The Donaldson trade was such. Although, I think the point of the trade was to get IKF and get rid of Sanchez, but they had to take Donaldson to get everything to work and because the Yankees don't care about money (until they do), Cash was like whatev's.
The Donaldson acquisition also came after a season in which a talking point for many fans and media was the team needed better defense. Donaldson is shell of his former offensive self, but he is still an elite third basemen (better than Urshela). Of course, as it worked, there is no doubt about with whom the Yankees would have been better off the last two seasons.

I'm not saying that they didn't have a reason to take him on, but IKF won a gold glove at 3B, too.
Cashman likes paying for previous production and usually it's overspending for mediocre or average production or very marginal upgrades. And I don't have an issue with that until they're using it as an excuse to avoid signing specific FAs and/or why the team is under-performing in certain areas.

Sure? So do lots of teams. Relievers are generally overvalued, highly fungible and generally yo-yo around good-great-horrible. And bullpens don't help much when the team can't score more than the opponent.
Team A: 2.42 K/BB ratio, .631 Opp OPS, 1.177 WHiP, 2.27 R/27PA
Team B: 2.43 K/BB ratio, .695 Opp OPS, 1.301 WHiP, 3.09 R/27PA
Team A is the Yankees relievers, Team B is league average.
One thing Cashman could do here is be more like his buddy Billy Beane and trade those guys when they're peaking knowing that he can just pull up another 2-3 flamethrowers from AAA.
ETA: he also was spending $30m a year on two closers as recently as last season.
