Is Dom Timbers still in play?
Is Dom Timbers still in play?
I bet most of the time, coaches are not happy about the transfer portal.Does the Transfer Portal make it easier for coaches to “cut players loose?” Perhaps kids who haven’t quite developed yet, or might need a second chance for some reason? Is this another example of a rule that’s supposed to be good for the kids but just ends up being good for the coaches?
It appears to me that top schools can now cull 10-15% of their roster, largely deadwood, kids who have been injured and haven’t had time to recover, or just to upgrade.I bet most of the time, coaches are not happy about the transfer portal.
It works in favor of coaches now and then, but usually, it creates roster chaos and puts a lot more pressure on the staff.
yeah, that's true.It appears to me that top schools can now cull 10-15% of their roster, largely deadwood, kids who have been injured and haven’t had time to recover, or just to upgrade.
That is exactly what SU did this yearyeah, that's true.
I don't know if that can be done by the teams who are in the middle of the pack.
I hear Dom DiMaggio is taking an official in late JanuaryDom DeLuise is out.
Who besides Dom Foster did SU cut loose? That exactly what SU did this year
Dom Perignon?Dom DeLuise is out.
everyone that isn’t chestnut and CarterWho besides Dom Foster did SU cut loose?
I'm not being argumentative. My memory really is terrible.
Not trying to be argumentative either. Just trying to think this through…yeah, that's true.
I don't know if that can be done by the teams who are in the middle of the pack.
I remember that year, we were doing head counts on the Skowt board of players as they made it to campus… I had no contacts at that time, no insiders, nothing…Is Dom Timbers still in play?
If coaches are transparent with the players on where they stand and the kid is not ok with it then the portal works as intended. The moment transparency disappears and one side is not communicating honestly then the portal doesn’t work. Not trying to be argumentative either. Just trying to think this through…
Let’s say SU is middle of the pack. We grab a half dozen Portal kids. Those kids take up spots that HS kids would have taken in the past.
Has the Portal led to few scholarships offered to HS kids - especially those reaches or projects who had to develop, undersized athletes, or kids who simply needed a chance to prove themselves? Are more kids getting “dropped” through the portal because teams won’t invest 3-4 years on a kid anymore,
These are honest questions. The truth of how they are answered gives insight into how “good” the portal is for “the kids,” or how much it simply favors the top 10% of the players, and all of the coaches.
I think this is the list of outgoing transfers:
WR: Courtney Jackson, Anthony Queeley, Dom Foster
OL: Tyler Magnuson
DL: Josh Hough
In my original response, I focused on the 'largely deadwood' part of the post and I basically disregarded the rest - 'kids who have been injured and haven’t had time to recover, or just to upgrade.'.
The list above includes at least one guy who was probably told to look elsewhere, some injured guys, and some guys looking for greener grass elsewhere because it probably wasn't going to happen here.
So, yes, I think you can argue that SU basically culled a chunk of the roster this year.
You can say that some of these guys went willingly for better offers somewhere else and they were not necessarily encouraged by the staff to look elsewhere but regardless, there was turnover that was facilitated by the availability of the transfer portal.
I think it's probably easier for powerhouse programs to deal with the transfer portal because, however many guys want out, they are twice as many who want in.
For a middle of the pack team like Syracuse, a team that has been dealing with depth issues for what feels like 15 years, the transfer portal seems to be more of a headache than an advantage.
And if Freshman Tyler Magnuson is a guy who 'received the talk' and was encouraged to go somewhere else, then I'm more worried about the staff's ability to identify talent. I'm hoping that he just wanted to go closer to home. If he's transferring because he's not a good fit, that's really bad.
Agreed on most of this. I think the kids that are a reach or developmental prospect at the big programs but a solid contributor at the middle programs will begin to course correct on where they decide to sign. It’s not going to make a big difference as big time programs will continue to widen the gap.I expect the reality of the Portal is exactly what I expected it to be before it went into place.
Top programs will give kids the talk, and thin their roster annually, more aggressively than they did in the past. They will backfill with portal guys moving up from mid level programs who want a bigger stage, and more blue chip HS kids.
Mid level programs will get washouts from top programs, kids who got the talk, or more probably projects or injured players that the top programs aren’t going to wait around for. More mid level programs will give kids the talk than previously.
Lower level programs will have an impossible time holding on to diamonds in the rough. They will routinely jump through the portal to mid and top level programs.
More HS kids will be forced to go the lower level route than previously, and overall fewer HS kids will be given scholarships to D1 schools straight out of HS.
Of the thousands of kids who get into the portal, most won’t find a landing spot in D1. Fewer kids will get to stick with programs and try to grow and develop over 3-4 years. Fewer kids will actually earn college degrees.
I remember that year, we were doing head counts on the Skowt board of players as they made it to campus… I had no contacts at that time, no insiders, nothing…
I had a friend at the office who was a very casual fan. That day, we were at the “water cooler” chatting. He said I heard about this Timbers guy, I think he’s going to be a good one.
I raced back to my desk and the CuseNation forum to post that Dom was in fact on campus and accounted for. Obviously a pretty significant jump.
About 2 minutes later, 4 posters who actually knew what the hell was going on shot me down lol. I passed off unsubstantiated info as fact, probably just hoping more so than anything else and got slapped around for it. I’ll never forget that.
Thought he was gonna be the guy, damn it.
You really uncorked that one. Didn’t you?Dom Perignon?
He's been macerating about it all season. You really uncorked that one. Didn’t you?
I agree but transparency has to happen both ways. So when high school coaches and family act as intermediaries for other staffs attempting to "buy". That should be shared with the current coaches. If coaches are transparent with the players on where they stand and the kid is not ok with it then the portal works as intended. The moment transparency disappears and one side is not communicating honestly then the portal doesn’t work.
Be transparent and allow each side to make a business decision. Unfortunately, not everyone is as transparent as Deion Sanders.
Which is not what the portal is supposed to be. It's essentially releasing players from their scholarship without dismissing them from the team. Like everything the NCAA does, they had no foresight and arguably made things worse.I expect the reality of the Portal is exactly what I expected it to be before it went into place.

No, the players are giving up their scholarship and leaving the team.Which is not what the portal is supposed to be. It's essentially releasing players from their scholarship without dismissing them from the team. Like everything the NCAA does, they had no foresight and arguably made things worse.
If you are being pushed out, the way Deion Sanders did at Colorado, you are not giving up your scholarship. You are being coerced into leaving. No, the players are giving up their scholarship and leaving the team.
