2024 Holiday Bowl- Syracuse vs. Washington State December 27th, 8pm ET

I don’t know if this was already posted, but Wazzu’s new starter has attempted seven passes all season. He previously played for Bryant.

Yeah if they weren’t playing us I would feel really bad, I am happy we will have that much better of a chance to smash them now, I don’t care about details of who was depleted, 10 wins sells. But, yes, they and OSU got so screwed, two good programs that just didn’t have the proverbial curb appeal to “waste” a share of the pie, even a reduced one like Cal and Stanford got.
They got screwed and then they screwed over the MWC and destroyed their conference, so I feel less bad for WSU and OSU.

That whole thing is weird, you would think the MWC would absorb the two schools but I guess it had to be the other way around to preserve Pac assets, licensing etc?

What if Syracuse paid the $1.5/$2M to Mateer. We have a need in 2025 and could get him out of this upcoming game. No chance, I know. But it could happen--portal directly influencing a game result. For example, what if Penn State did that to SMU and Boise St. Offer huge money to get key players to portal to them for 2025 AND keep them out of a playoff game. This could get ugly.
It could get even uglier than that. Let's say I'm a big NIL donor for a school that wants Mateer. So we backchannel before he enters the portal, and I lock down a $1.5 million NIL deal with him, but I tell him there's an extra $50K in a bag right now if he doesn't enter the portal or breathe a word of this to anyone for three days.

I then send a few dudes to Vegas to spread a few million around on Syracuse before the line moves, securing myself high six figures or low seven figures of expected value after the line moves.

You're living up to your name.

I think the ACC didn’t want to share any more of their smaller than the Big 2 pie. Maybe if they were willing to take an SMU deal but they aren’t SMU so I am sure they would have said no to that
This is short-term vision from the ACC, though. Having three schools that aren't geographically aligned makes the ACC vulnerable. How many seasons like this one does SMU have to put together before the SEC or B1G come calling? If Cal or Stanford do well, the same applies to them. If they don't, jokes on the ACC anyway.

The ACC's only path to long-term viability is expanding to a truly national conference, matching it with on-field success, and maximizing revenue on a new TV deal as soon as possible. On the other hand, their short-term incentives as you pointed out are not aligned with rolling the dice on other schools and there aren't exactly a bunch of sleeping giants out there like SMU.

I thought of this too. Shoeless Joe Jackson level stuff, right? Probably the NFL most weeks... ha ha.

Maybe but casinos have sophisticated ways to connect dots

Yeah and I'm sure that leaked info and bags of money have always been a thing in CFB, but not to the degree that the potential exists for it now. I think it's less of a thing in the NFL actually, because the likelihood of being caught is higher and the penalties for it are so severe. Plus you don't have wide open free agency during the season.

Back when I covered the Eagles, Andy Reid used to leave practices open to the media, even on the day they'd run their scripted plays to start the game. There was a level of trust, and regretfully I had the ethics not to put money on Brent Celek's over on receiving yards when I knew they had a deep shot scripted to him on one of the early plays that would put him over by itself. That would have been a victimless "crime," and I could have made more money putting a couple hundo on stuff like that every week than I was making working ~40 hours a week covering the team. Nowadays nobody has open practices beyond the first 15 minutes or so when players are warming up and doing drills that divulge zero information beyond what will be in the injury report anyway.

Regretfully I also had the ethics not to hold and take a picture with the Lombardi when a Seahawks staffer offered it to me after I took a picture for him. Man that was stupid. That's the one I really regret, I was out of the business a couple years later and the ethical argument against taking the picture with it was flimsy at best. What, I'm going to cover some dude who's name I don't know on a team I never cover outside that one game favorably because I took a picture with the Lombardi?

For sure, the money would have to be spread around. I don't know how significantly it would have to be spread, and books talk to each other and track this kind of stuff, and you'd need people with a track record of making large CFB wagers without being sharps to get the money down... Although I think I'm going out on a very sturdy limb when I say that rich boosters at schools in Oklahoma and Texas have no shortage of buddies who make large CFB wagers in Vegas all the time.

To be clear, I highly doubt this happened with Mateer or anything, I'm just saying it's a very plausible scenario that will probably play out at some point with someone if it hasn't already...

yeah no one remembers that we played our bowl game without Shrader and co, they just remember we got slaughtered
I remember nothing about that game, not exaggerating, can't tell you a single thing that happened, or who they even played. Purdue, maybe? Wasn't the slightest bit upset.

We had a TD overturned due to a stupid penalty and then stopped trying after that.

This has always fascinated me about Wazzu. Every GameDay since 2003! What a network and job by Wazzu faithful. I admit the first thing I look for each Saturday on GameDay is that flag.

Getting a little nervous about this game given the circumstances. We really need to stomp them for win #10.

Hopefully, we have come down off the high of the Miami game. The fact that we did not play well in either game coming off bye weeks is crossing my mind. WSU will be playing short handed, but most likely care free with no expectations. We didn't exactly blow anyone out (not counting Holy Cross) this year. Can't let them hang around.

I hear you as WSU is coming in this game feeling disrespected and the players want to show the world they can play. They are circling the wagons. We can not take this game lightly.
