WJPZ / Axe Podcast

So I was never and am still not an avid radio show consumer. Was always kind of agnostic over someone like Axe. Sometimes he would be worth a listen while others annoying. This certainly all makes sense. That said generally curious regarding how many other schools out there actually have local radio shows that aren't Homer or program friendly the majority of the time.

IMO, if Jim pulled some of the things he did in other markets the last couple of years, he would have been destroyed. Thought the general coverage I saw from clips of local Syracuse media was fair...and probably leaned soft. But with you in that I didnt listen to Axe's show because he was painfully unfunny.

Cliff notes?

Nothing earth-shattering and a very sober assessment of the likely situation. First half of the show is actually Axe's past and getting into radio. Second half is about the Galaxy Media firing.

Basically an extrapolation of the clip in the tweet.
>> No ranting and raving. Just said that he thought JB leaned in to get him fired, but can't prove it.
>> Also touches on how the owner of Galaxy Media never addressed with him the idea of the station being more unabashedly pro-Cuse and Axe said he never hid that he was there to be a guy that spoke to what he was seeing (while being fair).
>> He said that his relationship with JB had gone sour
>> He said he has a better relationship with Dino, but that it's hard because he wasn't attending all the games due to work items

Again, he didn't go nuclear. He was fair, imo. Whatever happened, happened.

It’s a good interview. I respect Brent, not a huge fan of his show content, but I think he approached it the right way. He really understands the journalistic responsibilities. I thought of him as more of an entertainer than a journalist - and ultimately I think this is the rub.

I think Ed Levine saw him as a sports DJ. Brent saw himself as a journalist. It’s not like Ed Levine hired Donna or Mike Waters. I don’t think Axe was ever a beat writer.

Those are two different mindsets that over time are going to conflict.

I worked for WSYR when they had the SU rights. EVERYONE knew that the better the sports teams did, the more ads you sold and bowl games and NCAA tournament games were like gold. That contract was a huge deal and we all benefitted.

And I was there when the probation investigation occurred and our GM came into the newsroom and told us all “do your job, do not worry about how it affects the contract”.

It can be a difficult line to toe some places.

I am very sympathetic to journalists who get fired for taking unpopular stands.

Was not a regular listener of Brent but I heard many of his shows many times for many years.

To me, he was not a journalist in the Cronkite above it all objective sense.

He was (and is) a journalist in the tabloid journalist sense.

When you live by the sword, you die by it too.

Brent is a good guy. Glad he is doing well and has weathered the storm.

Wish him the best in the future.

Fortunate to have a GM like that.
At most places today the contracts and business would be the first thing they think of.
They may not say it outright but the staff would get the message.
