Worst Boeheim team ever?

To each their own, but why the hate towards Thues? He was a pretty decent point guard for us, solid distributor and a very good defender. To my knowledge, he wasn't responsible at all for any of the drama and turmoil that ruined that team that should have been a 5/6 seed in the tourney.

(Edit: I just noticed the "not on purpose" part, so I may have misunderstood your post)
He lead the Team in steals maybe the league? The only Bright spot on the team .

Pretty amazing that JB has never had a losing season in Big East regular season play. I recall those two seasons in my nightmares and could have sworn we went about .250 against league foes. I guess with our high expectation a .500 record in conference just seems like total failure in retrospect.

Love your question.

A couple of years ago when I had some spare time, I did an analyis of the data to find the best JB team ever. I looked at performance in 5 areas. 1) W/L Record. 2) Point Spread. 3) Best in Polls. 4) Best in Post Season. 5) A composite of the prior four.

I just went back and checked the composite results for the worst teams.

This is what the data shows. It is not based on opinion. #3 is hard to believe.
Those other teams had bad Records but for selfishness and non-existent Chemistry the 2001-02 23-13 team hands down, I have followed SU BBALL since 1963 and IMO the absolute most enwatchable ........

Didn't he fight Hopkins?

Hard to believe that 96-97 team did so poorly. 13 losses. Two future NBA'ers (Hart and Thomas), plus Ovcina, Burgan, Hill, Cipolla and Janulis. Go figure...

just throwing it out there, we beat miami 66-13 in 1998.

it was an amazing feat for a quarter century, but it ended when they went 7-9 in conference play during GMac's senior season . . . that year was one of JB's worst coaching seasons, IMO.

Has to be the Andre hawkins team, the year Hawkins and a couple of other guys were accusedf of raping a Villanovqa cheerleader after SU's early exit in the Big East Tournament in Hartford. Not a great team and a real black eye for the program in the early 80's.

i met the hawk at 2003 final 4. the coolest guy ive ever met.

Mike Hopkins was a Freshman at Mater-Dei Hawkins last year at SU

If he did, then I withdraw my comment. :)
I don't think it was a big deal, things just got heated at practice, if I'm remembering correctly.

Yep. I had erased that from my memory (what's left of it). I listened to most of those games on WGY out of Schenectady that year, or at least as much of those games as I could stand.

Wasn't 2001-'02 the year of Preston Schumpert's eye? He was unconscious from three until he had his corneal abrasion or whatever it was. After that he was nuttin' and as Preston's eye went so goes Syracuse.

Those might be the four worst. There is a common denominator--point guard play.

81-82 Rautins initiated the offense as a Point forward. He hurt his knee mid-season, and the team had great trouble adjusting to his absence. Then he came back at the end of the year, and the team had trouble re-adapting to his presence.

96-97 Freshman Hart given the keys to the team; not ready.

07-08 Freshman Flynn given the keys to the team; not emotionally (with help from his buddy Harris) ready.

01-02 Thues at PG. Not as bad as some have stated, but he couldn't overcome the soap opera that was Shumpert/Williams.

Nope. The scratched cornea happened the year before, vs. Pitt in the semis of the BET. That was Alan Griffin's team that got a bad draw against Kansas and their monster rebounders in the second round of the NCAA's.

Didn't we lose to Miami the next year by like the same score?

Probably pretty bad...

my point was in reference to the poster commenting on how the 97 cuse bball team had 2 future pros and he was surprised that they had 13 losses. Well those 2 future pro's were freshmen, and etan hardly played.

That miami team had the best recruiting class in the history of college football.

If we've done this already(I don't remember), ignore. I know we went like 16-13 or something like that once but I gotta go with that Shumpert-Deshaun-James Theus team.

Easy. Bernie and Laurie Fine. Worst team ever.

Nah. Apparently Laurie Fine had some of the best players ever and set many records.

Broke the record for most dunks in a career with all those rim jobs.
