Not so sure about that, given that you're advocating limiting the search only to in-house candidates, and hiring the lowest common denominator candidate.

ADJW didn't ascend to the highest pinnacle of corporate America by thinking small and handcuffing himself with artificial constraints.
He also didnt do it by going outside current ESPN employees when it came time to make important hires.

Patently false.

He identified top candidates whether they were from inside or outside of the organisation, and hired the best people he could. That's what smart executives do -- and it's what he'll do when it comes time to replace Boeheim.

Shes a He and JW is going to hire Hop Red or Gmac. Ill bet you a slice and a beer at the Varsity.

Three factors to consider when hiring :
1. Money
2. Money
3. Money
When J B was hired there was plenty of talk about the “cheap hire” how wrong could they be ,hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

If I was guessing of the 3 named, I would say GMac...just a hunch.

Brad Stevens would be interesting, imo...he's not gonna last in the NBA for a long time, imo...

Better in college.
cough, cough...like I was saying...

I personally don’t want anyone coaching SU basketball that has not been a head coach before. I would be happy to have GMac or Autry as our coach if they demonstrated success at a mid major program first. Go somewhere and show us you can make a program better after 3-4 years than when you got there.

I would like to see real data that outside hired assistants did better than in house promotions because I am not sure it's exactly true. And after this spring I am more certain than ever that the next HC here is going to be one of the 3 guys we always speak about based on the fact this spring...

Indiana...Hires an alum
UNC...Hires an alum
Duke...Hires an alum

Indiana and Duke couldn't even get outside guys to bite.

My vote is for Deshaun Williams. He was great at uniting the family.

I agree it will probably end up being an in-house hire. I just think it's best for the program to not have tunnel vision and to consider lots of options. This program, after 7 years of being on or close to the bubble, could benefit from an infusion of fresh new ideas, recruiting connections, offensive/defensive schemes, etc.

Hop is first call.

Red and Gmac get interviews. Don’t be surprised if Griff does too.

you guys seem like you’re not paying attention to what is going on around us. Duke and UNC just handed the reins to handpicked guys by departing coaches...and you don’t think that happens here? Lol

JB was an assistant. An assistant at NC won a National Championship. You are correct. There are no sure fire hires. Many schools have been torched hiring the Hot name in basketball and football. My point in hiring Red is that unless we have a sure fire outsider why risk destroying 50 years of a winning tradition.
If it is Red, I hope he hires a M2M guru and a Big Guy guru.

The question is: would GMac stay on or does he move on to a NE midmajor to get some HC experience and lay in wait?

One of the hardest jobs to take is replacing a legend. Red might only have 4 years to get to a Sweet 16.

If Hop has another losing season at UW he is likely off the board.

We don’t know if those guys would run things the same way. Hopkins did a lot of different things his first two years in Washington and was quite successful.

I don’t think the candidate pool is going to be that interesting when the time comes. It wasnt for Duke or Indiana. Why would it be for us?

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of current and former peer programs that would gladly trade their last 7 years vs ours:
Pitt, BC, Wake, Miami, Georgetown, St John’s, Seton Hall, Rutgers.

You make that 5 years instead of 7, and you can add UConn to the list.

We have not had a losing season in FIVE
DECADES.

Ask Pitt about getting rid of a successful coach who “wasn’t winning as much as they’d like” and see how that goes.

We have much higher standards than all those programs.

Hopkins resume at Washington is actually fairly similar to Dino Babers in the sense that they both had one fantastic year, a couple blah years, and one horrific year last season.

Brent Axe wrote an article today (which is now behind a paywall) where he basically said Red is the next coach. He kind of buried it in the article but I found it pretty bold to make that statement. I know he may not be as plugged in as others or the national guys but assuming he does talk to people up on the Hill and gleans some insight that's an interesting statement.

Agree AZ. I saw this nugget in The Athletic article today on K’s retirement:
“Krzyzewski went 38-47 in his first three seasons at Duke, prompting widespread calls among the program’s boosters for his ouster.”
If people think the book has been written on Mike Hopkins’ head coaching career, they’re sorely mistaken.

Different era, different conference. If Hop has another losing season, he theoretically would be around .500%

I'm pretty certain SU would interview him but I doubt he gets hired.

The guy was an SU assistant coach for 22 years. He was one of the best recruiters in all of college basketball, highly respected, has recruiting connections all over the East Coast, and he’s commanding and charismatic and connects with players. It just doesn’t make sense to give the job to McNamara or Autry, who are vastly less experienced and have never been head coaches before.

Gee go figure
