You actually know this? As I’ve said before, Wildhack should already know his #1 and be doing everything to angle to land him. Yes, he’ll need a couple of backup candidates, but Hop won’t be that guy. And I love Hop. I wish JB had retired in 2017 and Hop had his chance to prove himself back then at his alma mater.
Syracuse loves being cheap and they love hiring internally. See Red, FLJ, and Lax

Who wants to start the Bernie Fine thread?
Bernie Fine somehow was a bit better at developing the big men. Have we really developed a C since Bernie? The PF/C on the 2011-2012 team were Fab Melo, Rakeem Christmas. The next year, was Christmas, DeJuan Coleman, and Baye Keita. Same trio the next year. But things start to fall of a cliff in terms of developing the PF/C after Fine left.

FLJ had been very successful at Buffalo before Syracuse hired her, she was more than qualified for the position. Especially where the programs reputation was at during the time she got hired, we were very fortunate to have had someone motivated to turn it around with the qualifications she had. So if you’re going to make that point, leave her out of it.

I would have taken him 10 years ago. Not now.

Can Fran coach both sports? He could be in charge of recruiting and we could hire an offensve guru as one assistant and a defensive one as the other. Call them all associate head coaches and pay them the same. Fran could cut us a break on the salary like when you bundle multiple types of insurances with the same insurance company.

FLJ is great but I imagine she is taking some kind of discount compared to her true worth in the open market. It seems our coach salaries have always been right among the middle to lower middle of the conference.

Unfortunately, for hop, he has been in the NBA for the last few years. It probably would have helped his chances to rehab his image at a mid major and show he can run a college program and win at his conference level. Since it seems like the school is going to take a flyer with a non-brand name coach, I don’t think we have the data to support that hop is capable of becoming, and is on his way to becoming a top 25 coach.

He was an unbelievable big man coach

I'm not sure Wildhack will be hiring anyone. The last I heard, he plans to retire and leave the decision of selecting Red's replacement to the new AD.

Might as well keep Red if we are going the Hop route. I can't imagine the results being any different.

They wouldn't be. At UW, once the players he inherited from Romar moved on, he fielded lousy teams, in a watered down Pac12. He proved to be a no-trick pony on defense [eventually resorted to nearly 100% zone, because that's what he knew] and his offenses were hot garbage. Like what Red's are here.

That's because the nut doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Hopkins is a great guy, an engaging personality, and a perfect assistant coach. No way should he ever be legitimately considered for a head coaching opportunity here. This is a results driven profession, and results matter.

I’m by no means pushing for Hop to be the HC, and don’t want that, but to compare him to Red is outrageous. Hop may be overly in love with the zone, but he understands basketball and can have a logical basketball conversation/presser.
