houston with how things have played out. So with the sloppy play and the reduced level of effort there is nothing but irrational hope to lean on for a run to be made. VT needs the game against us more than Miami but I doubt Miami has a let down.

I’m a bit depressed. What’s a realistic best case scenario?
I am seriously ignoring all talk of postseason chances, Quad wins, rankings/ratings, odds, and what have you. Whatever happens happens. I’m just focused on each individual game and finding joy in the micro. From good plays, to player development, all the way up to individual game wins.

I’m jaded, and completely expect the AD to contrive some sick rationalization to retain Red, and if/when he is ever replaced, SU will contrive some sick rationale for not spending the money required to get someone effective.

I hope to be proven wrong.

this isnt football - 1 loss doesnt end a season

i think bc is a bad matchup for red

this team is still alive and will have some good wins in the future

does that mean they make the tourney? idk

but theyre 100% still in the mix

This is more of a positivity thread so I’m going to say he can get the effort just not multiple games in a row and it’s also basically random. This team seems to react better to getting punched in the face by great teams then plays down to garbage Q3 teams.

Obvi that’s on poor coaching and player leadership.

The reason Autry and JJ and George and even Kingz are getting dumped on and rightfully so is because they’re so damn inconsistent. Not in the ok sometimes that happens way.

In the way that sometimes
You go to OT with Houston and beat Tennessee and then lose to Hofstra and BC way. It’s insanity. It’s also why the fanbase hates Autry firstly and then JJ next.
