2025 Preseason Camp Thread

To me, it goes back to what was said from the time Angeli transferred. He's not leaving ND to sit. He already has a degree from ND and he could have done that there. He left for one reason, to be a. Starting Quarterback. Also some players are gamers. They bring it to a different level then they are capable of in practice, based off the small but significant (CFP) sample size we seen- Angeli appears to be that player. He also looks to be the more mature of the two, which will be needed this season when faced with adversity.

Giving up 170 yards on 7 carries is not a great sign for the defense though. The long runs were an issue last year.
Not sure this is any statement against the starting D. We have no idea who was playing when he had those runs. We know a walkon oline man was playing.

On the other hand, it might have been the starting D. On yet another hand (how many do I have?), it might be a reflection that our defensive depth is not what it is cracked up to be yet either... if the second string offense can gash the second string defense. 7 carries, plus another 4 negative plays, plus two receptions... equals a lot of attempts to be just the last few minutes of the scrimmage or garbage time.

This is the trouble with scrimmages like this... if your offense stinks, the defense looks better than it should; if your defense stinks, the offense looks better than it should. And, before you know it, you are a snowball trying to catch fire or a little train that could. Yes, the GRob era has permanently scarred me...

In fairness it was the first year with a new system and some of the players were forced to play out of position. Also, when you lose players, you replace them. The D Line as a whole is drastically upgraded and thats where run defense starts. Marlowe was hurt for half the year so that was also a huge issue. Gary Bryant would have been the second best LB on the team last year and is going to be a very suitable replacement for Wax. The secondary is much deeper and the young guys had a full year to gain needed size and strength. This team is going to be significantly more physical.
Agree with this. Strength of d line dictates a lot of what else happens. DT and corners don’t really account for many tackles, and tackling production from Bellamy, Lewis and Watson will be the easiest to replace. They were #8, #9, and #10 in tackles last year for us. None of our top 7 tacklers played DT or Corner. (That is normal). And as you said, Wax missed 1/2 the year. Also Diggs was often out of position as a DE or used as a spy, and did not account for as many tackles as he could have. (Only one DE was in the top 60 in tackles in the entire ACC, and he was a high draft pick)

Tackling is all about how we are up the middle

I don’t think there’s a drop off at corner or linebacker, or DE. Most worried about Safety/Star.

Barron will be missed, and Clark too.

We lost Diggs, Barron, Clark, Wax, Bellamy, Watson, Lewis from a team that couldnt tackle, was undisciplined, couldnt stop the run and let up huge plays. TI dont see how the defense will be better against even better teams.
On the flip side Wax played half the season and other than Diggs, the others didn't really make any game changing plays. This is college football and every team has significant losses year to year. And now this is the portal era so teams have even more losses every year now. We are year two in a new defensive scheme so its entirely possible and maybe even likely that the players and Elijah Robinson as a first time solo coordinator, look better in year 2.

Guys who are not playing together and getting snaps together, even though they are “second team”, often look much worse as a sum total than the individual parts.

The Eagles are a team full of NFL players who could only muster 88 total yards of offense playing second/ third teamers together last game, (vs other back ups too). So who knows what the circumstances were for the big yardage Gained by Malachi.

I usually go by “believe half of what you see and none of what you hear”.

For example, Three or four so-called media “experts” tweeted or reported that Collins had separated himself in the QB battle, and he was going to start.

I said 3 pass rushers and he is not as good as Diggs
You are looking at Diggs through eyes of know what his production was at SU his final season.
Diggs sack stats before coming to SU. 2022 had 1 sack, 2022 had 3 sacks, 2023 had 4 sacks.
Reese sack stats before coming to SU. 2023 had 6.5 sacks, 2024 had 4.5 sacks and i think that was in a reserve role. So not sure we know that this comment is correct yet.

I am going to take the opposite side on Pete being given the scoop. It does nothing to build up a relationship with the guys that cover the team every day. They are working every day to give the program coverage. And when something of really note happens, boom, they give the scoop to a national guy. I know Pete was a Syracuse guy. But he doesn't do anything to help the program locally. I see way too much of this sort of thing.

I mentioned this to a friend the other day but Fran has really gone full Dino with the camp reporting so far this summer. Feel like unless we've gotten a report from someone who attended a practice we have no clue how everything is going thus far.
I don't mind it, I think he probably regrets naming Rickie the starter after the spring (regret may be a strong word, but it probably caused him headaches being asked about it constantly) and a few other very minor slip ups in the media that have him wanting to just lock things down.

you're proving your naivety and don't seem to understand what the defense was trying to do up front all last year. You do not expect a pass rush and sacks with 3-4 lineman when you're dropping 7-8 guys. The DL has to stay in their lane and contain. They are not bringing a full bull rush to the QB most plays because then there's no contain. Yes they want to beat their man but they have to be smart.

The # of people that have no idea how the trenches work is so frustrating. All people want to look at is sacks or or QB hurries as a measure of pass rush. Rarely do D Lineman ever get credit for this because they hold their man down and stay in their lane while the LB's and Secondary bring blitzes and make plays. That's by design it's not because the DL was just not good at pass rushing.

I’m confused by the Fran has gone full Dino with camp reporting. If you meant it by this summer is different than last, yes it was. We have more spring window portal players competing for starting jobs including at QB. I wonder if he opens up even more to the media today, now that the main question mark has been settled for now and the rest of the pieces will fall into place the way they should since the QB starter has been named. Also, it seems like the comment around we are only getting reports from people who attended practice. Would those same people even be allowed into practice?

I certainly don't know but It could be a statement against DE depth however. I think of Malachi James as running plays mostly outside the tackles as that is mostly what he had done in HS. I wouldn't be surprised if the issues were DE's losing outside containment. All just speculation on my part but that it what I first thought of when i read it.

Also all coaches have talked to media still

It does seem that way. I would guess its mostly due to the QB battle in an effort to control that a little better.

Local coverage obviously is beneficial in many ways. But it could be Pete gives Fran other valuable information that he otherwise wouldn't get so that is his way of helping him out in return.
