When things go bad you often hear various posters talk about how we are a middle tier ACC program, some might even say .500 program in conference. Well those posters would be wrong. Since joining the ACC in 2014 we have the 4th best regular season record. We also have the 3rd best NCAA tournament record at 8-3 and one of only three programs to make the Final Four (Duke, UNC and Cuse). So, we would all like us to be closer to UVA, Duke and UNC and do even better in the NCAA's but not really that bad (especially considering the impact of coming through sanctions). By the way, UVA is amazing regular season.

wow, I would not have guessed that, thanks for the data

In that time Duke, UVA, UNC a cut above, lets call them Tier 1. Big dropoff between UNC and SU. The other over .500 teams I'll call Tier 2 which are SU, ND, Miami, FSU, L'ville. Agreed not terrible.

Not bad for a somewhat tumultuous and arguably down period for SU basketball. The NCAAT performance in that time frame would be considered a golden age for all but the most elite programs.

Your data actually shows that we have in fact been a middle tier ACC program.

Especially when you start with 2015, where “various posters” start.

George W's approval rating was 85% after the 911 attacks...he ended his tenure at 49% approval.

Syracuse started its inaugural season at .824 (14-4). Since, it's 39-37 or .513. If we end up going 10-8 this year, that'll place us at 46-44 or .511.

That's the interesting thing about data, one can choose what to look at depending upon one's argument. :)

But two losses away from 8th. Either way, it's UVa, Duke, NC, and everyone else. We've been just another "everyone else", during the regular season.

yes but the best of everyone else and better than almost anyone in the NCAA's

A bar chart of the same data would be better at showing SU in comparison to others.

We are tightly clustered with ND and Miami outside of the Top 3 all virtually tied for fourth place.

Discarding Tear 1 in the ACC would show a different view, but then you have the impact of sanctions as a counterbalance to that.

Ovearall we have done pretty well. And the future with all our scholarship looks brighter.

Can we join UVA, UNC and Duke at the top? Maybe.

It would be a lot of fun if we could.

How come there are no NCAA records for the teams below Cuse?

that is not a technicality

Yeah, that first year in the ACC totally shouldn't count towards our record in the ACC.

And with our 'struggling' (by our historical standards) league record after that, you'd almost think our program was crippled by NCAA sanctions or something during those years?

Nah.

I think we'll have a better picture in a few years when the sample size is big enough to go Olympic Figure Skating style (taking out the top and bottom score) - yes, I just invented that term.

That was skewed by one really god season. Looking at average place in the standings:

1. UVA 2.2 avg high 1st low 6th
2. UNC 3.4 avg high 1st low 6th
3. Duke 3.6 avg high 2nd low 6th
4. Louisville 5.25 avg high 4th low 9th (1 less season in ACC)
5. Miami 6.0 avg high 3rd low 10th
6. ND 6.8 avg high 3rd low 13th
7. Clemson 7.8 avg high 4th low 12th
8. Cuse 8.0 avg high 2nd low 11th
9. FSU 8.2 avg high 2nd low 12th
10. NC State 9.0 avg high 5th low 13th
11. VA Tech 10.2 avg high 7th low 15th
12. Pitt 10.8 avg high 5th low 15th
13. Wake 12.2 avg high 10th low 14th
14. GA Tech 12.2 avg high 11th low 14th
15. BC 13.8 avg high 12th low 15th

Duke hasn’t been the 1 seed in the ACCT since 2010!

Impressive research! Just as I posted earlier, one can choose to use specific data that meets one's particular attempted argument being made. :)
