2018 Fall Ball Thread...

After going through all the pictures a couple things stood out.
  • Grant Murphy was playing with both a short and long stick.
  • Owen Seebold has a big knee brace on one leg

Sometimes teams are chosen by the coaches as a kind of draft. They take turns picking players.

Nice to see Quinn, Seebold and Mangan pick up points! Hill could be a sleeper and is highly skilled!

I still think the attack may finish the season a lot different than it starts! I can’t see Desko playing both Solomon and Cook! It could end up as Rehfuss, Seebold and Cook!
No, it won't end up that way. Solomon has started for two seasons. The coaches aren't going to bench him for two guys who've hardly played any college lacrosse. I have Seebold on my fantasy team, so I want him to play, but he's not going to replace Solomon this season.

Of course, I have Solomon on my fantasy team. But, c'mon man, you know this isn't happening.

Agree with that. But I hope there is serious consideration to go right away with Solomon, Cook and Rehfuss. I strongly think they will try to run with Voigt to see how it goes as a trio, but think that’s a mistake. Give the kid the green light and let’s shake it up. I also hear Jake Nelson is having a strong Fall.

Believe #40 was Hull and #53 Garlow.

As far as #22, Refhuss if anyone as he is the straw that stirs the drink. He might be on the verge of a breakout year.

Cook is an excellent frosh but he and unheralded Nelson are almost indistinguishable at this point so leery of heightened expectations so fast.

Bomberry was no dodger yet productive, appears that Voight has expanded his game some so perhaps he produces off others just as Lefty did. Refhuss and him may have great synergy or not. Find out soon enough.

As far as Solomon, attack likely employs a 4 or even 5 man rotation which might see him sitting out a few mins every now and then but Solly is a damn good player with heart and hustle even if the head blanks once in a blue moon.

Well at least it created a discussion!

Has to be Solomon, Cook, Rehfuss. Solomon is best when he is finishing. He has played out of position most of his career. I see him as a crease attackman, who can dodge if they put a shorty on him. He and Voigt essentially play the same position.

Curious to know what you’re basing this on?

No offense to that poster but Cook and Nelson are totally different skill wise. Ones a true frosh UnderArmor AA and Nelson is a 2 time transfer from Bingo and Mercer. No offense to Nelson but let's be real.

Cook is a beast on the ride, too. He showed it in the Binghamton scrimmages and Desko mentioned it in the Post-Standard article (or DO article, I forget which). That’s the kind of thing that coaches notice and reward. I wasn’t being hyperbolic when I previously wrote that he’s coming for someone’s job. The kid wants to play now.

And I agree that Rehfuss is ready to break out. He finally looks like he’s ready and willing to dodge against long poles. I didn’t get that impression from him the last couple years. I think he puts up at least 60 points this year. I’d go higher but Cuse has really spread out it’s scoring the last few seasons.

I'm going through the photos, and I don't think everyone is wearing the right numbers, or maybe there are players that aren't on the roster. There is a #53 taking face offs and I don't think it's Lawton.
In those pics:
40 = Owen Hull, frosh from Rye
53 = Seth Thornton, frosh FOGO from Scarsdale

watching the scrimmage my take away is their are no super stars on this team offense is going to have to come from ball movement and by committee defense needs a lot of work. just the 1v1 was tough to watch. no one on hands, not driving them up the ally. if you where in a shooting position and didn't score that would have been a problem since your hands where so free. players walked threw the D untouched, not due to a great move but stick chasing and not moving feet.
a lot of work needed before Feb.
leave the #22 alone there's no one to take it.

Nothing unreal about actually watching them play on the same field together and saying they were almost indistinguable. Both small, skilled players who looked good . They are obviously at different stages of their college career given one is in first months practice and the other is entering his third year. Cook obviously will develop further and be on the field this season in some capacity but talk of handing him #22 or anointing him a Rice seems premature until he actually performs as hoped.

