2023 Roster / Staff

No James Williams on the roster.
He was barely used last year so not a surprise.

There are still three other guys on the roster who can punt.
Not trying to sound cold blooded here.

Hopefully he finds his mojo again. He was a top 10 kicker in the nation when he was a senior.

4 more walk-ons added to roster

There were four more walk-on players in attendance for Wednesday’s practice: tight end Max Runyon (38), linebacker Marcale Billue (59), running back Tyler Chandler (31) and kicker Jadyn Oh (98).

Runyon (6-foot, 228 pounds) is a redshirt sophomore who played four years of high school ball at St. Joseph’s Regional High School in Saddle River, New Jersey.

Billue (6-foot, 230 pounds) is a freshman and a Syracuse native. He played defensive end at Corcoran High School, where he had 45 tackles, including seven sacks, and was a team captain his senior season.

Chandler (5-foot-8, 170) did not play football at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Plantation, Florida, but was on the lacrosse and soccer teams and ran track. His father also attended SU. The freshmen join a robust running back room that is now up to eight members.

Oh (6-foot-1, 165 pounds) played football and soccer at Chantilly High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He is also a freshman.

Did we just pick up a new safety, possibly a rover?

Our new CB coach Travis Fisher spent the last five seasons at Nebraska so it's no coincidence that we have been able to bring in three portal transfers from Nebraska; Myles Farmer, 6'3", 200 lbs., RS JR. rover (?), Jaeden Gould, 6'2", 205 lbs., RS-Fr, safety (4- star out of HS), and Jalil Martin, 6'2", 190 lbs., Rs-Fr, safety.

Coach Fisher knows them as players and young men and may have recruited these players to Nebraska and now to Syracuse.

If this is accurate, we have very crowded safety room for Coach Perkins to work with.

11 scholarship safeties.

Simmons, Sr
Greenwood, RS-Jr
Farmer, RS-Jr
Barron, Jr
Clark, Jr
Seabourn, Jr
Folk, RS-So
Oliver, RS-So
Perry, Rs-Fr
Gould, RS- Fr
Martin, RS-Fr

Let the competition begin. It will only make us better (unless it disrupts the culture).

Won’t he have to sit out because the portal is closed.

He graduated in May so he is a grad transfer. I'm not familiar with all the specifics, but rules for grad transfers are different than the undergrad student-athlete who enters the portal.

We seem to have plenty of depth at S/R for 2023, but several guys could be gone after 2023: Simmons, Greenwood, Barron and Clark?
  • Simmons - out of eligibility after 2023
  • Greenwood - has a year of eligibility, but does he stay or transfer out if he's burried on the depth chart. He's been at SU since for 5 years (2019) and will likely graduate or already has.
  • Barron - will have a year remaining, but is he going to be tempted to try the NFL? He walked in May and is finishing his degree this fall. IMO, another year would help his development.
  • Clark - will have a year remaining, but is he going to be tempted to try the NFL? IMO, another year would help his development.
  • Seabourn - has a redshirt year remaining. Could redshirt in 2023 and be a RS-Jr in 2024. Coming out of JC he may need time to get his academics in order.
  • Folk - if he's buried on the depth chart will he consider hitting the portal?
  • Oliver - he transferred in last year. Can't transfer again until he graduates.
  • Perry - injured last season. I'm sure he's watching to see if a path to playing time opens up for him at SU.
  • Gould - transferred in last spring. Can't transfer again until he graduates.
  • Martin - transferred in last spring. Can't transfer again until he graduates.

If Farmer needs to sit 2023 out, he will have one season of eligibility remaining in 2024. We might need him in 2024 more than we need him this season.

As of 3 days ago, Farmer was still in Lincoln watching a Nebraska Soccer game.

Where did you see that he's transferring here?

Here is Farmer's recruiting profile from HS. He's from Atlanta, Georgia.

Was a high three-star [87.10 rating] with offers from Oregon, Ole Miss, West Virginia, VT, Louisville, NC State, Minnesota, and others in addition to Nebraska -- where he originally landed.

6-3 200 pounds, started 11 games last year, finished second on the team in tackles as a sophomore last year. Sounds like he's got two more years of eligibility.

On the negative side of the ledger, sounds like the issue with him is that he had a DUI [.123 BAC], which led to a suspension.

Could it happen? Syracuse - Can't pickup a 12th scholarship safety, because we have 3 scholarship punters?

James Williams has left. I believe we now have 2 punters on scholarship.
Wow, very positive. The kid looked extremely unhappy during the Spring game; and was off by himself, like a pariah, most of the game. Seems like a positive result for both parties.
"Only" 2 scholarship punters, yippy!
