2019 Fall Ball ...

Thanks for all the insight - obviously not the result we were looking for, but hope the Orange can take some lessons away from the game. Kind of makes me wonder if playing two scrimmages in the fall is really worthwhile? I still think they overdo it with the scrimmages and wish they would play a 13th regular season game. Seems like whatever the coaches are doing to "shape" the season isn't really working ... maybe try something different? I don't think it would be a bad idea to schedule more midweek games during the regular season. If they want to be successful during the ACC tournament and Final Four weekend they have to learn how to play with little rest. I think the coaches are putting too much bubble wrap on this team by giving them as much rest as possible between games.

Off the top of my head it seems like the top performers of the fall were Cook, scoring six goals in two games, and Scanlan with 5 in three. Nobody really jumps off the page, but sounds like some younger players put up some solid performances, the Kim twins, Berkman and Rosa come to mind. Also it was good to see that Dordevic looks like he's back to normal, and most important of all no big injury news.

Obviously this post should come with a gigantic asterisk that says "FALL BALL", but a little concerned that Rhefuss didn't make much of an impact in the fall. Coming off last season I think it's imperative that he be a big contributor for Syracuse next year. He's a senior so it's not really super important for him to have a good fall, but I thought we might see a little more from him. Something to keep an eye on I guess.

Quick takeaways:
-The old offense relied on pulling slides away from the crease, the new stresses "adjacent" slides - coaching staff will try and utilize both. Current players seem to like new offense, seems like they are moving the ball much faster.
-Scanlan impressing, Mellen compares him to Jeff Teat, says he is a better passer than he expected him to be.
-Cook seems to be impressing the coaching staff.
-Mentions usual suspects on defense, also says Fernandez has looked good and might allow for Kennedy to play more close. I'd personally be surprised if this happens but we'll see.

Just a fall scrimmage but bit discomforting. Once activities resumed, only 5 weeks to rid the hiccups before opener.

Pat March making an impact
"The Orange grabbed assistant Pat March to run the offense. His experience at Princeton, where he ran a Top 10 offense, was apparent in the fall. It’s more fast-paced, motion-oriented with drives from the wings. It will at the very least, provide a change-up from last year’s offense, and possibly unless players like Tucker Dordevic and Chase Scanlan."

Last sentence doesn't make sense ... but at least they got recognition. I think they meant "unleash", instead of unless? Typos at IL are out of control these days.

Not meant for statement but rather questions

1q, Reading how March's scheme causes adjacent slides vs those from near crease. What type of player/position benefits most from that?. Is it a dodger , a step down shooter or still spread on ball movement?
2nd, read O stagnated some as Lehigh packed it in. Is this were a breakdown player ie Sowers is needed to open space or do we need to revert back to Dono's scheme that frankly produced for most ?

By packing it in I assume they mean they played a zone d. Typically you're trying to attack the areas in between the defenders or the corners to get the D into a 2 on 3, or 3 on 4, disadvantage to create space to shoot.

Here's a video of how Duke did it to us in the 2013 Natty:

By rotating the players you essentially are trying to force the D to make a mistake in how they are supposed to rotate with the direction of the ball. In this case they were popping Jordan Wolf up high. It took a few attempts but eventually we made a mistake and they were able to score.

(As an aside, Lacrosse Film Room is addictive - I can watch it for hours!)

I'm not sure if Lehigh played a zone or not. I wasn't there, but I would be kinda surprised if a team played zone in fall ball unless it was something they want to do a lot in the spring.

To attack a zone, you need all the components that you need to attack a man to man, but they need to be coordinated differently.

"Chase Scanlan is the new No. 22. The former Loyola midfielder landed at Syracuse—where he was formerly committed before going to the ‘Hounds for a fantastic freshman season. It wasn’t the only happening at Syracuse, which added Pat March to the staff after the departure of Kevin Donahue. The flip of Owen Hiltz to the program could be a sign of things to come from offensive coordinator Pat March, who also reworked the offense in fallball."

Thanks IT - I think the big takeaway is the shooting percentage is so low, last in the ACC and more than 10 points lower than leader Penn State. I wonder where they stood in terms of shots per game? I do like seeing that they led the ACC in fewest turnovers per game and the rest of the stats were near the top of the ACC for the most part. Think if the team improves shooting percentage they can really go places. Hopefully hiring March and bringing in Scanlan will help that.

Powell. Nod to Donahue on those man up stats too, hope we dont change that formula. Scanlan will be as dangerous on man up as Solomon, Voight and Trimboli were in 19.

Both Voigt and Solomon had very high sog of 70 % and 44% sh. Scanlan (e 34/16) was 70 sog % with 36% sh for Loyola. 5th yr Refhuss (e 20/30) likely bounces up sh% and assist totals with good health and surrounding cast .Cook and Seebold looked good in preseason but very unlikely to match output of either of the departed. Unit bring different look/ capabilities and combined stats may not tell full story, be more about synergies and overall output of entire offense.

Trimboli, Curry and Lipka all had much higher shooting % in 2018 and little reason under this scheme for them not to revert back and raise to over 30% sh . Same % achievable by Dordevic .Hard to expect Buttermore to be more accurate.

Team has more mobility and dodging ability and should be able to create better scoring opportunities for each other as long as ball is moved .

Played sabertician vs schedule and project overall scoring and assists averages bumping up to 14.2 and 7.6 which would be nice if ever realized
