When was the last time Syracuse averaged 70% from FT

According to ESPN.com

2006-07 .695
2002-03 .694

stats don't go further back than 2001-02 on the site.

SUAthletics stats only go back through 1983-1984.

Over 70%:
2000 .705
1996 .705
1994 .715
1985 .715
1984 .751

Worst during that stretch: .600 in 1988. That one's especially galling; we lost nine games that year, and eight of those were by four points or fewer. Eight losses by a total of 13 points. Free-throw shooting was the difference between a great year (and a certain one seed) and a forgettable one.

The SU Athletics website has us at 69.8% through 26 games this season, and...

2010-11: 66.5%
2009-10: 67.7%
2008-09: 64.5%
2007-08: 66.8%
2006-07: 69.5%
2005-06: 64.3%
2004-05: 66.7%
2003-04: 64.3%
2002-03: 69.4%
2001-02: 65.0%
2000-01: 71.5% <---- The last time we shot at least 70% at the line for the season.
1999-00: 70.5%
1998-99: 66.3%
1997-98: 67.6%
1996-97: 64.2%
1995-96: 70.5%
1994-95: 66.2%
1993-94: 71.5%
1992-93: 68.6%
1991-92: 68.5%
1990-91: 64.5%
1989-90: 64.7%
1988-89: 61.1%
1987-88: 60.0% (OUCH!)
1986-87: 65.0%

It goes further back than that, but that's about all the effort I felt like putting into this...lol.

smart should have never been in position to hit a game winner.

It's nice having pretty much every guy on the floor capable of knocking down their FT's and no real stinker (Onuaku, Rick, Terrence Roberts, etc). With Fab, Keita and Xmas all over 60%, despite somewhat limited attempts, we see a much higher success rate. It's shocking how bad Scoop has been and how much better Dion could be.

Is it me, or does it seem we aren't getting to the line nearly as much as we usually do this year? I wish there was a way to separate FTA's under 4 minutes to compare to prior years.
Even then, we're attempting 18.7 FT's per game this year. That's definitely a drop over prior years:
2011: 20.4 FTA per game
2010: 21.3 FTA's
2009: 23.3 FTA's
2008: 24.9 FTA's
2007: 24.3 FTA's

Kind of crazy that our attempts have fallen each of the past 5 years. I think we're seeing a lot more jump shooting and maybe fewer guards driving all the way to the rim for trips to the line. Maybe OREB's are down? Anybody have an answer for the declining attempts per game?

Also, Joseph is driving a lot less this year. Last year, he average 5.5 FTA's per game, this year it's around 4 per game. The way he's been playing over the past week, he's going to start getting more driving opportunities if he keeps knocking down jumpers.

Actually for the NC game year of 1987 we shot 65% which was about average. The following year was 60%.

Agree to disagree. 2002-03's team ended up doing pretty well. They shot 69.4%. :D

I'm not going to disagree with what you wrote. I didn't make a blanket statement such as "ONLY our worst teams had our better FT %s." I do remember at least one of our "poor" teams (read NIT years) were quite adept FT shooters. I also know that many of our "best" teams were poor FT shooting teams.

Btw, what is up with Scoop's FTs this year? He has been Onuaku-like. And DW is a very solid FT shooter until the final minute of close games.

We are definitely shooting fewer FT this year. We're 300th in the country in FT per FGA.

it's focus (or, rather, lack thereof). In the final 60 seconds of games, Scoop is 7/9 (and Dion is 4/4). Clearly, he can knock them down when he is focused.

No clue. It is awful to watch. He looks like he's throwing a beach ball at a solo cup.

I guess you arent counting the final minute of an overtime period if you have Dion going 4/4.

Actually Dion missed both free throw attempts at the end of OT against Georgetown. Could have put us up 5 with :02 to go. You could argue that they weren't likely to get off a length of the court shot with the time remaining, so they weren't critical, but if he made them it would have definitely put the game out of reach.

yes, final minute of regulation. SU athletics keeps stats detailing final 5:00 to 2:00, 1:59 to 1:00, o:59 to 0:00, and OT.

It's hard to detect a strong trend there, although we have been behind the national average for most of the last decade. The average number of free throws taken per game is about 20. 70% is 14 made free throws. 13 made is 65%. 12 made is 60% so each made free throw moves you up by +.050. We were better or worse than the national average by signicantly more than that only in 1987-88 and 1988-89. People remember particular teams that were bad or games where we had some big misses but the overall record isn't that bad. I also thing that people over-estimate the "normal" free throw percentate, which has never reached 70.0%. The big thing if that if you have a guy who gets to the line alot, you want him to make a good percentage and if you've got a guy who is automatic, you want to get him the ball in the final minute.

Actually Dion missed both free throw attempts at the end of OT against Georgetown. Could have put us up 5 with :02 to go. You could argue that they weren't likely to get off a length of the court shot with the time remaining, so they weren't critical, but if he made them it would have definitely put the game out of reach.

He did it again last night!!!
