2019 Yankees Thread...

So who had Cortes Jr. and Cessa combining for 90+ decently pitched innings this year?

Don't be shy, now. No need to be humble.

He was in SWB in 2017.

TJ Surgery in 2018.

Had a cup of coffee with Detroit in 2016.

Not a fan of the stat nerd era where an individual player can win MVP while competing in games that are completely meaningless.
scorcher ... the nerds over at Fangraphs heard you and looked into it.
"Despite removing a lot of the aspects of Trout’s game that make him a great player, and then more heavily weighting less-important factors like singles and numbers reliant on teammates, Trout still comes out as one of the greatest players in history. Traditional stats underrate Mike Trout and don’t do justice to his complete body of work, but they still put him alongside the all-time bests. "

I'm not saying he's not an all-time great. He is. He's in the HOF right now.

I'm saying there's no point giving him more MVPs representing a team that's inconsequential.

So he shouldn't get an award because he has already won the award in the past? The award is based yearly not career.

I think there is no doubt that he would be the MVP on any team. I think he is underappreciated because of the team he is on.

I'm saying if your team loses, you're not that valuable. Winning matters.

I'm ok viewing Trout as an anomaly and rewarding him for that because he's historically unprecedented. The exception has already been made though. He hasn't been overlooked.

It's a take certainly, but it's not one that is part of the award's description or widely held among voters. From 1991 through 2016, 26 seasons, the AL MVP's team won the pennant exactly ... once.

I'm a member of award the best player camp, except pitchers who have their own award - which is another debate.

Since this was after the trade deadline, even if the Yankees wanted to use him, they can't...correct?

He can be added to the 40 and called up if necessary. The rule just says that only players on Minor League deals who have not been promoted to the big leagues this year can be traded after the deadline.

Of course for him to get added, someone else has to either be DFA'd or 60 Day DL'd.

I'm not suggesting the MVP must come from the pennant winner, and I realize I'm pissing in the wind on my own here. The difference now is some nerds have convinced themselves that they have the reasons right.

Again, I am suggesting that it matters more what players do when their teams are winners/competitive, and it makes sense to me to have that show up in individual player accolades.

My gut tells me the Yankees and Dodgers would still be first place teams if DJ and Bellinger were not on the roster.

We don't know that though.

Hypothetical scenarios also should not be the basis for awards.
