Because eventually every team ends up like the Celtics and has dozens of numbers they can’t use. It’s silly.That's BS! SU needs to change the meaning of hanging a jersey in the rafter! Essentially they say none of those numbers are "retired" and can be reissued. Retire the number, hang it in the rafter and that number is off limits. Why doesn't that make more sense than what we are currently doing? The retirement of a Jersey would then be reserved for some really special players!!!
I like hanging a players name and number as a way to honor them. And then you also still use the number as a way to preserve the tradition and legacy.
The whole history of 44 is (a) from football, and (b) due to SEVERAL players wearing it. If we retired it when Brown left there’d literally be no legend of 44. It’d just be a number one guy wore.
