Will Syracuse Football Ever Catch a Break?

Who the hell is arguing that? And I most certainly prefer our history over theirs, though they have the same amount of NC's as we do. The whole argument that people have been trying to push is that we are still some football name and that McDonald moving from WR coach here to WR coach there is some sort of downgrade which is false.

I never once mentioned McD myself but you keep trying to convince me that NCSt is a bigger name than SU.

Show me one single time in which I have said that NC State is a bigger name than Syracuse. If there's a single one then I will admit that I'm wrong and give up on this. Syracuse is an infinitely larger nationally known name than NC State. Syracuse football however is not currently a bigger name than NC State, they are both nothings nationally.

Syracuse is a bigger name nationally in football too. Because of the name in total, some people outside of the northeast knows a bit about them. Outside of the Atlantic coast nobody knows NCSt for anything.

Sure wish that recruits felt that way since their perception is all that matters, quick glance at espn's rankings show they had more 4* recruits last year alone then we have had since the turn of the decade. On the bright side, I'm still very happy that Julius Hodge chose there.

You just changed the subject. Now you're talking recruiting. Maybe they have better recruiters than us? Having a more recognizable beans doesn't automatically get you players. A dozen things go into where a kid goes. To your point, I see NCSt 6 spots higher in recruiting in one place and SU 5 spots higher in the other. And btw, the few 4 stars NCSt are all from NC.

The question was, "Will Syracuse Ever Catch a Break"
The answer is No.

No it's not because I didn't say that Syracuse University is a "top five" football brand.

I said it still has a strong football brand.

Read the post.

And by the way, UCLA is still a strong college basketball brand.

Also, where do you live?
The brand is they su c k, its cold, and no one goes to the games. That is the brand.

I don't have the patience to go through the thread and find all the quotes, but people have been saying that when people see them in Cuse gear they think basketball. And that some how means that our football program isn't well known.

I'd argue that NC State isn't a step up in perception for either sport and that their record under Doreen isn't much better than Shafer. You can argue all you want - but NC State is no power in either sport.

And he went from OC here to WR coach there. Snow aside, that's a downgrade.

He hadn't been SU's offensive coordinator since Septemebr

Spin it how you like. Last year at this time he was OC at Syracuse and now he's the WR coach at NC State. If the demotion was unjustified, he'd be an OC at a peer school.

getting breaks is about luck. We need to make our own luck. I'll be interested to see the commitment going forward now.

When you end the season as the WR coach and take another job as a WR coach...it's not a step down :bang:

He was also associate head coach.

It's a big step down.

Living the dream! He probably always wanted to be WR coach at NC State instead of OC/Associate HC at Syracuse.

NC State is a public school, so they may very well have to disclose the salaries of everyone on staff. Let's see how much they are going to pay him, compared to what we (likely) did.

I'm not even sure that will even matter unless it's a huge bump. It's about career trajectory. He saw Syracuse OC/AsHC as a way up compared to more money (probably) as WR coach at Arkansas. It may or may not be a lateral move - but it sure isn't a step closer to being a HC somewhere.

I'm more in interested in the pure, raw numbers. I could look it up right now, but am feeling lazy. What does NCSt pay their WR coach? I'll do some digging at lunchtime.

You paint with a broad brush. One thing we have heard in quotes from recruits is how the Syracuse history...whether it be Ernie Davis, Jim Brown, The movie The Express, Donovan McNabb etc. have influenced. They said so. How much? I have no idea but you can't just generalize because you were once recruited to play baseball somewhere. Baseball is a totally different animal because MLB players are not as affiliated with colleges as e.g. NFL players. In many cases, baseball players didn't go to college at all and if they did, few know or care about it. When you talk football, it's a big deal.

Most people don't even pay attention to college baseball.

Except of course when you mention McNabb, Harrison, Freeney, Coughlin, Csonka, Johnston, Jim Brown and others.

For those who truly watch college football, Syracuse University is still a solid brand.

A stronger brand than NC State.
Not necessarily. I've spoken to a number of people here in Knoxville since I've lived here that don't remember any farther back than McNabb that any of those guys played for SU. I've heard a lot of, "Really? Jim Brown played for SU? Larry Csonka too?" I'm doing my best to educate people, but outside of CNY most don't know our football history.
