Looking at them and what they have done this year, they seem legit. Played a good schedule @ the Vols and dismantled a solid UNC team. Preseason, this looked like one of those swing games and oh, how times have changed. Would now be a huge upset. I think we have a good showing sat. Interesting to see dino ball against a Bud Foster defense. He is one of the best in the game.

im thowing out the game last week vs unc as unc is a pass oriented offense and the game was played in a monsoon with strong winds.

Ok, makes sense, that was still impressive.

But we got blown out by a much less talented wake forest team and the weather didn't play a factor in the game at all

I wouldn't call it a blow out.

The weather didn't factor into the game at all???

Wake was up 14-9 midway fourth quarter and it was played in driving rain and wind in the first half.

Are you a Trump supporter?

Or more accurately, hello Hillary!

We didn't know you supported SU football.

Welcome to our board!

If you've followed any of my posts since saturday, you'd pick up on the extreme sarcasm of my post. The blowout, the talent, and the weather.

well the point was that the wake forest OL and DL pushed our guys all over the field. not sure how you arrived at the "less talented" conclusion.

Sarcasm. Because if your tombstone will read 'Here lies Serious', it's probably not for you.

We've been pointing to scores "going into the 4th", or "midway into the 4th" for a year and a half, yet the score that counts, when the game is actually over, is usually a loss in those instances. Speaks to our lack of depth I suppose. Enough talent to hang in there, but not deep enough to win.

Saturdays the day orange fans.
For another loss?

Good to be hopeful but let's not get our hopes too high. We tell ourselves Cuse will win and then get bent out of proportion when Cuse doesn't show strong

Their pass defense may be the best we face all year, they are going to come after the QB all day and we can't run. It's going to be another long afternoon.

Of course it is ...:vomit:

Note to prospective offensive minded coaches. Find a job with a long time successful defensive coordinator who is happy as can be to stay in that role.

Half the job is already covered.

Do we think their defense is better than Louisville? We were able to move the ball a bit on them.

Probably a push. But we were healthier against Louisville (OL in particular), and there was less film on our personnel and what we do.

AMEN, love bud foster. He makes plenty of coin as a DC. At a great school, can concentrate on one side of the ball and make millions. Shafer might have been able to become our BF at the Cuse in time. I love Dino, but sorry, i prefer to lose with an attacking defensive philosophy.

I would like to see the stats of how much less we are attacking on D vs last year.. I dont think its nearly what people are saying since we dont run nearly as much tampa 2 as people say we do. we blitzed a ton in that wake game. the bigger issue is not having the horses who are good at it.

I prefer to win. And I think Dino will do that more than Shafer did.

I agree, yes, love dino, but the T2 is unproven at this level. Have to have perfect, high level talent to run it.

I keep hearing you say that it's unproven at this level. It's been proven in HS, FCS, FBS, and the NFL. Our DC has coached at every level outside of the NFL and when he was an FCS coach he held teams in the P5 down (presumably a pretty large talent gap).

Bailey had a great breakdown of it today at Syracuse.com, here's a relevant bit (it's all good though):

"If the SU staff can achieve consistent play with suitable personnel, the hope is that this defense will be equipped to compete with the ACC's best. In Ward's fourth year at Western Illinois, the Leathernecks held then-No. 18 Wisconsin scoreless until the Badgers' final drive of the second quarter. Another FBS foe, Northwestern, managed only 24 points.

And the most prominent example of this system thriving against better collegiate competition comes from North Dakota State, where Ward reunited with former Missouri Southern State coaches Scottie Hazelton and Todd Wash in 2010. Ward replaced Wash at MSSU in 2005 and continued running the Tampa 2 with Hazelton for one season.

North Dakota State upset then-No. 13 Iowa 23-21 earlier this year, its sixth consecutive road win over an FBS school. The Bison have also won five consecutive FCS championships, including 20 straight playoff victories.

It's that NDSU defense that caught Babers eye while at Eastern Illinois from 2012-13 and led him to hire Ward.

"I was really enamored with breaking them down so if we ever got to them, we'd have a great opportunity to win," Babers said. "And they base everything off their Tampa-2 defense. So when I made a change on defense (at Bowling Green), I wanted to go with what had been successful before."

---

I'm beginning to think some here have given up on this defense too soon.
