Nwora

Even Kentucky misses out on targets. You can sit here all day until you're blue in the face rattling off misses. Other schools recruited Nwora too. Like the "experts" here, I can draw up a list too and say who the staff needs to go after.

Let me ask you this simple question.

Are you pleased with the level of talent you have seen on our team compared to the top teams we face in the ACC?

I am not.

Syracuse isn't Duke or North Carolina. They will not get those types of players. Virginia doesn't get those types. Like Syracuse, they get 3 and 4 star guys. Unlike Syracuse, there's noticeable player development. The latter is a drum I've beat for some time now.

Take a look at the list of players we have gotten over the last 15 years.

Agreed -- we don't consistently get Top 5-10 kids. I get it. But we did, at one point, consistently get Top 25-50 kids, at least one or two per year.

Our level of recruiting has definitely dipped. You can see it when we play Florida State for crying out loud. You think we should be consistently outrecruited by them?

Did we have a scholarship available for him?

Remember, the staff was expecting and 'landed' Bazley at forward. I know they're a year apart but that's close enough for Bazley to have been a consideration.

The kid didn't come out of nowhere, he was recruited by Louisville and was from Buffalo. The "experts" on our coaching staff are the ones you should be posting fun at.

You guys are insane. It’s not like this kid is Zion.

Fresh year averages. Oshae 15 points, 9 rebounds and three tournament wins
Jordan 5 points, 2 rebounds and zero tournament wins

Soph year Jordan is better 17 points and 7 rebounds vs 13 points and 8 rebounds for oshae.

We’ll get a third year out of brisset and they won’t out of their guy. I’ll take Oshae

Cuse

Picking Oshae over Nwora was a legitimately fine/good decision by the staff. If that's what it came down to, anybody faulting them for picking Oshae is being a tool bag.

If we had a schollie available that wasn't being saved for Bazley, then the staff deserves a little heat for not touching base at least... Unless there were red flags keeping them away.

Also, **** this non-Orange fan, Nwora. Come get some, young man. Oshae better take that comment to heart.

Oshae isn’t anywhere close to as good as Nwora. Nwora averages 17/8 on 46/38/75.

Brissett averages 13 and 8 on 39/26/69.

It’s a no brainer who’s better and Nwora is Louisville’s best player. Brissett is the 3rd or 4th best player on his team.

I still think, mostly hope, Oshae will come back as a much improved player aka more efficient. He is still young and got thrown to the wolves as a freshman. That said, you cannot objectively look at each player's game and say Oshae is a better player. It's incorrect. Regardless of how each is playing this year, I also have no problem if it came down to Oshae vs Nwora. Never have a clue how these things play out because nobody can predict the future accurately every time.

Not being snarky, just posting a legitimate counterfactual:

Do we think Nwora would put up the same numbers if he'd been recruited to play for The Team That Doesn't Run An Offense? Would he even shoot as well as Brissett?

This sort of recruiting miss stings, but I think the program's problems run deeper than missing on a kid.

Free throw shooting has nothing to do with your offense. Either does layups.

Oshae gets a lot of open 3's and he's fired up a lot of bricks. Nwora makes shots when people are all over him.

Oshae has better athleticism, but that only gets you so far.

Check the shooting percentages though.

But saying “he’d be our best forward” doesn’t mean “we shouldn’t have recruited Brissett.” Would’ve been cool to have both.

It’s just kinda weird that a top 75 recruit from Buffalo that loved us wasn’t on our radar? I think some have said that we lock in on certain players and don’t cast a real wide net in recruiting? Not sure if that’s accurate, but I’m curious how different our strategy is from peer schools like...well, Louisville for one.

It’s frustrating as a fan when it comes out that great college b-ball players grew up wanting to play for Syracuse, and we weren’t interested. Just happened with Brunson.

All this hand wringing and nobody knows why any of those contacts weren't made.
There is more to recruiting a player than how well he plays ball.

Yeah, I think you and OttoMets sort of nail it.

First, who knows what Nwora does on this squad or how he develops.

Second, Brissett was a fine recruit...I can still easily envision a scenario where he puts up big numbers next year. I can envision one where he doesn't as well.

Most people probably thought he would have learned to attempt a shot at the rim without feeling the need to contort himself into a pretzel and blindly throw the ball at the hoop by now...somehow that hasn't happened. Why? Who knows.

Third, not sure what the whole scenario was, but if we didn't really bother recruiting Nwora, maintaining close contact, well, then we REALLY don't cast a wide-net, and we're idiots. Unless there some giant red-flags we don't know about...we do seem to really lock-in on kids to our detriment (but just my perception, I don't follow recruiting as closely as some other people).

Brissett has been wide open all year and hasn’t made anything from 3. Hard to blame that on the offense. He also shoots rockets off the backboard.

I'm not arguing the merits of his play this year. My point is, if you sat down and watched them in HS, I'm not sure you would be so awestruck by Nwora that you would just turn the lights off on OB's recruitment.

I don't really care how OB shoots now - in this thread at least. I don't think you're sitting around two years ago saying, "this Nwora is definitely going 17/8 on 46/38/75 his Soph year at Cuse with this squad! Call Brissett and his family, we're done recruiting this guy!"

It's funny how if SU goes after a local kid (read upstate NY or even north east) its "they have too broaden their recruiting area. And if they don't its "why can't they get the local kids", Just how many kids can they seriously recruit at one time and still coach the team.
