Wildhack retiring July 1

Reading between the lines:

First, JW has already informed Red he will be dismissed at the end of the year. The school just decided to keep it quiet.

Second, I think they most likely have Hodgson lined up to replace Red.
I agree. To your first point. Both Wildhack and Autry said on the radio they have talked multiple times recently about "big picture".

Your boss does not call you to say good job buddy, see you next year when you've just went 1-5 and lost to the worst team in the league.

SU and JW are as Corporate as it gets and this is big business. JW was calling to put him on PIP which is the formal conversation to say your job is at risk and you will be let go shortly due to lack of performance. For those not working in larger companies this is very much how it works everywhere now.

I’m not a ‘margin of loss’ kinda guy. I guess we could have expected 2 more wins. But in the end, a lost season is a lost season. Marginally more entertainment doesn’t factor into it much for me.
I’m not a margin of loss guy either, but O would like to see a team remain competent and competitive in the face of adversity.

It certainly hasn't seemed like it over the past 25 years.
I agree but to be fair I don't think most AD's have done well unless they were given tons of money and landed in a megaconference.

I would ague back even 10 years ago most of what an AD did was dealing with the occasional scandal or firing/hiring.

Now days it feels like a 24/7 365 day a year money begging job. Then complaining to the NCAA how we're getting hosed by the mega conferences. Again all money driven.

llandz - said both hires were already at SU. That would indicate that Tom Theodorakis isn’t the hire……? Or am I missing something.
TBF, many disparate opinions/statements have been made. I am guessing some are incorrect, but this is what they have been told. And remember, opposing statements have been made by posters "in the know".

That tells me, either:
  1. nobody really knows what is going on; or
  2. in order to 'protect the innocent', EVERYTHING is being held so close to the vest that even the insiders and their sources don't know what is going on.

To piggy back on this -- If you are forced into hiring an inexperienced Autry you then definitely do not go and hire an inexperienced football coach.

I don't think people appreciate how big a missed opportunity 2024 was in football. We absolutely had the NFL talent/favorable schedule to win what was a horrible ACC and only managed to go 5-3 in conference/against P4 teams with NFL talent running all over the field.

Fran lost the fair weather fan a long time ago because even the wins in 2024 were absolutely excruciating to watch. UNLV was a comedy of errors, GT/NCSU/Cal we had to cling on for dear life after completely outplaying them, Wazzou was so decimated they had no business being in that game at all, hard to watch FCS win, Uconn, Ohio's "NFL draft prospect" RB, and a miracle comeback OT win against a very bad Vtech who was playing with a backup QB (I was told this year mediocre teams with backup QBs could not be competitive). Miami was the only win where you could sit back and say "yeah, our guys played well, that was enjoyable."

If we start anything other than 4-0 this year the dome will be a morgue, because the fanbase (other than the people excited we paid a ton of money to a developmental 5 star WR) is already long checked out on Fran. Even when it was good it wasn't a fun product to watch, which is wild to say given the offensive numbers we put up.

It's another debate entirely but I suspect the poor bball attendance is not solely about bball -- it's the fans telling the university "we find your entire sports product unacceptable."

If they're talking about the west pointers they can drive up to CNY in 3 and half hours and home before anyone knew they were even there.

Insiders and their people can say they're already there. They could've been up for the day.

There was nothing to play for. Was he supposed to come up with an entirely new offense to just lose by less?

Anyway, to the point, this last football season doesn’t reflect poorly on Wildhack. The coaching hire was right, or at least appears right so far.
yes. That's exactly what he's supposed to do... He is supposed to put his team in a position to win games. People didn't pay for tickets, donate to NIL and to the school to watch a coach quit when the going gets tough. DART should be followed by the coach who came up with it, no?

Don't you have an athletic department to get out of the red?

$500M+ ain't chump change, though, I'll give you that. Kudos.

or, equally likely, situations are fluid and its possible that one or all information from the insiders are outdated. Considering John announced his retirement yesterday its likely that whatever succession plan they have in mind wasn't officially official (as they say) until yesterday.

