First and second mid line predictions ?

= Curry, Quinn, Buttermore

- Cook, Ferris, Fiorini? (Magnan, Birtwhistle, True frosh Corsi?)

Really have no idea what to expect /who rolls out as the second group =or will we run the 1st heavily and rotate in 1or 2 guys to give a breather and a slightly different look thoughts ?

Your first line looks spot on, just as long as Buttermore is healthy. I think the starters have a lot of potential, not just because of their talent but also because I think they will compliment each other well. Curry obviously leads the line, but his passing and dodging ability should set up the other two for easy scoring opportunities. Also defenses can't pack the middle as both Quinn and Buttermore can shoot well from outside. Quinn cut down on the mental mistakes last year and put up decent numbers on the second line. Buttermore has had a rough two seasons, although neither one was a full season as 2020 ended early and he sustained a season ending injury last year. Still, he's a former 20 goal scorer (as a second liner no less), who will most likely draw a short stick every game.

The second line is a total mystery to me. I can't remember a season where there was this this much uncertainty about who would play on that line. I think Birtwistle is the closest thing we have to a sure thing, but even that isn't a sure thing. There are a lot of names though. I would add Tyler Cordes and Brett Tenaglia to your list as well. I am rooting for Fiorini since he has size and is a pass first midfielder, but he has hardly seen the field in his time at SU. I really liked Cordes' high school tape, he has a ton of energy.

I hope they don't put Cook at midfield, but given that Dordevic will be at attack, maybe they could invert the two to try and draw mismatches. Cook could handle the ball behind the cage on a short stick defender, and Dordevic could draw his defender away from the goal where they are more likely to be uncomfortable. Of course SU could do this strategy with a lot of other attackmen turned middies, so it doesn't need to just be Cook.

One aspect I think that needs to come in to play is defensive ability. The midfielders last year did not play good transition defense. It felt like they were responsible for a good two to three goals a game and that might be conservative. A lot of the players in line for a midfield spot are natural attackmen (Cook, Corsi, Birtwistle and Tenaglia). I would be a little nervous about putting too many attackmen at midfield, but this is something SU has done before (Gallaso, Maltz and Ward).

One potential wrinkle is that they have a number of defensive midfielders who have pretty good offensive abilities. If Gait is serious about playing uptempo, I would think/hope that players like Aviles, Rosa and Rice not only get a chance to take shots in transition, but also stay on the field and try and create mismatches.

Anyone know the status of our guys with health issues? Buttermore back in full form? Tenaglia recovered from whatever knee injury he sustained last year? Is Ferris over that foot injury? DePietro moving like his old self (pun)?

Great thoughts all around. I forgot about Tenaglia and Cordes...and others...Really hope they put the roster out soon...not sure what the holdup is given many other teams have released ...

Like the idea of Corsi and Aviles subbing in on offense. Both are capable scorers and athletic all field players. Not in love with either first or second line possibilities. Quinn might fit on the EMO, but he does not defend or pass well. Buttermore also seems more EMO solid than first liner. Hope someone emerges from among the newbies, because for me, middie lines are weaknesses. Ferris seemed lost on the field all last year and Cook, well he looked like Cook. Ferris was too slow to play well all over the field. Fiorini is a puzzle. Big and athletic, he seemed out to lunch on the field. Tenaglia should show up somewhere this year. He was a fine attack at Davidson. I remain very skeptical of this year's team, but I am hopeful.

Spallina NLI discussion starts the show and Hiltz is on at the 31 min mark.

This source is closer to the program than me (I barely register haha). He also said it looks like Thompson so far looks like the starter in cage and that the navy transfer Cordes will run with the 2nd mids. Lastly, the rookie transfer from Yale, Caccamo or however you spell it will likely start at close.

Nothing 100 percent confirmed, but the person providing the info is solid.

Can confirm that Caccamo has impressed, he will definitely be seeing a lot of time. Cordes has also looked good, 2nd line would make sense.

Anyone else you can speak to as a clear candidate for 2nd line mid? Position is very up in the air in general. I know Magnan and Fiorini where UA-AAs but I would like to see youth on second line. We need to develop talent at midfield to be ready for years to come with Spallina, Hiltz, Thomson leading the way at attack.

IMO a Cordes, Birtwhistle, Corsi 2nd line mid could be fun and would be important for building the future.

I am hoping as the season goes on we put enough together to steal a couple games in that top tier of yours. Maybe one of UNC and Duke. Taking care of business against army would be nice as well. I would say they are a step behind those other teams. I think we can win at least 1 of 4 against our two x2 opponents. We should have the advantage at the faceoff x against both those teams since we seem to have the upper hand on Lasalla and ND replaces their two guys. Win the games we are supposed to win and that gets you to 9 wins right there. There may be some dark stretches as there is no breathing room with this schedule.
Like the optimism but Cuse schedule is not a pillowy one ie Rutgers and that over under line for Cuse is a reflection of such.
Many top teams shade their season starts to gather footing which would have helped here as much is unsettled Keeping my expectations low especially early, a 1-3 start will not surprise, If Cuse wins nine games then some others have surprisngly emerged to augment the core and Gait will be deserving of COY

I would expect there will be some fluctuating as the season goes on, for example you may have a young attackmen start to come on that may move Dordevic around like Mariano. Assuming Tucker stays at attack most of the time I think you could also see a second line that fluctuates depending on performance and the younger mids hopefully getting up to speed.

As for the 2nd mid line, assuming Buttermore is healthy and on the 1st line - Both are far from certain, I would expect a second line involving some combination Birtwistle, Cordes, Borges, Tenaglia and Corsi. I believe Magnan and Fiorini are also in the mix but time is running out for both and its essentially do or die this year with the talent coming in next year as Kempney is expected to start from Day 1 with Spallina.

Pre-season rumblings can often turn out to be untrue but I have heard positive info on Borges more so then Cordes so will be interest to see if 1 or both challenge for PT. Lots of young guys at mid and attack with a golden opportunity to force the staffs hand for PT, this is the year to make it happen.

This ^, SU's schedule is daunting, Maryland as the 2nd game is a tough ask for this team. At least a few lesser known teams to start the year would have been a big help as the team tries to get its feet underneath it.

The only good thing for Cuse in playing Maryland early is Maryland will have to take a few games to find their new offensive entity. So that "could" be a good thing.

OR, because Maryland doesn't know who their pimp ball carrier is yet, and they run a lot of motion and play off of Wisnauskas' strength which is feeding and spot shooting when given opportunities, we could get torched.

Our defense has been especially bad OFF BALL in the last few years, but I think that's mostly because our SSDM's not wearing #9 have STUNK. They get beat all over the field, forcing full on slides, and that has hurt us the last two years even with #9 running around playing well. He couldn't guard everyone sadly.

Frosh are frosh unless they are one of the special ones ie ONeill, Hiltz, Kavanaugh .You see many if not most top 20- 100 talents at other ACC teams not seeing field in 1st year or two because ACC play is quite a jump from even the best h.s. play At UVA #1 Shellenberger had to redshirt and top ranked recruits such as Dickson, Garno,, Conner were years in before being deemed ready to see some field. That team is now loaded with experienced first time mid starters. Cuse is a program that should be competitive every year. may not be as deep as others so more opportunity may present but there was a absence of buzz in fall outside dm Rice . No Hiltz or Trimboli that can seamlessly be plugged in. Assuming Buttermore is healthy , he. Quinn,4th yr Fioriniare and perhaps Cook are most likely at start to fill mid rotation with a sprinkling of some youngsters mentioned . Hope Corsi gets good audition in scrimmages.
