2022 Portal

With 1300 players in the portal now, one would think that recruiting the portal effectively is not only necessary, but the programs that do it successfully will directly translate that recruiting advantage to more success on the court.

Others have argued that the "portal" is no different than recruiting transfers prior to the portal, and it's just a fancy moniker and tracking database for what has always gone on with program to program transfers.

It's a typical strawman argument. The gamechanger with the portal now is the sheer volume of players available. 1300 transfer players all available at once in the portal requires an active and sustained recruiting strategy.

If our default approach is as previously confirmed:

That is a terribly limiting strategy and can be summed up in one word - LAZY.

It's also negligent.
Another appropriate word to describe the roster construct.

You have schools that literally won a national title last year that are active in the portal.

Yet we go 16-17 and say "nope, we're good!"

Unfathomable.

these takes right now about the state of the roster/willingness to get portal players are 100% understandable and not without warrant. I myself am in wait-and-see mode, and if/when it becomes apparent JB's constructed roster can't cut it next year I'll join (once again) the chorus

That's fair. I'd be more in that basket too if we were entirely in the dark on this stuff, but Dasher has made some informed statements and has a very good track record in that regard, so I tend to believe him.

Intend to believe dasher about what? Just curious. Not privy to the information of those posts...

One thing I worried about, was that Jb was hoping or saving a spot for Jimmy if the Ivy or NCAA allowed ivy kids their 5th year. I have no inside info on that, just something I worried about. Although to be honest, and this is an indictment on our forward position, I wish Jimmy was back. I honestly can't believe we aren't seeking forward help.

I'll answer for him. I have been saying because I have been told by people that know, that we are not seeking forward help in the portal. And as further proof, we haven't seen our name mentioned with any forwards in the portal, have we? Jb is happy to go with what we have. Either he is playing chess while the rest of us are playing checkers, or he is really missing the boat.

Thanks. I read a lot of posts but tough to remember each and every one.

Tough to understand. Based on recent results, missing the boat is more likely. But we'll all watch the games and see for ourselves soon enough.

And if I hear, well these forwards aren't ready I will go nuts. We could have told you that back in April coach.

"If I had anyone else, he wouldn't play a minute"

So what does this staff see that isn't at all clear in the tape on these frosh to not go after a forward in the portal? I mean now not even a backup C after Ballard so just an open spot.

I think they will still *try* to fill this spot - not sure how hard or to what extent they'll try... as to the forwards, yeah can't help but be very very skeptical

I believe dasher also said they are targeting a grad transfer backup C that (if landed) is more proven and polished than Anselem and should push Edwards in practice and be a ready-to-go option to insert to rest Edwards for minutes or in foul-out situations.

Sounds good to me if it happens...

Still think we need a proven to replace Swider as well... I guess we'll see on that.

I'd take Jimmy in a heartbeat right now.

Do you mean they're targeting a specific person that we haven't heard about? Or that's their general strategy and they hope one becomes available?

Yes, we are targeting a specific grad transfer C who is proven and capable... we do not have a name. That is what dasher intimated, at least...

I'm relieved to hear that. When I didn't hear about Cuse being in the mix for any bigs, I was worried they gave up on transfers and decided to role with the 12 they have. I'm surprised they don't take a more broad-brush approach and contact every big who would help the team, and then take the first to commit.

I just hope we get someone across the line that is competent.

We were "targeting" Ballard, as well... and we know how that went.

Slim pickings for grad student centers. Maybe it's Nicholas Kratholm (Niagara) or Eduardo Lane (San Jose State). A stud center isn't coming for a backup role. There's a handful of available PFs who could play center, but I read, also posted by dasher, that they aren't contacting any forwards to keep Benny and the freshman happy.

Yeah, my concern was that I didn't hear/read anything about other contacts after Ballard "shocked" us. We definitely need a transfer big who can hold it down for 10 minutes per game.

Nicholas Kratholm makes sense. Grad center from Niagara, a local mid-major. Would probably be happy to be a backup at an ACC school. Valedictorian of Niagara with a degree in biotech. Obviously academics are important to him so maybe he'll want to go to the ivy league or other elite academic school for a master's that would help him post-basketball. Not sure what SU's grad options look like as I went to Siena -- however based on a quick online search it appears SU has a biotech masters. He also plays forward, but probably wouldn't command the start like other transfers would, so maybe he'd be a good option who wouldn't upset Benny and who could slide over to the 4 if necessary.
