Why doesn't the band do this any more at the start of games?

The one time I attended Midnight Yell at Kyle Field it was more energetic and arguably better attended than half of SU's football games each season.
I took my son on a college tour there when we lived in Texas. I couldn't believe the number of students who would stop and ask if we need help...as we stood on a sidewalk staring at a map. In Texas you are either Team UT or Team A+M.

It's truly remarkable. 25-30k in the stadium on Friday night at midnight.

And of course they won't play each other anymore because of money. So incredibly stupid to let a bunch of old rich dudes rob an entire state of that experience.

I was impressed. Nice and helpful people (that ROTC ethic seemed to permeate the place, at least with the demos I bumped into) and a lot of fun. Not the prettiest campus, but definitely a memorable atmosphere.

And after that they played Jesus Christ Superstar. It was great (like everything SSS plays).

But, again, something I guess...

I can see how in today’s more PC times (I refuse to use the W word) -
they chose to do away with those 2 songs post-game.

But - no reason they couldn’t do something like Queen’s “We Are The Champions” after a W.

Or “All I Do Is Win” for something less ancient.

They took it away in 1989. For goodness sake JCS was a huge Broadway hit. Removing that stuff is something Georgetown would do.

Does the band still do the drum solo leading into the standing and clapping before hoops tipoff?

Alas, that went away in about 1995 when they introduced canned music. Most recently I don't know what they've been using. For a long time it was Welcome to the Jungle.

I mean, if the staff can say all sorts of religious stuff and groups of players make a show of praying in the end zone, I think it's OK for the band to share some popular culture choices with Jesus or Amen in the lyrics. I'm not sure what demo the school's looking to pander to protect with that decision.

Yeah, those two aren't exactly deep dives into the hymnal. But whatever lets keep cranking out Axl Rose instead...

Students and fans should chant C U S E Cuse, Cuse, Cuse ad nauseam to get under the skin of the opposing players and fans…similar to the annoying Jets chant throughout their games. Could be a part of the overall Orange fan participation in the Dome.

This. {Thumbs up!}

Someone said it maybe earlier in this thread or elsewhere but most of the students coming to SU are first generation Syracuse fans. They aren't indoctrinated in the traditions of SU so when they arrive on campus it's usually disinterest/confusion in what they are trying to do.

This isn't 4 generations of state university knowledge or even generational catholics rooting for ND and everything going on there.

I do think the Sour Citrus was the best pep band in the country and always felt like when the game was good the crowd was receptive to their musical cues and getting excited for the traditional songs they did.
That's true, however, its those students that seem to jump on participatory things with the most eagerness. Like, I fully acknowledge that shaking keys is lame and dumb, but at least its DOING something, and the students did it.

There are a lot of generational SU fans who have no interest.

We dont have any traditions here. We have things we do, and things that eventually go away. But we do not have a tradition.

I certainly agree we dont seem to have any insofar as football participation. That song was one of the few I can recall. Wish it would come back

The hero we need.

I get you.

Syracuse basketball fans at least have that deal where they stand and clap until SU scores. Its no great shakes, but its a unifer and gets them engaged, and they DO it. Syracuse football doesn't have anything like that. And not to belabor a point, but like it or not, and even if only a fraction did, the closest thing football had in my memory was that kickoff song.

I hope that the university does something cool with lights, music, and introductions at least.
It's been mentioned before, and people don't like hearing it, but I've been to several other D1 stadiums, and the Dome is the only place I've been where you get scolded by people for standing on 3rd down. I've literally had people angry at me for standing too much. Kind of the opposite of what goes on other places.

I dont know the answer to that. Hoping maybe better live video in the Dome with the new scoreboards may help? People can see those if someone is standing?

I often find myself stuck. The person behind me isnt standing, so I dont want to block them. But the person in front of me is. So I end up half standing to try to see. It ends up looking less like energy and more psoriasis.

Sitrus still plays Superstar after wins.

The one tradition that had high participation: the "hey, you suck" and "...-em up, -em up, -em up, Go SU..." chants during "Rock & Roll Part 2" was taken away.

We are a primarily a liberal private college in a liberal city in a liberal state...filled with students from the BOS-WAS who grew up pro fans if at all. We will never be like a large state school in a Red State with fan fervor.

I always associate the Tomahawk Chop with the Atlanta Braves of the late 90's. The So What, Who Cares... was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. Maybe it was because it was the only sanctioned time that I could swear around my parents. I guess stuff like that is easier to do in an intimate basketball arena instead of a cavernous Dome. I miss the likes of the Dome Ranger, The Dome Knitter and Dome Eddie. Nowadays, the University would be more concerned with liability and wouldn't want someone running around the Dome for fear that they'd fall, get injured and sue.

I don't know what the answer is other than watching your team win is fun. If SU would average 8-9 wins a year, more people would attend and I'm sure the atmosphere would be better. Losing far more games than you win and bowl games being a once in a decade opportunity have lowered attendance numbers, fan expectations and excitement.

Oh I feel yah, I’ve decided that I don’t really care anymore if a make people mad for standing, I want to see what’s going on and cheer.

I mean, I feel a little bad but not really, everyone should be standing.

Speaking of, I can’t wait to be standing, cheering in the dome very soon

I'm not confrontational enough to want to deal with that for 2 hours. I do try to get aisle seats so I can stand there in a pinch
