Wide Receiver Issue

You better unglaze those eyes because those who don't learn from their past mistakes are doomed to repeat them. I brought up Gerg because the whole reason he was hired was to fulfill this fan wish, high-flying offense in the dome, it tanked. Remove the Dungey factor and Dino's offense has also tanked. It hasn't worked for any QB on the roster outside of Dungey. Maybe for a game here or there but the overall body of work without ED is garbage.

My prevailing thought is that we have not been able to attract the kind of talent to run those systems against other P5 teams even with coaches dedicated to those systems, even with career numbers for guys who ran those systems like Dungey, AET, and Ish. If we cant' consistently bring in those types of guys every year then we are doomed to have seasons where we can't pass for a TD in two OOC games. Score 7 points against the likes of Rutgers and have 25k people in the stands when conference play opens.

That's just not true

"Gross, who took over in early December for the retiring Jake Crouthamel, said he wanted a defensive-minded coach, and Robinson has made an impact more than once. His Kansas City defense in 2003 produced 36 sacks, 25 interceptions and forced 37 turnovers, giving the Chiefs a plus-19 turnover margin, tops in the NFL."

Shafer pulled the same punt routine in a close game against Pitt if my memory serves. and no one is saying Shafer should have pulled all his starters in the Louisville game, just the freshman QB who almost had his head taken off several weeks earlier and had his whole career ahead of him. As was pointed out, Shafer pulled him the week before against FSU and should have done it again. Not defending Dino in general, he needs to go if things don't turn around the rest of this season and his punt call last week was abysmal. I have posted it many times, Dino 2019-2021 is not the guy we hired and the guy who was our coach from 2015-2018.
Do you think the Lions should have pulled Goff last week down 38-10? That's a 4TD difference and they had been beating their butts all over the field. Well Campbell didn't and they almost pulled off one of the most historic comebacks in NFL history. Why play the game if you're just going to quit? I don't remember the FSU thing, I was probably pissed that we gave up when we did if it was close enough.

And honestly, you're not trying to defend Dino so we have gone off on some tangent which isn't in line with the current discussion and I took us here. My bad. I just think I see Shafer's tenure differently than most. He played one season with a starting QB and went to a bowl game. If memory serves me right, Hunt was supposed to be the starter that final year, not Dungey. As I remember Hunt ruptured his achille's in Shafer's 2nd year, made a comeback only to suffer another season ending injury at the start of year 3.

Duuuude you got me. All I remember from back then was 'USC of the east' and 'WCO' and high-powered offense being advertised on the radio. Can't remember what I was drinking in those day but glad I stopped.

no worries, this board is all about tangents, it makes for an interesting day. you are correct, Hunt played in the first few games in 2014 and then was out for the season and they had to go to Long(ugh), then in 2015 he was lost in the first game I believe and then Dungey took over

Wide Receiver has been an issue for years. That should tell us we need a run based O and running QB. Yes, that will be less exciting to watch but going 7-6 is better than 4-8. Look at what we have had the last 18 years. I would say close to 1/3 of those years we don't have a good #1. And another 1/3 we only have a #1 but no #2. I would say 2012, 2015, and 2016 were the only years we legit had 3 guys.

Top 3 WRs in yards by year:

2004- Jared Jones, Steven Gregory, Andre Fontenette
2005- Rice Moss, Tim Lane, Nick Chestnut
2006- Mike Williams, Rice Moss, Taj Smith
2007- Mike Williams, Taj Smith, Rice Moss
2008- Donte Davis, Lavar Lobdell, Marcus Sales
2009- Mike Williams, Marcus Sales, Alec Lemon
2010- Van Chew, Marcus Sales, Alec Lemon
2011- Alec Lemon, Van Chew, Dorian Graham
2012- Alec Lemon, Marcus Sales, Jared West
2013- Ashton Broyld, Jarod West, Chris Clark
2014- Jarod West, Steve Ishmael, Ben Lewis
2015- Steve Ishmael, Brisly Estime, Erv Philips
2016- Amba Etta-Tawo, Erv philips, Steve Ismael
2017- Steve Ishmael, Erv Philips, Devin Butler
2018- Jamal Custis, Sean Riley, Taj Harris
2019- Trishton Jackson, Taj Harris, Sean Riley
2020- Taj Harris, Anthony Queeley, Nykeim Johnson
2021- Taj Harris, Anthony Queeley, Sharod Johnson
And of all those guys, Mike Williams was the only one who was a good NFL player. We’ll see what happens with Jackson.

In our heyday we had Kane, Moore, Ismail, Harrison, Johnson...the drop off is nuts. You’d think by accident we’d get one WR in the last decade who would be an NFL starter.

If QBs hit wide open Taj in game one, a wide open Jackson game 2 for a TD, we don't have problems. Lots of open guys running around including TEs who are invisible.

True, injuries happen.

And yes - Warrick Dunn is an exception (who proved the rule) as a 'small' RB who was great in college (& Pros).

But, there's a reason RB's typically are at least 190's and usually 200+ lbs - so they can take the beating.

Even though Jawhar would have been a "great slot guy" - HE DID NOT WANT TO BE A WR.
You cannot force a dude to play a position he doesn't wanna play.

And he likely saw that with Tucker now entrenched as RB1, and guys like Lutz, Howard, Adams, Hough also in the RB room, that him wanting to be a RB wasn't going to get him on the field here as much as he desired.
So he left.
No need to shout. I know he didn't want to be. You don't have to keep repeating yourself. I get that you can't force a guy to change positions, but it happens all the time and often for the better. Dee Brown was a QB when he arrived. So was Kevin Johnson. Erv Philips made the move. It often benefits the players.

This is a discussion about wide recievers. The comment I responded to pointed out that Dino has yet to recruit one out of high school that has matched anything the transfers or fuys already on the roster did. I was lamenting that we may have had one had he agreed to make the move.

Chill out.

It's a bit of a combo. Taj and others get missed often when they're open. Taj also drops way more than any #1 receiver, or #2 or #3 for that matter, should.

Tebucky Jones was bigger, faster and went on to be a 1st round draft choice as a safety.

If they hired a defensive coordinator to run a high flying offense they got what they deserved lol

To run it? No but he did come here with the premise that he was bringing the WCO with him, it hurts to type his name, but Pariani was the whiz who couldn't run it.

Yeah, and he had the discernment to understand a change was his best opportunity.

I am really hoping that alot of these freshman backups who were pretty sought after guys in high school hope can step up and really take advantage of the scheme cause Harris can't do it by himself! These other receivers don't have it
Thank you for the likes guys! I was saying the same thing at the start of the Albany game & then finally Alford

I was saying this it's for a few weeks now and at the start of the Albany game I was getting pretty agitated that the same thing was going on and all of a sudden he put Alford in and they go all the way 82 yd for a touchdown . So I am hoping that outhat Alford & gadson as well as Courtney Jackson and Taj Harris, that could give the Opposing defenses something to worry about