Didn't many lament for years handing #22 to Evans, the #1 prospect in the nation? Good player who could never match the hyperbole bestowed upon. What is real is that almost every fan salivates over every top fifty prospect and their credentials only to go silent on many. I personally believe that Cook will be very good but willing to wait.

As far as Nelson, he owns a nice h.s. resume and his fall play has been a pleasant surprise to date understanding his college results elsewhere have been negligible.

Before SU: All-time leading scorer at Vestal High School 293 career points ... U.S. Lacrosse All-American ... Three-time First Team All-League in Section IV ... Underclass Under Armour All-Star Games Participate for the Upstate Team ... Scored 116 points as a senior in high school, while serving as a team captain ... Also played football and basketball in high school ... Was a member of National Honor Society.

I think Desko said they are giving the opportunity to the upperclassmen for now! Solomon should keep his place! Let’s see how it pans out! I like Voigt but don’t think he’s a starter, more of a man up specialist.

I agree about Voigt. With a shot clock I wonder if a guy like him who can't dodge is going to be less valuable, because he can't break his defender down when the clock is winding down. I think it depends on how the opposing team matches up.

Lots to digest regarding the scrimmage this past weekend. Thanks to those who went and reported back. Good to see a lot of goals being scored, I have more concern for the offense this year than I do the defense (at least, I think the pieces are there for the defense, it really comes down to coaching and communication). No one player scoring a lot but good depth of scoring. Lots of names but I wonder when Desko starts trimming the guys who will actually see playing time this year. With the scrimmage rules being changed, he can play freshmen now and redshirt them later.

Probably silly to try and analyse a highlight video that only runs for 40 seconds, but Magnan (if he is indeed number 8) scored two nice looking goals, one in which he beats Brett Kennedy.

My guess this year is that there is a rotation of Voigt/Rehfuss/Solomon/Cook with Seebold being the wild card. I think Cook plays pretty much the same amount of game time as Voigt. We'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion that all these rotations are actually hindering development, and that they should just try and stick to a hard and fast top six offense and see how that gels.

Faster play in sports tends to open up more shots for pure shooters not the only way around. Not everyone on a court/ field needs to be a creator /breakdown player

Powell, Was there. Magnan scored once , nice highlight was repeated twice where he sheds stick check. Kennedy must have had close to 10gbs in scrimmage as he seemingly came out of every scrum with ball somehow. With him, Dearth , Fusco and hopefully Fernandez our wing play will help Varello who again will be our primary fogo. Schasnick was active, he is somewhat forgotten at ssdm but he's physical and hustles

Magnan also had two assists besides that goal. He's going to be good. Seebold wearing that knee brace was at first game troubling but he moved very well and should not be dismissed as a contender for playing time somewhere. Some frosh looked very good on but scrimmage was played very loosely by some returnees so may not be best gauge. ACL injury to Swigart seemed to deflate energy of some and it was called early. Ball moved really well but as another poster said, there were alot of free hands so UPenn scrimmage against opponents played with more intensity should provide truer read . Of frosh, Kims, Cook, Nelson and Kevin Hill looked good. Of returnees, Refhuss shined, Lipka and Buttermore stood out and I agree with another poster on OSullivan take. He can scamper and beat most defenders for his shot, question will be his D and passing ability . . Voight moved pretty well and has synergy with Refhuiss. Year ago, Quinn had same high standing as Cook and it was predicted by one that he would start at mid from day one. I think he is very good but would like to see him and Carlin involved more because both likely on second line.

That makes sense. The question may be whether SU's offensive positions look more like fast break lacrosse or settled offense squeezed into 80 second segments. I'm picturing the latter when I say that Voigt may be less valuable.

Very true, slower players more reliant on others and approach. Pace so far in scrimmages have been uptempo . Think new shot clock has been healthy and led to that despite my early reservations. We do have some fast kids that can push pace but that has to a be a team focus with all on same page to properly execute . I do think our attack has a nice mix and can offer more looks this year

Is anyone going to be brave enough to make the Cook = MP comparison!! Hahaha too soon?
