2024 Schedule...

Except High Point is essentially an honorary member of the ACC at this point that regularly plays Duke, UVA and UNC. They’ve pulled upsets before. It might work out better than you think.
even in 2019 when they went 13-3 and beat uva and unc im not sure they finished in the top 20 of rpi. since then they have been a .500 team at best. 2-6, 8-6, 7-8, 9-8. they got stomped by a mediocre unc team last year. it just isnt a high upside game. its better than st. bonnies though thats for sure lol

the kind of game that does nothing for u...almost no chance of being a top 20 RPI win

I think it should be fine assuming this is the only game of this nature. I agree that multiple games like this don't work unless ur a UVA/Duke/Maryland type team where It won't really matter. With Army and Cornell supposedly back on the schedule with Hop and supposedly Maryland again and few mid range teams SU should be OK as long as they win a few of the Army, Conrell, Hop, Maryland matchups.

Highpoint @ Cuse, March 2nd. per a HP parent.

Looks like Gary wants to go with a similar pattern as last year, play a few decent teams to start, then a few monsters (assuming Army and Maryland) and then a breather type ie probably Highpoint, maybe Bart and then back to it with Hop and the ACC.

I’m counting 18 events on the navy schedule. Doesn’t the events include the fall scrimmages?

I believe the total number is 18 including fall scrimmages. Alumni events I don't believe count.

High point is now in a conference that is smaller and stronger on average across the board than the 2019 socon. Bonnies the only true in conference bottom feeder whereas in 2019 they were forced to play Mercer Bellarmine Furman VMI and a Jacksonville team still figuring it out. Also played an 0-13 bonnies to start the season that year on top of that. Odds were stacked against them to get a high RPI that year even with the big wins, and then they went and lost to 4-10 St. Johns too, which is hilarious after just beating future champ UVA.

I would feel a good deal better about it if they didn't have some voluntary RPI drains of their own still on the schedule (at least as of last year) against teams like VMI and (shudder) Detriot Mercy Hampton and Queens. Maybe you want to give the little guys a shot, but that is just bananas to have all three of those and you hope it is a one time thing. But in spite of that games last year agianst GTown Duke UNC along with multiple against St Joes and Richmond due to the conference tourney. Umass a good in conference team as well. Hopefully they drop at least one or two of those major drain teams this year while still scheduling challenging OOC opponents besides us. If so their strength of schedule will be passable.

Agreed, hopefully they aren't playing to many dregs or perhaps some of those teams will be reasonably improved.

Some of the RPI stuff is crapshoot. 2 years ago St. Bonaventrue won 10+ games and I believe won the conf tourney or at least made teh champ game. Their RPI # was decent. This past year they fall off a cliff. Hobart and Albany are similar, both are usually decent teams who are in the tourney hunt within their conference. Last 2 years they haven't been great and their numbers have hurt SU. I think Hobart is supposed to be improved this year. Not as such on Albany though they do have some O talent.

In the grand scheme of things our task is the same as last year. You have to beat a couple elite teams. We close out one of those games against the ACC giants last year and we are in the tourney, with the fact we played Holy Cross and Bonnies not being a factor outside of maybe seeding etc. Heck we would have probably been commending Gaits brilliant breather strategy or something. Since we whiffed against every elite or near elite team we faced last year we were going to miss the tourney even if we did something like not play Bonnies and Holy Cross. You can't go 0-6 against tourney teams and expect to get in, even with a more fine tuned schedule.

I don't know how talented Albany is, but I watched them practice some last night, and they are noticeably "bigger" than in past years (even without Gash who is a really sweet kid). Also, Piseno is still excellent.

They definitely have some talent especially on offense and Piseno is a weapon. Albany hasn't had that real alpha player they usually lean on to make everyone better in a while and defensively they have really struggled even though they have a decent FOGO.

This is my first Official Post and not completely related to ACC Tournament location or 24’ Sched. Here goes. Was listening to the Cross Commission Podcast over the weekend. A good listen, if you’re not familiar. They mentioned something offhand that Cuse does not bid for the NCAA Qtr Finals anymore. Anyone know if that is true? Also, 26’ FF needs a new Host. Any thoughts of Cuse Hosting again?

Quarter finals is the much more realistic goal I would say. Lately they seem to prefer locations downstate as they are slightly more accessible for teams/fans along the east coast. Not saying it is impossible but I do not see it happening in the near future. Certainly would not mind if it happens, but Cuse would also likely play somewhere else in the quarter finals if they were in the tourney and made it that far. Would love a good old fashioned first round home game for starters!

Did we ever bid on the Quarterfinals before?

Maybe because of the lack of air-conditioning?

As the lower 6th seed in 2003, they "hosted" #4 Princeton in the Quarterfinals. SU won 15-5.

That was just one game, right.

It wasn't a 4 team pod.

Ironically, the Dome hosted the Women's Final Four that year on May 16 & 18, which was won by Princeton.

I went back and found the bracket and the other game in that bracket was Maryland/UMass.

I'm not aware of there ever being a quarterfinal site that only had one game versus two but I could be wrong.

In 2003 the southern site was Towson, MD and I remember going to those games (Hopkins beat Towson and Virginia beat Georgetown).

And I have no recollection of that weekend.

They say the mind is the 2nd thing that goes soft. ;)

High Point does have some good players coming back. They return 3 of their top four leading scorers including Jack VanOverbeke (78 points), Brayden Maya (62), Nick Rizzo (33) and Jack Sawyer (32). They are also due to get their main FOGO back, Colin Hoben who finished at 55% last year with 123 groundballs. Goalie is definitely a question for them as they didn't have a keeper with a 50% save percentage last year.

They did play some good teams last year, Duke, Georgetown, UNC, Richmond and St. Joe's. They were able to beat St. Joe's twice, but they lost pretty handily to everyone else: 8-20 against Duke, 10-22 vs Georgetown, 9-16 vs UNC, and 9-13 and 8-15 vs Richmond.

I don't think it's the worst matchup in the world, but not one of the first I would have chosen. They remind me a lot of a team like Albany, who won't do much for your RPI but who could definitely cause headaches if the ball bounces funny. I think it's important that if they are going to have teams like Albany, Hobart and High Point on the schedule, there really can't be any teams with an RPI in the 50s or 60s. Also would have been nice to schedule this as a road game early in the year, given that one would think the weather down in NC would be halfway decent. I personally think it would be good to get the team on the road a little sooner in the year.

The Maryland/UMass game was at the Dome too. 13-7. Maryland.

I looked that up. SU was actually the #5 seed. Maybe they had the game at home due to Princeton graduation.

I could see why SU would not pursue hosting this year. They are going to have a hard time getting the new seats in place over the summer and losing a couple of weeks to host the NCAA quarters would make a tough schedule much harder.

Hoping they start getting more aggressive going after hosting opportunities for lacrosse and basketball once the new seats are in place.

I'd love to see the PLL come here for a weekend.

Since Rabil hates Syracuse, it's a non-starter.

Gary and Paul have a good relationship. Albany has shown that Upstate supports the league. A PLL weekend may not be out of the question.
