2018 Fall Ball Thread...

Lots to digest regarding the scrimmage this past weekend. Thanks to those who went and reported back. Good to see a lot of goals being scored, I have more concern for the offense this year than I do the defense (at least, I think the pieces are there for the defense, it really comes down to coaching and communication). No one player scoring a lot but good depth of scoring. Lots of names but I wonder when Desko starts trimming the guys who will actually see playing time this year. With the scrimmage rules being changed, he can play freshmen now and redshirt them later.

Probably silly to try and analyse a highlight video that only runs for 40 seconds, but Magnan (if he is indeed number 8) scored two nice looking goals, one in which he beats Brett Kennedy.

My guess this year is that there is a rotation of Voigt/Rehfuss/Solomon/Cook with Seebold being the wild card. I think Cook plays pretty much the same amount of game time as Voigt. We'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion that all these rotations are actually hindering development, and that they should just try and stick to a hard and fast top six offense and see how that gels.
P22 - I liked the constant rotation last year and do even more this year. The shot clock seems to require depth at both ends. Doesn't mean I would turn down standout ssdms and o middies.

Personally I think the strength and conditioning of the program has been down since Hal Luther left the program after the '09 Championship season. Hopefully the new guy they have hired can make a difference.

It's hard to tell. How long was Luther there? Just 08 and 09? Because 07 was bad. I haven't seen the guys up close. There are different trends in S&C, but most guys are very good. The players need to push themselves to get the benefit of it. IL has an article about Yale being bigger, faster and stronger than last season. I'm curious how teams do in the 4th quarter when players may be getting tired. Or hopefully SU isn't getting tired but their opponent is. Also, reducing injuries is part of this.

A lot goes into it and it's hard to quantify everything.

Some of you might also go to Laxpower lifeboat site, fanlax. It started for fantasy lacrosse and since Laxpower closed its doors, it is trying to pick up the slack. Anyways, in the first round of the fantasy draft (#13 overall), I picked Griffin Cook.

Nice to read some of the other posters praise for Cook. Good luck this year, looks like if Syracuse does well, you'll do well too!

Thanks! I need Solomon to play well this season. Hopefully I don't need Cook to get points this season. I got Solomon in the 4th round in 2016 and Seebold in the 4th round last year.

Hypothesize a bit more after UPenn scrimmage but sensing Cook may be the only 18 that will play significant minutes in 19. Decent 18' class but there are some talented 17's in wait such as Quinn, Seebold and Buttermore who llikely will hit the field right behind starting groups. Another tough SOS somewhat limits experimentation though pace may allow greater deployment. Be interesting as usual to see what unfolds.

Jerry Staats may see some time on D/LSM but of course he is a transfer not an 18. We could also see a freshman middie at SSDM. Besides that I think you're right. Maybe Matt Mangan or one of the Kim twins show enough talent to break in to one of the middie lines.

I'm not holding my breath for a Kim twin to make a dent on offense, especially with the depth SU has returning on offense.

Buttermore is someone who seems to divide opinion a little here. Maybe it is just Sholokov who isn't big on him based on HS film, I believe. I thought Buttermore would be an SSDM because he was a good 3 sport athlete and his film didn't show a lot of elite offensive tools, but when he was in HS I predicted that he would eventually make an impact because he was a 3 sport athlete and had more upside than someone who spent more time in HS playing lacrosse.

Lipka and Carlin seem like locks for the 2nd midfield line. After that it's Quinn, Buttermore, Magnan, McKinney and O'Sullivan? Again, it's hard to see one of the Kim twins breaking into the top 6.

However, SU loses a couple options at SSDM with Hutchings and Ford leaving, so maybe that's more likely. What's the depth chart there after the fall scrimmages? Dearth, Oladunmoye, Schwasnick (or is he just face off wings still), Nick Martin (man down only last year), Partamian got time at the beginning of last season, Murphy and Helmer can also play long stick. I like when they have about 4 guys they can really trust at SSDM.

With the depth at LSM, I think it'd be nice to see Helmer and Murphy stay at short stick, since it seems that position is weaker, and I don't like the idea of a player switching between and short and long stick mid-game.

I see Magnan making an impact! No is talking about Berkman? RS this year? No doubt Cook will see time!

Remind me what numbers did the Gait twins play in in their first season before 19 & 22?

Will the new NCAA redshirt rules be in for Lacrosse this year?
