Emily Leiker leaving

From todays email newsletter.

Very nice letter.

Also, I'd like to point out, whoever has this role has to be able to podcast, be active on social media and write. And probably get paid peanuts and had to deliver subs. And prob deal with a bunch of keyboard warriors, including a lot of old men.

I liked Emily. She put out a ton of content. She was pretty good on podcasts and her understanding of pop culture is going to lend itself well down the road in her career.

She was hanging with Mirin Fader, who I think is arguably the best current sports writer (especially regarding basketball) in terms of storytelling (vs an analytical writer like Zach Lowe), at the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Mirin works for The Ringer. I can see that an eventuality for Emily being at a place like The Ringer where she can balance football writing, pop culture knowledge and a propensity for podcasting in one shot.

Again, she put out a TON of content. For someone her age and for the short duration, she did a fantastic job.

It's also nice to see how warmly the team greeted her. It's always good to see evidence of what you already believe that people like Donna, etc are good people.

Totally agree. I have to believe profit margin dictates the hire for her position. My guess is that it will be a revolving door with entry level writers passing through.
It’s tough when we have two outstanding long term basketball writers. Given the challenging finances in the journalism industry in the digital age they likely cannot afford a strong, experienced writer.

The PS has had a lot of good ones over the years. Sad that the CNY market can't support more experienced writers especially with Newhouse right here.

Tough to get people to pay for something they now think they are entitled to get for free. I’ve considered dropping my subscription but want to continue to support people like Mike and Donna.

I even pay my $3.99 a month to Axe even though most of his content is available elsewhere shortly after he releases to hi insiders.

How dare you post a mature, thoughtful and caring comment here!

Although seriously this was nice to read. I never think about how many times I see/hear Emily weigh in on cuse football and you’re right it’s a lot

Yeah, I get why it's frustrating for people when you used to have beat writers pumping out written content about the second-string DTs or whatever, but this role in the year of our lord 2024 is a lot different.

Not only is it a ton of written content, but it's writing for social media in bites, it's knowing pop culture = trends, it's podcasting and it's doing so in a way to garner subs.

Its a hard job. Not that it was ever easy. And you need to really have motivation to make yourself a brand so people are willing to follow you on social, download podcasts and subscribe to the publisher that pays your salary.

I'm not saying I don't miss the old school Bob Ryan beat writer that could write an article on a mid-season game seem like it was the most exciting thing ever, but the job is so so different now.

Also, remember that she is now dealing with coaches and especially players that are WAY different in terms of how they approach media and their public personas now. These are kids born around the mid 2000s. I don't envy anyone taking this job. This isn't grabbing a beer with the coaches and knocking out a column about how the Tampa 2 is beat in the local rag.
