2023 Yankees Season

The Boss lost his way in the late 80s. The Buhner/Phelps trade is well documented, but it's almost criminal how bad the starting pitching was in those years.

The ace patrol of Rick Rhoden, Andy Hawkins, Dave LaPoint, Tim Leary, Eric Plunk, Greg Cadaret, Scott Sanderson, Chuck Cary and on and on.

Wasn't until Melido Perez in 1992 that they finally had a reliable starter. Then added Jimmy Key, Jim Abbott in 1993 and away we went.
Frank Costanza agrees.

And a lot of those 80s teams were pretty good, but just super unstable thanks to GSIII's antics and no job safe, plus the constant draining of the farm system for older depreciating players and tons of underperforming players getting lots of PAs and innings. It was pretty similar to the teams of recent vintage.
George was a tough owner, but he was a good owner. No one questioned whether he muddled too much. Obviously, he did, but would you guys want an owner who sat on their hands and did nothing, because that is what is going on now.

Ideally, i would want an owner who trusts the people he/she hires to do their jobs and also provides them with the resources they require to succeed at their jobs.

Of course. But if you were the owner, would you give Cashman and Boone a pass on this season?

For those of you still scoring at home (and why the hell would you be?)...

Both Weissart and Mooch pitched for SWB tonight.

If you have a $250 million dollar payroll and there is nobody in the system who can step in for a pitcher sporting an ERA of 8, you have failed as a GM.

I watch this team going in thinking this will be the game where they turn the corner. Ugh, what a disaster of a season after starting hot out of the gate. I don't know what the answer is but it seems to me that something is broken and has been for quite some time now.

Orioles are the team of the next 5 years.

I didn’t watch the game tonight and didn’t miss it. I had watched a vast majority of the games up until the recent run of games sold off to various streaming services. The fact that the team sucks makes it easier to miss. I honestly don’t care. I have a root canal later this morning and I’m sure it will be as enjoyable as the Sunday loss to the Marlins. I’m ready for the season to end.

2nd worst hitting team in the league. No pop.

The doubles thing is something I've keyed on since May/June. They get some guys on base, but the only extra base hits they get are HRs and those don't come frequently enough to score runs. Mix in some doubles which clear bases and don't need an EV of 100+mph to be a hit. Selling out for a HR is a thing, surely, I'm not sure how to quantify the pros and cons versus not selling out for HRs and teams like the Braves are definitely swinging for the fences.

I was looking back at some of those 80s and 90s teams that were good ... 1985, goddamn, having prime Ricky and still very good Willie hitting in front of prime Donnie Baseball and Winnie? Oof.

Not to rub anything in, but last night was a pretty good indicator that things aren't great with the Yankees bats. Bryce Elder hasn't exactly been unhittable since the All Star break,

Advanced stats do not paint a much rosier picture.

The Yankees are 19th in wRC+ with a 96 (league average is 100). Also, they are 29th in base running with a BsR of -11.6.

Pitching is not good either. They are 20th in FIP 4.40 and 17th in xFIP 4.29.

It's not what you want

I try not to ever push for firing (unless there are non-sport related transgressions, like arrests etc), but how can Boone and Cashman come back?
