Good idea to throw out the numbers so you can be as subjectively negative as your narrative requiresDid you not watch the games the last 2 years? Your stats game is a waste of time.
I'm also guilty about waxing poetic about these two games. I went back and looked at his completions.
Against FSU: 5 bubble screens. 2 Fades to Custis. Two first read hot reads to slot receiver. 1 quick flare to RB and that TE back of the end zone throw to Ravian Pierce. Not a second read all day long.
Against UNC: More of the same. Both TDs came on first reads to Johnson (looked like he may have initially looked off the safety) and to Pierce on that same TE play. A couple more fades to Custis. More hot reads to the slot receiver. I did see two check down completions. One was a very nice toss to Taj on 1st and 10. The other was on 3rd and 17 to Strickland.
The Physical throws he made were impressive...but he wasn't exactly dissecting the defense apart with complex reads. We hoped that would come with more experience, and we just haven't seen the progression you would hope for.
2019 and 2020 were filled with anxious and panic filled throws. I hope much can be chalked up to the play of the OL, but i'm skeptical.
“Significantly” or “vastly” are both kind of words that mean “a lot”…
Let’s put some numbers on it. How much better than 2019 should we need him to be to win 7 games? Passing yards, completion %, and TD/INT.
I’ll do the same. I think an improved run game is a big part of the equation, so let’s throw in yards per carry or something.
I think this is fair. His sack rate has to go down. He was sacked nearly 2x as much as the other QBs the last 3 years. If it was just OL the rate wouldn't be so different.
He has to stop with the boneheaded plays. Running out of bounds. Throwing it away on 4th. Etc.
He has to extend plays or make plays away from the primary objective.
None of these can really be quantified via stats. His stats are fine.
He's got a solid arm and can throw a really nice deep ball. We've seen that plenty. Cannot stand how reliant we are on the passes to the sidelines, but I digress.I think this is fair.
I think it’s that stuff that gives me hope. It’s possible to grow into that stuff, though some is instinct. But if we run the ball and block better, I think he can put a nice season together.
I honestly think that some here should be forced to say what they like about the kid with no qualifiers - just to admit that he does some things well

Agree with lot of the comments in this thread. Has to have better game awareness and the improved o line is obviously the better direction for better overall QB play. We will see.
Look we know he has great physical talent, but it's managing a game, getting 1st downs and scoring TD's that we need from Tommy. I don't care if his completion percent is 55. As long as he throws for a lot of TD's that 's what we need.I think this is fair.

I know this gets said a lot on here but people know the former is what the defense gives and the latter is what it tries to take away, right?Tired of sideline passes
Throw quick hitters over the middle
If you care about those other things, you care about completion %Look we know he has great physical talent, but it's managing a game, getting 1st downs and scoring TD's that we need from Tommy. That's true. Does not cover every throw though. Not even close.I know this gets said a lot on here but people know the former is what the defense gives and the latter is what it tries to take away?
I’m not saying it does. Just that using the TE in the middle of the field is an empty talking point for the most partThat's true. Does not cover every throw though. Not even close.
Lol no. It’s been well documented on here by knowledgeable football posters that there are multiple areas that Tommy need to improve on. We all saw it with our own eyes.Good idea to throw out the numbers so you can be as subjectively negative as your narrative requires
For 2019 on Sports-Reference Devito was ranked based on passing efficiency rating 57 out of 102. Not horrendous.

On ESPN’s rankings he did not fare as well. For 2019 on ESPN, Devito’s ranking based on PAA was 104 out of 122.
For Ranking based on QBR he was 92 out of 122.

Yeah, I saw an offense with multiple problems all over the field. If you’re saying “he’s got to be significantly better” I’d like to quantify it.Did you not watch the games the last 2 years? Your stats game is a waste of time.
He also won us the game after Eric sputteredIMO FSU was his best game and all we asked him to do was manage the game. UNC he made mistakes that nearly cost us (INT and near INT). Besides the ugly ND game he also had issues in 2018 vs WMU, Wagner, and UConn.
CL - beating those birds to the chirpin’
If Chestnut is the same playmaker in games as he seems to be in practice, we might be on to something.
Me too. It's easy to like Tommy. He comes across as such a good kid . Always positive Total team guy who is a very hard worker. If he can improve his vision and pocket awareness he has a chance to be special. His arm talent is as good if not better than any QB to wear orange. It's the difference between a lab QB and a gameday QB.
He can make any throw. There's a sideline TD pass to Taj last year that's one of the best balls you'll see a QB throw.
But there's so much more to playing the position well. I really do hope he takes it to the next level in year 5.
Until he proves otherwise, DeVito is a great 7 on 7 player. That’s how he got his rep in the Elite 11.
