They mention two race car drivers who had recently been killed. One was Mike Hawthorne:

The other is described as an Italian Driver who was killed "in that long road race". The contestants are unable to identify him but I think Julia Meade meant the Spaniard Alfonso de Portago, who died with his riding mechanic and several spectators in the Mille Miglia, a race that ran the length of Italy. The accident cause the race, which had a long history, to be ended, although it was alter reviewed as a "road rally", a competition at safer speeds.
