- Because they are USC and we aren’t. Every player they send onto the field was a higher recruited player than the guy he’ll be staring at across the line of scrimmage. Do we even have anyone who would start for them?

- Because they are going for the national championship. Last year we hung with them for a while when they were on probation and had little to play for beyond their natural pride and competitiveness. The worst thing that could have happened to us was the Trojans losing their #1 ranking to Alabama when they beat Hawaii by 39 points. They are really going to want to do a number on us.

- When a mid-level program like SU takes on a top level program like USC in a two game series the best the mid-level program can expect is maybe one semi-competitive game. That was last year’s game, folks.

- I think our defensive backfield this year will be a lot better than the one we had last year, (Jeremi Wilkes and Durell Eskridge for Philip Thomas and Keon Lyn and Brandon Reddish over Kevyn Scott), but they are still in the developmental stage. Here comes Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, one of the best combinations of wide receivers in college football history. And Matt Barkley who had 39TDs and 7 interceptions last year and will probably do better than that this year. Too much, too soon for the SU D-backs.

- The Trojans had a 1000 yard runner back from last year, Curits McNeal, who gained 1005. He’s now back-up to Silas Redd, who gained 1241 for Penn State last year. (Lane Kiffin had no hesitancy in going after Redd once the scandal broke, unlike Doug Marrone with Curtis Dukes.)

- We did a loot of good things on offense vs. Northwestern. Don’t expect a repeat vs. USC. Last year we came out firing and Ryan Nassib completed his first 11 passes. But hey adjusted to it and he was 14 for 26 the rest of the way, with only one TD pass to 5 for Barkley. When they stop the short stuff, what have we got to answer with?

- They are better than last year. They started three freshman linebackers last year. The outside guys, Hayes Pullard and Dion Bailey, were freshman All-Americans. Lane Kiffin said that when he moved Jamar Dawson to middle linebacker late in the season “the defense’s character changed”. It was pretty good to begin with. But their best defensive player is All-American safety TJ McDonald. Cornerback Nickell Robey isn’t far behind. We won’t get those big numbers we had last week. But they might.

- Our not very special teams are sure to give even more big plays than they did against Northwestern.

- People are saying we should try slowing the game down to keep the score down. I hope we don’t do that. If we try to do what we are not good at to achieve a goal other than victory, we have no chance at all.
