William Kyle Appreciation Thread

Lot's of almost offended feeling takes on here. The OP didn't seem to mean to insult Kyle. It's perfectly reasonable to wonder if taller centers could give him trouble. At the same time, he seems to have athleticism we've lacked for a long time. If he, and we, can play with a more physical and aggressive style, we have a chance to be much better than we have been, but right now we're all pretty much guessing.

My comment you replied to had nothing to do with his ability to play defense.

I'm done with this thread. It's amazing how people on the basketball board reply to comments completely out of the context.

I didn't say you did disagree. I said you sounded as if you thought I did. Do you have difficulty with reading comprehension?
Hush little baby don’t say a word, mommas gonna buy you a mockingbird

I see his handle and don't bother to read it anymore. I don't put anyone on ignore just skip the posts I don't need to read.

Discussing height only for a center is lazy scouting. You don’t play defense and block shots with your head. Some here would prefer a 7 footer with alligator arms over a 6’9 guy with a 7 foot plus wingspan.
I do think overall strength/size down low is necessary if we wanna be a top 2 or 3 ACC team and be relevant in the tourney. example is, specific to post defense, sophomore Maliq Brown got bullied by teams like UNC down low

He played a lot of center for Duke. Perimeter players own part of that too. We’ve been bad on defense at those positions for a long time. That said height is not weight or wingspan.

I am not worried about his height... I am worried he's only 230lb. It looks like he added extra weight this off season, but even 240lb is a little light for center in the ACC.

It's purely a numbers based concern for me. Even if he gained ten pounds this off season, I would be happier if he was 250 instead of 240.

But it doesn't look like he's small in his video.

Watching these highlights, Kyle doesn't look the least bit overmatched by his Big10 opponents. I like this video because it shows a lot of full possessions and not just the fun dunk at the end.

When was the last time we had a center who could do what Kyle displayed in this video? He will do just fine.

Maliq Brown was just fine for us at center most games... But he was absolutely humiliated by Clemson because they pushed him wherever they wanted him and then laid it in right in his face over and over.

Most games, Kyle will be just fine. It's those occasional games where having a quintet of long 6'9" guys between 225 and 240 lbs as our big man Corp is going to leave us in a bind. Our defense generally isn't good if we are forced to double team in the post.

A player like Onuaku or Lampkin won't be pushed around by pretty much anybody. Kyle, Souare, White, Freeman and Betsey aren't in that physical class. Hopefully it doesn't hurt us in a big spot this year.

This is all true, but Maliq had to shoulder the entire burden himself. The issue wasn't so much that Maliq couldn't hang, it was that he had zero help. We had a 7-4, 7-2, and two 6-11s that played a total of 4 minutes in those games against Clemson. The next tallest players were 6'7 180lb Chris Bell and 6'6 205 Justin Taylor! I view our current roster as having the ability to switch on D, and do a little more "big man by committee."

Remember we have a 6’11” guy from GaTech, a 7’0” Freshman and 2, 6’10” forwards who can help.

The Taylor and Bell combo at the 3 and 4 was a defensive juggernaut for us.

I think you're all missing the big picture here, which is that this thread gave me the opportunity to bestow Short King as his nickname, and that is literal message board gold.

Very good points. I am much more enthused by this roster and this group of big men than in previous years. Even last year, after Lampkin and Freeman, we had nothing. This year we have Souare, White and Betsey off the bench. An ACC starter from last year, a top25 and a top50 recruit coming off the bench.

The talent and depth differential from the last two years to this upcoming season is huge.

It's kind of why you have to chuckle at a thread titled "Kyle is Too Short."

If the 44in vertical is accurate, he actually out jumps Warrick.

Prior to the 2003 season, I remember reading McNeil actually had the higher jump and reach. I think it aways looked like Warrick got higher because of how long limbed and thin he was. He also got to display more on offense with his post game.

Imagine McNeil's athleticism with Otis Hill's skillset. He would've been an all-american
For an undersized post player, the second jump vertical is maybe more important than just a single vertical. If it takes a long time to reload and get back up in the air, the shorter guy is going to lose a lot of battles.

Bacot had 16 points in 17 minutes that season in a 40 point win. filipwoski and mitchell had a dunkathon on maliqs face all game long...No, maliq wasnt "fine" as a Center.

why do you guys have to do this???

you like Maliq so you wanna portray him well. ok. i get it.

yeah, I liked him too...but he wasnt good as a center. dolezaj wasnt a good center. chukwu wasnt a good center. etc etc

yeah, actually it was. hes not a center ...hes not a good center. good player but he couldnt come close to covering the post when he played for the Orange. lynn kidd from Va tech was like 8 of 9 shooting vs brown. he couldnt stop anyone good.

i hope you guys are right about kyle.
