Now THAT is a great hire
In his defense, he played patsies with patsies, now he’s going to play top level talent with top level talentChesney is a good coach, but he's going from playing patsies to playing Michigan and Oregon.
UVA will be coming off a 10 win season and ACC championship game appearance, Mike Locksley just got an extension. Those coaches aren’t going anywhere next year.Seems like a bad fit. You might see UVA, Maryland, UNC open up next year. I would have stayed for that. Unless the cupboard is at JMU.

If he has another good season at UVA other schools will look to poach him. Locksley is only under contract through 2028, it would be 2 years buyout.UVA will be coming off a 10 win season and ACC championship game appearance, Mike Locksley just got an extension. Except UCLA generally does not get top talent. The program is second class in its own city and beyond a few fun weeks this season and bringing in Nico, they are an afterthought. In his defense, he played patsies with patsies, now he’s going to play top level talent with top level talent
Given the horrific way that Kiffin left Ole Miss, and the equally terrible way LSU handled the Brian Kelly firing, can we all agree that the good ol’ “who will want to coach here if we treat Paul/Greg/Scott/Dino/Fran that way?” is a ridiculous argument?
Coaches clearly don’t care at all how insane a school is, or how they treated the guy they canned that opened up a job. All a HC coach cares about is advancement and money. Period. Literally nothing else.
They’ve had a couple top 25 classes recently according to 247, I don’t think it’s very hard to sell “come play at UCLA where they’ve made movies about how hot our female students are” and it doesn’t hurt that they’ll get to play in sofiExcept UCLA generally does not get top talent. The move to Sofi will be good. I don’t know, good coaches sometimes don’t work out because they took the wrong gig. By that logic you could say that most jobs beyond the top 15 could become open, and I don’t really get the probability that Locksley could be gone after the first year of an extension. And whatever financial issues UCLA might have (if any) they pale in comparison to Maryland’s.If he has another good season at UVA other schools will look to poach him. Ok my bad. They announced last month they’re bringing him back and devoting more financial resources to the program.Since when did he get an extension this year?
Bingo.UCLA fired their coach (and alum) after just 15 games!
They have no fans at their games.
Chesney didn't think twice before accepting that job.
He's a PA guy right? Had to think PSU was going to call when their options dried up. Guy knows what he is doing but this fit seems off.Yep but UCLA is a dumpster fire of an athletic department. Hope it works out for him but seems like he could have done better, maybe next year if not now
On Dan Patrick this AM, Andy Staples, who is very knowledgeable about such things, said that the NCAA presented a plan a couple of years ago that would have changed the D-I calendar and solved most of this, but it was vetoed by the coaches, who want their rosters set by the beginning of the second semester (late January). They could fix all of this by just changing the timelines. But now that signing day starts Dec 3, and only one portal window from Jan 2-12, they basically did this to themselves.
I mean, how did they think it would go?
This sport's leadership is rudderless and full of greed.
Prior to this season thought uva coach would be fired with another bad season. Did great this year which will get him an extension. I see this being a Dino situation in the end.If he has another good season at UVA other schools will look to poach him. Locksley is only under contract through 2028, it would be 2 years buyout.
