Class of 2023 WR Johntay Cook (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (5/1/25)

Sorry, I've seen enough Ben Simmons videos to not take any stock in a curated workout video.

Get excited all you want.
Year 8 of Ben Simmons working on that 3pt shot! Bound to happen anytime now.

does 40 yd time mean you have a quick start? Being faster and starting quicker may mean you can beat some jams and not all though.

Pena was seldom jammed lining up in the slot. The whole argument is moot.
Also the video does not give any indication how good or bad he would be in that situation. This is silly for a lot of reasons. If the video was showing him struggling to get through contact at the line in a 1v1 that would be different. It is just a work out with cones!

Can't say i like those shorts in that awful shade of Orange. Looks plenty strong as he appears to have added some muscle but to me he look like he maybe got a tad thicker in the middle than he probably needs to be for a very young quick receiver. Thats a bit critical though. Just hope he is staying in good shape, or at least will be there very soon. If he is and stays on the straight and narrow he should do very well in a nicer shade of Orange.

Is there a reason you do not like this guy? Like was he bad at working through contact before he got to Cuse? Or you can tell he is bad at it just from watching a small video? Why all this attitude?
I didn't say he was bad at all.

I'm just confused with the response of this board to a typical offseason workout video. Shows us absolutely nothing.

Your 40 yard dash time has zero impact on your ability to get off a jam at the los.
Actually thats wrong cause with that explosiveness u get hand fighting quickness and jab step quickness so i completely disagree wnith that.

I does impact how often you get jammed though. The ones with the blazing speed tend to be given a cushion or played off so a good jab step or a whiff on the jam doesn't immediately get the ball throw deep over the top.

From what I've seen he's the most put together wr on the team
He's got incredible talent. This is probably his last chance to put it together for a power four team and stay on track off the field so hopefully he leverages it. Fran isn't leaving much to chance with this kid from what I've been told. Lot of eyes on him.

You obviously never saw Scott Schwedes if you think Cook is thick in the middle. (That guy had insane Jets for a guy who had the OG “dad bod” for a receiver).

Very rarely do slot receivers get jammed. Most dbs play off the receiver with inside shade to take away the slant. It’s hard to jam a quick receiver on a slant route.
And that is why if Johntay Cook is out there playing it’s more then just yardage, it changes what you can and can’t do in the offense. The added challenge for defenses. If you play Cook soft in the middle of the field, he may just need to break one tackle to take it the distance. But if you play Cook tight. It opens the receivers on the outside which may easily create space with the attention to the middle of the field. QB hopefully reads the coverage on Cook well.

I would also like to see more jet sweeps like we used with Pena on the play to win the Miami game. Nixon does a great job, but I feel like that was under utilized last year and Cook could be a weapon there.