I swear half this board doesn't read.

1) It's been posted repeatedly that Heather Lyke will not be our next AD.

2) It's been posted repeatedly that Mike Haynie will be our next Chancellor.

Both of these things have come from posters who have shared correct information over and over again.

Needless to say, folks are free to deny the accuracy of the posts. But at least read them, process that info, and use it to inform your own posting. You know, instead of being unhinged.

Do I have to address this EVERY TIME Bill Simmons talks about Wildhack? Come on, man.
Seriously, can someone find the multi-paragraph post I shared here a month ago when Bill spouted off so that elimunelson can read it again. It's exhausting.

I tried to point that out and sent him to your post when I posted this

When you click the link it says vice chancellor but... who knows!

I think your post is a joke. I am the fairweather fan. Fran alone got me to the GT game which we crushed them, also out to Vegas to UNLV which was one of the best games ever with Lequint's OT score and then I'm still kicking myself for not going to the Miami finale.

I was at those games in person. Can pretty much guarantee you weren't.

My concern is that I would not take a managerial job while not knowing who my immediate boss would be and on top of that a new CEO is coming. I cant imagine a new AD not having input here

Any idea why they haven't announced it yet?

That's fair. I'm of the believe that JW is really only making the decision on the Autry firing and the timing of that which is right around the corner now. Basically that wasn't even a JW decision, Autry decided that based on his performance. So really JW is just deciding the actual day and how Autry is let go.

The hiring will be a formal search ongoing now with a search committee. Likely JW as well the as the new AD along with new Chancellor input and members of the board. I really doubt the new AD will not be in the loop and the eggs are all in one basket with JW.

I don't agree with this take. "Excruciating to watch?"

In 2024, we had the best QB in college football slinging it all over the place. He threw for 34 touchdowns, and we scored 34 points a game!

Even this year, we won at Clemson with Angeli. Sure, they had a down year, but that's like us winning at Penn State.

I think the end of the 2025 season, the coaches laid a big egg, not even being somewhat competitive behind a more running oriented offense. But I don't think people are "checked out on Fran" at all.

I think this year is the real test. He has to win at least 8 games, and then he's back on track.
My complaint was the OC quit on the team, and Fran didn't correct that last year. He better have made it clear to Nixon in the off season that it will never be acceptable again.

*assumptions.

Wildhack takes the blame for the Autry hire but there’s no blame needed for Fran. He lost his QB. The backup QB sucked, but it’s Syracuse. Even in our ‘prime’ we weren’t the type of school that was going to have the depth to do much with a backup QB, with few exceptions. It’s not the kind of loss football teams except the elite schools are expected to overcome.

We’re likely not in the market for a ‘top’ coach, depending on how that’s defined. We’re going after up-and-coming midmajor coaches. It seeming more and more likely Hodgson is our guy, which won’t be influenced by the new AD or Chencellor (he’d come if a potato was his boss).

Our backups was a 4* From LSU and a 4* in Jakhari - Its not like he didn't try to get back ups. and thats as good of "talent" as we have ever had. Evaluations not withstanding. No real QB Coach to evaluate is also a huge deal.

yes. That's exactly what he's supposed to do... He is supposed to put his team in a position to win games. People didn't pay for tickets, donate to NIL and to the school to watch a coach quit when the going gets tough. DART should be followed by the coach who came up with it, no?

How do you put your team in a position to win without a QB? Should he have had a better backup QB available? Sure. Could he have had a better backup QB? Maybe.

I can only guess people are taking issue with the defense giving up a billion points. But defense and offense in football aren’t silo’d like they are in other sports. If your offense can’t move the ball, your defense is going to get rocked.

You figure it out. Dino won with a tight end playing QB...

It can also be true that the loudest voices on social media also do not go to games and do not donate a penny to NIL.

The vast majority care and watch on the couch and that’s cool but they do not give a penny and then expect to be heard and patted on the back for their sacrifice.
