You have it right. He’s a high school journalist about to be accepted in Newhouse.
As a graduate of Newhouse I have a bit of an issue calling someone a HS journalist.
It's like saying a kid is a HS Accountant or a HS Engineer.
That's why you graduate from Newhouse, to be trained to become journalist.
The trouble with social media is we think any guy in his underwear, with a keyboard, and a strong opinion is
a journalist. I hope it's still an earned professional title

I think most people understand the distinction between calling someone a journalist and a HS journalist. There is a difference, at least to me.

I almost put journalist in quotes but decided it would be largely redundant. Good for you for fighting for respect for real journalists though!

I was a high school journalist. Sports Editor. Tireless investigative reporter. Didn't leave any jock unsniffed.

(That didn't come out quite the way I intended...)

When I interviewed Sebastian Junger for a podcast, we were talking about his experiences as a war reporter and he said this:

“You don’t need a certificate to be a journalist. You just need to go to where things are happening and start reporting.”

While there are a bunch of content creator dweebs who claim to be a journalist but hold no journalistic ethics, I am loathe to gatekeep journalism. If someone puts in the effort and ethics, then they’re a journalist.

Content makes a journalist, graduating from Newhouse- commendable as it may be, does not. Graduating from medical school and passing the boards makes a MD….
Content creator should never be the minimum standard for being a journalist.
That is the major mistake we all make thinking content or any and all human communication falls under journalism. We need other words to describe the content creators of today.
Unfortunately I may even concede that most people don't even want to consume process based journalism any longer but rather just consume propaganda and extreme rhetoric. Studies have proven that No one wants sober, thoughtful, nuanced analysis, but would rather consume the 'car crash' and loud content belittling or mocking of a perceived opponent.
