2021 USMNT Thread

Canada should get the #3 spot in qualifying. I’m wondering what the dynamic here will be if they make it. Seriously, people may actually not support them as their #1 team. Hard to explain, but World Cup stuff up here has been supporting other countries of your background etc for so long that people have formed huge fans of whatever team. Literally roads were closed when Italy won the euro.

I was born in Ukraine so I’d cheer for them over Canada and they’d be my number 2. But I’m super interested to see how it’s going to play out here if they qualify. Anyways, go beat Mexico!!!

Very good write up of who we should probably expect to see in the first set of Qualifiers in September (which is only a month away!). You might call it our current depth chart / "two deep".

Very nice- easily the best I've seen and someone who follows these guys closely vs just winging it.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty well informed. Had a good list of guys just bubbling below the radar, and a pretty comprehensive look at who is in form, who is injured, coverage for guys at different positions.

We may have a couple questions left to answer on the roster (who's the number 9 - maybe Tim Weah deserves a shot?), is Antonee Robinson good enough at left back? Should we play 3 at the back or 4?

But two entirely different sets of players both just beat Mexico's A Team, but for a couple injuries (which everybody has from time to time ...), and unless we are playing a really talented offensive team from South America or Europe, we got away with only 2 center backs against Mexico in a cup final.

This team is going to continue to grow through these first 3 qualifying windows. Eight games between Sept / Oct / Nov windows. By then, we will be halfway through qualifying. It's weird to say, but if I've been reading the articles correctly, the teams who qualify will be determined by April 2022, which is 8 months before the tournament. That seems an awfully long time to only be playing friendlies.

Rewarding the new MLS franchises. Not shading though...they have built phenomenal venues.

To me, it's much better to have a modern 20,000 soccer facility host games instead of a 80,000 seat football stadium with poorly-laid grass and too many opposing fans filling up the seats.

Looking at the FIFA qualifying dates, we have 3 windows this fall:

Sept 3 games, Oct 3 games, Nov 2 games

Then, there are only 2 more qualifying windows, at the end of January and the end of March.

For CONCACAF, both are 3 games per window. (We get an extra day for each window, when there are 3 games instead of 2.)

So, it's a 14 game qualifying campaign, over 5 windows in only 7 months.

Having a legitimate 30+ man squad is going to carry us through qualifying alone, no matter who is off their game, and who gets injured (so long as it isn't a ton of injuries ...).

Point being, we could lose an attacking guy, a central midfielder, a center back or wide man, and it wouldn't put our team in jeopardy, "Oh how could they possibly compete without him!"

We are way past that with this new generation of talent. We can take a few hits, and still have quality guys to say "Next Man Up", guys who can still win games.

I wish our football team had this much quality depth!

A P.S. about the 2022 FIFA calendar. The Africa Cup of Nations is being played this upcoming winter, a month which throws many of the teams in Europe into disarray as they lose players for so long.

The other thing to note is that because the World Cup is being played in the winter of '22 instead of the summer, that 2 of the usual fall FIFA international windows no longer remain on the schedule. Only one window for 2 friendlies in September.

Camp starts for Qatar on Nov 15 and the opening game on the 21st.

As I'm looking at this schedule again, it's unclear whether there are 4 more FIFA mandated spots in 2 weeks in May and June. The Qatar draw will have been determined a month before, so these can't be competitive matches, except maybe for those play-in games between borderline qualifiers from different confederations.

This May/June window and then September are the only 2 windows for the national team between March and the beginning of the World Cup in November. That's 8 months.

That's a long time for not being together as a group, and then being expected to perform at the top level, during mid-season for most European and South American based players.

I wonder if the USMNT might be allowed to hold a voluntary camp for a week in late June, especially if it was more a teaching and bonding thing, and not a heavy physical workload, with most players' preseasons right around the corner.

I think that the elimination of the 2 international windows this fall is the "give back" financially to the big European leagues for having a winter World Cup interrupt their domestic seasons for a month.

But it's going to harm preparations for national teams heading into the World Cup.

Lateral move in my opinion but at least he is getting some overseas experience.
Belgium rly rly good developmental league. Pushed out quite a few players.

They probably pay better than the Rapids. Mostly I agree with you other than a move to Genk, Brugge, or maybe Standard Liege

Looks like there will be another USMNT player to watch out for on Saturday/Sunday morning EPL broadcasts... Josh Sargent moving to Norwich City.

While I am glad that Josh got out of BL2, newly promoted EPL teams are pretty risky for young, unproven attackers. Norwich will see very little of the ball and spend most of their time defending if history is any proof. Also against Josh is that the EPL is a whole helluva lot faster and more physical than Germany.

Having said that, Josh is now in the biggest shop window in world... get to double digits in goals and his career will be made for at least next 5-6 years or so.

Norwich has some nice young players. I think they escape relegation and end up 14th

Another young American at a club that’s known for developing talent and has a huge following in Germany. Hopefully he gets time in the league too.

That is some good company.

Yeah, no pressure…
He was also phenomenal today. Put Leroy Sane in his pocket, had an incredible tackle on Lewandowski, won a few aerial duels with Muller, and handled Coman when he came on late. He led Gladbach in touches on the ball today and would have been MOTM if Jann Sommer hadn’t continued his purple patch from the Euros and ensured the 1-1 draw.

Awesome to see our boys showing out. Especially as my Gunners .. well.. meh.

Joe Scally was very good today. He probably will be the backup RB to Lainer but his ability to play LB will get him called up soon
