Class of 2023 WR Johntay Cook (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (5/1/25)

I think with Fran coming from Camden, he has a lot of experience dealing with kids who get in trouble and make bad decisions. He has a good idea who can be saved or not. If we offer and sign him, it probably means Fran is confident he can turn this kid around.

This isn't some 4-8 SEC coach throwing hail marys by bringing in a bunch cancer former 4 & 5 stars to save his job.

If this kid gets here and doesn't buy into "DART", is Fran going to compromise or will he get rid? Because once you compromise your values things unravel.

My bet...dismissed in a heartbeat.

Most of this visit is likely about first-hand character evaluation and making it crystal clear how demanding Fran is about the culture.

I have to be honest that I don't have a great feeling here. But if there are additional off the field issues, I do expect Fran to handle them quickly and appropriately with little tolerance. Will be interesting to see if this leads anywhere.

I feel like Fran is that rare leader and mentor that sees a young man like this in need and welcomes the challenge for all of the right reasons.

I think it's as simple as you tell the guy that if he buys in to D.A.R.T., he will fulfill his INCREDIBLE promise. This program provides the structure, exposure, strength & fitness, coaching and every other resource to allow him to reach his goals. It teaches him the values that will ensure his success. Other programs don't care if you slip. They aren't there for you do or night when you need guidance. Fran Brown answers his phone and he will give you his number. I don't know if any of that is true, but that's what I'd tell him.

Fran is not a miracle worker. This kid has been at two schools so far that couldn't get him to fulfill his promise. I will give the kid a chance if he comes here. But my expectations he turns it around are less than someone like Betrand.

He's not a miracle worker, but if anyone can get the best out of a person, I think it's Fran. He is genuine. He will genuinely care about any young man in this program. If we bring him in, he may screw up, but I'd like to think that he would benefit from a short leash and a great support system. I am not intimately familiar with what we provide in those areas, but listening to Fran and the whole DART system and how amazing our coaching staff seems to be, I think we have a great staff to deal with young men that need structure and discipline to reach their potential...better than most staffs. That being said, Fran CANNOT compromise for anyone, because he can discredit the whole DART mentality really quickly.

There’s rumors that he didn’t take with the new Washington teammates because of some hazing from the most recent Wash/Tex games. That was supposedly the big catalyst for it not working out. Take it FWIW.

I trust Fran to screen this on the front end. If he thinks he’s a take, then I would cheer for him accordingly.

I think Fran actually would like to be able to turn this kids life around. Part of his mentoring philosophy, and also part of his being a Christian and trying to save kids before they are lost to the street.

Yeah, if it becomes a straight-up bidding war, we're not going to beat Arkansas.
If this becomes about money, we should probably not even entertain a bidding war. The focus should be which place will support him in getting his life together again.

I think you’re analysis is probably correct.

My question would be how much “NIL” are we willing to risk, taking a flier? In the past, you risk one out of a dozen scholarships allocated to the receiver position. Today you are risking a lot of money you could allocate toward a more “stable” player.

I really believe if any coach can straighten a kid out, it would be Fran. But I also believe as Al Gore said “a leopard doesn’t change his stripes”.
