UM Athletics Announces Stadium Capacity, Safety Protocol Plan for 2020 Football Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Athletics, in conjunction with Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins and local and state government officials, today announced its stadium capacity and safety protocol plan for the 2020 Hurricanes football home opener.

A maximum of 13,000 fans will be allowed to attend the home opener on Thursday, September 10, at Hard Rock Stadium against UAB. Kickoff time will be announced at a later date.

UM season ticket holders will have first priority to participate in an individual game on-sale. Additional details will be communicated via e-mail. If season ticket holders are not interested or able to attend games in-person, a portion or all of the funds in their account can be rolled over in support of the Canes United Covid-19 Relief Initiative. Their accounts can also be credited for the 2021 football season with the funds paid-to-date. A refund is also available if requested.

All seat locations, parking and tenure will be rolled over to the next season automatically. No action is needed for this to occur. UM Athletics has transitioned to a mobile ticketing system so all tickets and parking passes will be delivered electronically and must be scanned in on a mobile device at Hard Rock Stadium. Separate communication will be sent to UM students regarding attendance.

Policies for the 2020 season will include:

  • GBAC Star certification
  • Socially distanced seating clusters
  • All fans and stadium employees will be required to wear a mask when not actively eating or drinking
  • Upgrading Air Conditioning filters from Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) 10 to MERV 14 (Hospital Grade)
  • Mobile touchless entry with more points of entries and exits to help avoid bottlenecks at ingress/egress
  • Staggered gate entry with entry times listed on game tickets
  • Cashless experience for food service, parking and retail
  • New walk through metal detectors with touchless security screening to allow fans to keep all items in their pockets for faster entry
  • 1 metal detector for every 104 fans vs 1 metal detector for every 394 fans in 2019
  • Changing from manual to contactless toilets and faucets
  • No smoking inside the stadium or helixes
  • No tailgating for 2020 season with parking lots open two hours before kickoff instead of four hours
Upon entry, fans will go through a touchless security scan. Food, beverage, parking and retail will become a cashless experience supported by in-app mobile and credit card payment options. Express pickup for food and beverage will also be available. Furthermore, all manual faucets, toilet handles, toilets, soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers have been changed to automatic sensors to provide a touchless restroom experience.

These programs are in addition to Hard Rock Stadium becoming the first stadium in the world to receive GBAC STAR™ accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC), a Division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association. Hard Rock Stadium completed 20 program elements focused on cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention practices to control risks associated with infectious agents.
Wasn't it only like 3 weeks ago that Florida was the Covid capital of the world and Miami was the eye of the storm (pun intended)? Did they not learn anything from July down there? Someone please help me understand?

Of course things aren't much better here in Texas where UT students are back and they are anticipating 15k fans in attendance at UT home games.

We should make this offer to fans of away teams visiting the Dome. Let GT or NCSt or Wake fans pay $50 to have their cutout in a visiting fan section. Make up some lost revenue.

yeah, no doubt, but there seems to be a perception and bias on this board that the south, especially floridians, can't handle social distancing
We can’t. Am Floridian

No fans at Pitt and supposedly only 1,000 allowed at VPI's opener.

Hopefully Cuomo will allow SU some fans but doubt it if the billls aren’t having fans. I know Ryan Mcmahon is trying to get 10,000 fans for su and is making a little headway with it. Just depends what happens but hey 19,000 is better than 81,000 for the game at Clemson

Who's Ryan Mcmahon? Any relation to Vince?

I heard from within the AD they expect several thousand fans will be allowed but Coumo administration really is pushing SU to decide not to have fans.

If the state wants to kick some funds towards the school some way they should try and do that and if they don’t have fans.

If you can’t have fans will they allow piped in crowd noise?
Talked about that on sirius XM yesterday , coaches want to know for preparation. Should know soon.

The should let SU send out something to fans to let them record a "defense" or "lets go orange" to use.

If each group of fans is spread out, everybody wears a mask, and the air filtration system is at an acceptable level why can there not be 10k fans in the Dome? To me that’s much less of a risk than something like bars being open, which they have been for months.

If SU proposes a safe plan and they still get the cold shoulder then I agree with alsacs that’s some state funding would be nice.

Yes. I want piped in noise on every defensive play and lollipop sticks to line up kicks, just like in the old days when Beamer would come up here for his yearly whuppin!

It would be a shame to not allow piped in crowd noise. []_[] has been practicing for this moment for years.

So if football does actually happen, and Clemson does actually allow 19k fans to attend, and it seems like they have a safe plan for attending... What are the odds of Cuse fans being able to get their hands on one of those tickets? We're prolly looking at insane prices on stubhub, right?

TLDR- Does troop need to start looking for plane tickets to SC?

Ga Tech added alcohol sales? What a year to do that.

  • I'll take the bait!

Alcohol is a disinfectant. So, if a body consumes enough alcohol they will be disinfected. This, there can be nothing better to face the dangers of Covid than a stadium full of raging drunk football fans!

Or not. ;)

Agree, less risk than the supermarket, other stores, and public outdoor markets where there is no screening process in place.
