2022 Fall Ball

Just

Just the fact the freshman got work playing a D 1 college game and seemed to have played well is great news. Scores mean nothing the coaches are rotating kids in and out to get a look and get them playing time. Look at Cole Kirst he didn't play until game 2 and not much. We all know he will be a 1st line middie. They want him out there now with the young guys because of his leadership and can help keep them calm. I'm sure they aren't sure who will start and who will play on the 2nd line. They have an idea but once January comes and it's for real then they will start making decisions. No need to care about the score it doesn't tell us how good this team is. I was happy to hear Spallina went off. For him to be that comfortable his first scrimmage and light it up means he's gonna be ready to go this season. I think Simmons is gonna have a big yr. He was moved around at Denver and didn't need to be a top scorer yet still had 30 goals. Now as a leader on that attack line and Spallina feeding him he can have a huge yr. We know Hiltz will already and Spallina looks like he's ready to dominate as a freshman. I love that attack line it will be one of best in the country this yr. All comes down to the D stepping up. It don't have to be great just solid. I think the upgrade at DM and goalie will help big time. Teams attacked the DMs last yr. Really only Avalez was solid. Carter is fast and athletic but out of position a lot on slides not knowing when to release and who to pick up. He should be a lot better with that this yr and be solid. Then the 2 transfers and the freshman will be an upgrade to the 2nd and 3rd line from last yr. I know some think Murphy has a big jump but he should have no issues being he's athletic as any DM in the ACC and tougher then most. Has great footwork due to being a RB and LB in HS. His best games have been against St Joes especially the NEC tournament, Stonybrook in the LI Cup championship and covered Knobloch from Rutgers a lot who had just 1 goal and wasn't even when he was on him. He rises to the occasion and will suprise how solid he man's up guys. Bolea looks a little small and playing physical was his game in D 3 that won't work in the ACC with his size but he's also athletic and has pretty good footwork. Compare him to the guys last yr footwork wise and not even close. Then Will Mark is a lot better then Gavin. He's experienced and ppl talk about his 56% save percentage but he was saving that getting 30 to 35 shots on goal a game. Less shots he could have been around 60%. Others say he faced Wagner which he did but also 15th ranked St Joes 4 times in 2 yrs, Rutgers he saved 50% off 30 shots, Umass, Drexel, Stonybrook, Hofstra, Bryant who was very talented and Hobart No not ACC but many players who are now in the ACC or could be. All I'm saying is I'm so excited for this season I think the offense is gonna be top notch and the D will be solid and much improved from last yr. If the Fogos can hang around 50% or close then this team is heading to the tournament. I can't wait to watch Spallina I will be flying into Syracuse from Long Island for a lot of games this yr. So excited I love football yet this yr I can't wait for Lacrosse season. I think this team is gonna suprise a lot of ppl how good it will be. Sorry for the long post I just got excited today and can't wait for the schedule to come out so I can figure out what games I can attend. Lol

Paragraphs my man, you gotta use them.

Nice summary by IL, and the video highlights are great. Always fools gold to try and draw big conclusions on highlights, but the comments regarding the ball movement are no joke. The ball is spinning in some of these clips. I also loved this quote,

"Talking to (Finlay) Thomson about why the offense seemed to move the ball so well, he brought up assistant Pat March’s “one touch” system, which I inferred to mean both that every player gets a touch on every possession and that a player only has to have the ball in his stick for one beat to make an impactful play."

Foy brings up the fact that sometimes you still need a dodger to take things over when the ball movement isn't working - he brings up last years BU team. I have to think/hope Cole Kirst will be an answer there, and hopefully Spallina can be an impact player in that part of the game. Still, after last years offense, this talk of motion and passing is music to one's ears.

Last bit about the offense, but Thomson looks like such a special player. He just seems to have a cool way about him and the way he passes and shoots the ball. He just has a presence on the field I really dig. Throws a nonchalant behind the back pass to Simmons that doesn't result in a goal, but the effortlessness in which he does it is really something. Lots of talk about Spallina but Thomson might be just as impactful.

Looks like Harrison Thompson made some nice early saves in the scrimmage. Also Landon Clary causing a turnover and then back-kicking the ball to Thompson in the crease was a great play.

Hiltz will be a serious threat off the dodge next season. Can't forget about him. Guys like Birtwistle Rhoa and Kempney should provide some spark there too. Leo also looks like a guy with enough moves to at least give ssdms some trouble.

Very much agree on Thomson. Pretty much all my favorite plays involved him. He can really shoot it too.

Also how great is it to see the local product Rosa out there on offense? Thought it was maybe a typo for Rhoa in one of the reports we had, but it's really him. He had a few shots in the alumni game last year that were incredible so this is not entirely out of left field. Who knew you could be from the area and play D1 lacrosse without transferring to Salisbury ;)

This one made me laugh

Thomson looked very comfortable out there, whether at midfield or attack.

I do think there are a handful of guys that can be a threat off the dodge. In the video you can see Leo's goal off the hitch move on the left wing. I believe Kempney scored against HPU with a dodge down the alley. Kirst put his shoulder down up top against HPU and was going for a bull dodge, although I think he ended up getting rid of the ball. Joey definitely had a few times where he tried to back down his defender but I don't think he had any goals off of those, just a few drawn penalties.

Looks like Kempney drew a slide in one of the highlights too. Got a hockey assist out of it.

Is the staff not big on Cole Kirst? Find it odd that he wasn't taking regular runs with the new guys...If he is indeed banged up, why even have him dress...

He's a seasoned vet so they probably wanted him to run with the younger guys to lead them. He's a team first player and perfect to help out the young kids. He's a grad student so he will be ready to roll come January. They know what they got in him already. Fall ball is more for the younger guys getting there feet wet. That's why u can't go by any scores from these scrimmages. U don't wanna see them get blown out but the fact the young kids played and did well is big. They know the jump in talent level and what to expect. These kids are gonna contribute this yr right away which is awesome. Cole Kirst is huge having on this team with the freshman just for his leadership abilities alone.
