Wildhack Press Conference | Dec 18

We showed P5 we care about football by extending Dino then went out and go 1-10? What other P5 job could you go 1-10 in year 5 and keep your job? But don;t worry Wildhack said today it should only be a short turn around to get things back on track?
This isn’t the SEC, we can’t afford Dino’s buyout right now while in the midst of a global pandemic that’s significantly impacted Athletics revenue and likely has donors reconsidering their current stances for the short term

How the hell do you not extend a coach after a top 15 ten win season?

Auburn’s off in la la land with their current move.

This AD has overseen a 6-17 football program the past two years and tied up this head coach with an unpalatable $17 million buyout in a contract restructure.

Please explain to me how that equals, "great AD"? I've got some other descriptions.
Can you provide a link to verify the $17 million buyout figure you quote as fact? Thanks

I'm not on his side, but the number comes from Thamel. (Also, I'm all for new voices here, but why do they all have to act like know-it-alls?)

Anyway, here's the money line from Thamel in the linked article (Dated October 17):

"Don’t expect Babers’ job to be in jeopardy. He has at least four full years remaining on his contract this year, and the most conservative estimates of his buyout are that he’d be owed at least $17 million if he was fired after this season. That number would scare a well-heeled SEC athletic department, and Syracuse is decidedly not one of those."

Tell me which AD would not have offered this contract to keep a coach who won 10 games at SU? Something that hasnt been done since 2001. Keep in mind other schools wanted to interview Dino.
What other schools wanted to interview dino, that gets thrown out alot but look at the schools with openings that year and you don't see many places that would've been much of a step up. Overall JW has done a good job, obviously if he had a do over he wouldn't have given dino the extension.

Personally I wanted an extension but the one he got was to big, that would've been my opinion then FWIW. I just don't see the schools in that year that wanted dino badly which brings me to say a pay bump add a year not a full new contract but I get to play monday morning QB and jw didn't.

Thanks LeMoyne. At least Thamel is acknowledging that is an estimate. I don't think the actual figure is on public record.

Yeah, I can see where that statement can be interpreted as such, or at least where even if we get a body or two, it likely won't be nearly as impactful as desired/needed.

Wildhack said he's looking for "development" from the football program. "How do we get them in the strength and conditioning program, get them bigger, get them stronger? How do we develop their football skills?"

This remark stood out for me somewhat, and not really in a good way. I mean, aren't these expectations simply garden variety type, and one that should be an auto-built given of any football program, especially at this level? Is he honestly asking this? How do we get them in the strength and conditioning program, bigger, stronger, faster, etc.? How do we develop their football skills? Perhaps, I'm reading this incorrectly, but for me, this is a pretty big red flag if our AD and top football brass are asking how to do this vs. the standard knowing, implementing that plan of action, and getting it done.

What red flag? Those are the questions you ask in any continuous improvement based organization.

Pretty standard stuff.

I asked another writer-in-the-know in an online chat about what Thamel said, and he said he didn't have concrete information, but as far as he knows, Thamel is in the right ballpark. (The writer I asked very well connected, but the Northeast isn't his bread and butter).

Also, as others have pointed out (and I have only recently learned), if we were to fire Babers, it is likely that only a % of that buyout would be due within 30 days, and the remaining amount owed would go down if Dino were to be fired and then take another job.

No, but I am not a homer either. I don't feel the same way about BB program. There has been very little success in FB. Most of it in one year is attributable to a QB Shafer recruited.

We can put this to bed asap. It's a disservice to the coaches, staff, other players, etc. Eric was hugely important, but we didn't even get to 10 wins with him. It took his backup to come in and win two games.

Dumb stuff.

Well since he's not really a fan and doesn't follow the team how we he know that.

Man you are just insufferable. I would love to go to a party with you sometime. I bet it is a blast.

I think about 90% of the discussion that refers to why the SEC can fire and pay out a huge sum during a pandemic misses on the hyper-booster model that these teams have in place.

These schools trade a fair amount of control over to cabals of rich guys. Sometimes it works out and sometimes you end up at their mercy. We get more autonomy and can offer more stability - but we can't just jump at a new HC and pay out. In my eyes, it's a feature not a bug.

You should not have to ask those specific type questions when it is at the core of your organization's MO. It should already be a know how or "pretty standard stuff." Honing, enhancing, building upon, etc. that core, okay, but not wondering how to do the foundation's main requirements.

Everything that happens is not reported. On top of that, there always opportunities to take lateral jobs if you are working under a administration that didnt hire you or one that doesn't have the same plan or vision as you. Dino had leverage. SU is considered a hard job. ( I hear that from several D1 coaches). The extension needed to show a long term commitment to him. Wildhack also needed to show that he's an AD that believes in what you are doing. In hopes of making SU a place where up and coming coaches will come here in the future.

Good for you, JW.

That's going to anger a lot of agendas on this forum.

I don't know about agendas here or if it's nothing more than an author's own thinking. What I do believe, is that whatever side of the fence one sits on relative to Dino, etc., they are here first and foremost as passionate fans of SU football. And, ultimately, I think the vast majority here mainly wish to see their beloved SU football team win and be successful on the gridiron more times than not. I believe that agenda trumps anything & everything by far. Just my $02.
