WR/DB Dom Foster transferring to JUCO Independence CC

If you are being pushed out, the way Deion Sanders did at Colorado, you are not giving up your scholarship. You are being coerced into leaving.
That’s separate from the portal and existed before the portal.

Yup

Prime also told them when he was hired that most of them would not be part of his plans and that he was going to bring his guys in

I think this is the list of outgoing transfers:

WR: Courtney Jackson, Anthony Queeley, Dom Foster
OL: Tyler Magnuson
DL: Josh Hough

In my original response, I focused on the 'largely deadwood' part of the post and I basically disregarded the rest - 'kids who have been injured and haven’t had time to recover, or just to upgrade.'.
The list above includes at least one guy who was probably told to look elsewhere, some injured guys, and some guys looking for greener grass elsewhere because it probably wasn't going to happen here.

So, yes, I think you can argue that SU basically culled a chunk of the roster this year.

You can say that some of these guys went willingly for better offers somewhere else and they were not necessarily encouraged by the staff to look elsewhere but regardless, there was turnover that was facilitated by the availability of the transfer portal.

I think it's probably easier for powerhouse programs to deal with the transfer portal because, however many guys want out, they are twice as many who want in.
For a middle of the pack team like Syracuse, a team that has been dealing with depth issues for what feels like 15 years, the transfer portal seems to be more of a headache than an advantage.

And if Freshman Tyler Magnuson is a guy who 'received the talk' and was encouraged to go somewhere else, then I'm worried about the staff's ability to identify talent. I'm hoping that he just wanted to go closer to home. If he's transferring because he's not a good fit, that's really bad.
So when Syracuse has the talk they are poor at identifying talent, but when Ohio State does they are simply telling a player they have minimal chance of playing here? Or actually being shown the door. I honestly believe the Portal will end up helping us, simply because there will be players available that can play at a high P5 level but get buried on the depth chart for whatever reason and they see the benefit for playing for a coach like babers and program like SU. I mean someone has to see the benefit of Integrity and goodness. My gosh the bright lights of the Elite money schools can be blinding. Good culture and education is tangible. We know that. We must be innovative in NIL initiatives and continue to build culture. Hopefully less people who can truly play will leave because of this and high level players will want to come here via portal or HS route when they realize what we have to offer. I encourage people to watch Nick Monroe being interviewed at the Pinstripe bowl, says alot about the culture of the program and that is why I support them. And by the way Syracuse is potentially going to have a higher percentage of players who are going to have difficulty competing secondary to current status, that is what we are working on changing. We also have to remember that in an appropriate, fair and good way when we discuss future playing time with our student athletes. We are the ones who recruited them in the first place. I fully support coach, Go Syracuse.

It’s still a choice to leave. If these kids are attached to the school and don’t care if they play in the game then they can stay and just ride the bench. Sanders is being straight up that those kids are not P5 talent and likely won’t start or play at Colorado with your major improvement. It’s honesty, not coercion.
