Yesterday was the City of Syracuse's snowiest single day (24.2 inches) since February 15, 1946. And the second snowiest day since official weather records began in 1902.

No doubt there was a lot of snow, but in my mind it was not even in the top 5 storms we’ve had in CNY over the years. There were two worse in 2002-2003 a week apart, 93 obviously, another in 06 or 07 when SU cancelled classes for the second time ever and just this past February.

That said I fully acknowledge those storms may have had snow fall over the course of two days, but I rarely agree with the airport totals. They always seem lower/higher than I expect. It must be the specific location the airport is in or the person taking the measurement needs help.

Anyone know if Clemson's flight made it in? If so, did they decide to go right back to South Carolina when they saw the conditions?

1) By NCAA edict, teams must plan to arrive the day before a basketball game. 2) The Syracuse airport has never closed because of snow; flights get cancelled because of weather issues elsewhere, but our airport has never closed because of snow here. 3) Mike Waters says Clemson arrived yesterday.

You may be thinking of the year before when we won it in 1992.

Your recollectionis right but that happened over 2 days, plus it came when there was already a lot of snow on the ground. This was one day of snow falling on basically green grass so the total amount of snow out there is a lot less now than it was in 93.

Not to brag but I got a C+ in Meteorology my freshman year of college as a Gen Ed so I'm kind of an authority on this topic.

Never in my life did snowblowing 24 inches of snow feel like nothing. It was so light and fluffy! I allocated myself an extra hour that I didn't need.

The interesting part about yesterday’s snowfall from was the way I understand it was the fact the bands were originating from Lake Huron and not Lake Ontario. The Lake Ontario bands were increasing the strength and causing the snow to fall hard further east in the state.

For the storm of 1993, I brough my wife into the VA Hospital where she worked on Friday evening and she did not get home until Monday morning...Nobody else could get in to relieve the staff other than a few hearty soles who came in by snowmobiles. I was at home with a 3 1/2 year old and a 4 month old. Fun times!!

It wasn’t. I don’t mean to be surly. It was less than 24 hours. Although, I do see your point that if it lasted past midnight then technically it was 2 days.

Well, then, was the storm in 92? Cos we won the Big East and people were wondering how the team was going to get home.

Edit: I hate it when as the years go by my memories get all switched around. It’s like the song from the King and I: There are times I almost think I am not sure of what I absolutely know-oh. Very often find confusion in conclusion I concluded long ago-oh. In my head are many facts that, as a student, I have studied to procure-er. In my head are many facts of which I was more certain I was sure!!

I live in Solvay. The crazy part was, I went to bed at around 130am and we only had 2" . Woke up at 8am and we had 24". So during the night we had 3.6 inches per hour... thats crazy for non Tug hill Lake effect.

In Oswego County I remember the blizzard of '93 being much ado about nothing. The previous year we had a storm that dropped quite a bit more, 60 inches or so, but it wasn't as big of a deal with the news outlets because it was more localized. The way '93 was hyped, I expected more.

There was another big one I think in 2003 or '04. I worked 3rd shift at NPG in East Syracuse at the time. When I left work at 7 am there wasn't a flake falling. My house was about 25 miles away in Palermo. I got about 10 miles from my house and it was like a curtain dropped. I went from doing about 65 mph on a wet road to around 15-20 mph on a road where at times brushing against the snowbank is all that kept me from going off it. When I got to my driveway the bank was even with the bottom of my side window on my dakota and none of my neighbors had their driveways opened up yet. I pointed my truck at the driveway, floored it, and half jumped/half plowed through the bank. Momentum carried my truck about another 50 ft before it settled down and stopped. I went to bed and when I woke up that afternoon spent about 2-3 hours snowblowing with a 60in wide snowblower on the back of our tractor. I think we got about 5 ft that day too, and a little more the next day.

Was it 2006 when Oswego County got another big one? Not quite as much in one day, but I think a number of the schools were closed for almost a week (I know Mexico was) because they got about 10ft spread throughout the week. I missed the brunt of that one because I lived in Liverpool at the time.

Agree 10000%. Snow totals decided by midnight to midnight timeframes are just data points.

Blizzard of ‘93 was this storm on back to back days.

The airport totals are always off. They need a weather station downtown.

That tag-teaming is a requirement for heavy snow in Syracuse. Oswego doesn’t need the extra help from Huron due to the fetch from Ontario at their location.

I was in Syracuse for the '93 blizzard. My fraternity hosted a district convention that fell on the last weekend of spring break. We all got snowed in when the Governor shut down the NYS Thruway.

Best part was we convinced Chuck's to open and hauled a couple hundred people there to drink away the storm. I remember doing a funnel out of a trombone, but not much beyond that.

I went far enough north. It just wasn't that big of a deal for those of us that deal with the stuff that normally stays local and and doesn't go south of Oswego county. Quite often route 49 is a good cut off point. North of that gets hammered while a few miles south sees a lot less.
