Syracuse football head coach Scott Shafer details how the Orange have altered their practice routine to help better prepare the team for the upcoming 2015 season.

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer dropped an interest tidbit on Monday after day two of training camp. He revealed a change in the way the Orange practice day-to-day. It’s a shift not only in the number of reps, but how they go through drills and help bring the youngsters along.
”What we’re doing this year is we’re kind of having a veteran practice and then following that up with a little freshmen work at the end,” Shafer said. “I really like the process with the freshmen because we get some one-on-one time with them as coaches. We can slow it down a little bit. Gear it down a little bit. They’ve been good. It’s a good group.
”We’d split fields a little bit more last year. This year we’re a little bit more condensed. The whole mindset now is fewer reps but more coaching, more technique work. Not being in a hurry up type mindset. Gives the coaches that opportunity to coach that five or six seconds of the play harder. Kids should be able to go harder because the practices are a little bit different than they were.
”Then by separating the young guys, it’s not just the freshmen, after practice, but kids that are maybe third or fourth on the depth chart. We’ve done it in the past other places I’ve been. It’s a model that Bill Walsh used when he was with the 49ers. Ninety minutes but it’s high execution. Trying to be perfect on every play with the techniques that are put forth to match the scheme. So far it’s been working out well. I like the look and I think it’ll give us the opportunity to work real hard in the weight room so we don’t lose the weight that was gained in the offseason.”
Coach Shafer added that when they are working with the freshmen, the veterans go back and get treatment as well as any cold tub time they may need. He said the time with the youngsters is only about 15-20 minutes long. Coach Shafer hopes this will help calm the freshmen a bit as well.
He really likes the process and believes it will help the team in terms of conditioning, health and execution going forward.

Quarterbacks worked on footwork and sliding in the pocket. Freshman Kenterius Womack made a mistake and was asked to do push-ups.

The offensive line continued to work on first and second steps. Coach Joe Adam mixed in three cadences regularly.

OL Keaton Darney, Cody Conway and Colin Byrne all jumped on secondary cadences during positional work.

RSr. left tackle Ivan Foy was fairly vocal, reiterating each cadence before each snap. Veterans looked solid in the short drill session.

K Cole Murphy, H Riley Dixon and LS Matt Keller composed the first-team FG unit. Went 3/3 on chip shots.

K Ryan Norton, H Zack Mahoney and LS Keith Mitsuuchi composed the second-team FG unit. They went 1/2 from 37 yards. Norton missed right.

K Sterling Hofrichter, H Eric Dungey and LS Nathan Hines composed the third-team FG unit. Hofrichter went 2/2 on chip shots.

Freshman hybrid Tyrone Perkins wore a white jersey again. Shafer said that's just for coaches to be able to spot him. Coming off ACL tear.

The offense was just going into 11-on-0s when the open portion of practice ended. So unfortunately & as expected, not much to report there.

Talking with Lester tonight. The freshmen are definitely on my list of topics.

Womack was 'asked' to do pushups?
Shafer is a pretty polite fellow.

Notes from 20 minutes of open practice: Antwan Cordy didn't catch punts today after being part of a six-player group to do so yesterday

Trio of Cole Murphy (K), Matt Keller (long-snapper) and Riley Dixon (holder) looked to be current 1st-team FG unit. Went 3-for-3 together.

Tim Daoust and Chuck Bullough were very deliberate working with young D-linemen. Amir Ealey got a lot of attention in positional drills.

And maybe most interestingly, a drone with a camera attached flew over the practice field. Had to land during FGs to avoid being hit.

Syracuse football training camp continued on Tuesday. Here are some news, notes and observations from the session of practice open to the media.

-First day for shoulder pads for all players

-Defense working on blitzing packages, a staple of their defensive scheme.

-Specifically, true freshmen Jake Pickard, Steven Clark and Kenny Carter all showed impressive strength and agility during individual drills.

-A lot of agility and explosion drills today particularly for the defensive positions.

-Neither Cordy nor Ishmael were seen fielding punts after being part of that drill on Monday. Brisly Estime is still the favorite to land the job. Freshman Dontae Strickland is a darkhorse.

-Long snappers working with holders and kickers to refine timing on place kicking. Starting unit went 3/3 on attempts and consisted of Cole Murphy at kicker, Riley Dixon as the holder and Matt Keller as the long snapper. Second string was Ryan Norton, Zack Mahoney and Keith Mitsuuchi and went 1/2. Third string was 2/2 behind Sterling Hofrichter, Eric Dungey and Nate Hines.

Again more short routes for QB's to throw.

-Centers working on snap counts and calls. They varied cadences multiple times with Joe Adam specifically working on that with the offensive linemen.

Scholarship long snapper Matt Keller worked with the first team. All eight snaps were solid.

Estime praised by Bobby Accosta for fielding a tricky punt with ease. McGloster got barked at for leaning wrong way blocking with FG unit

The punt return group was pared down to five. Estime, Philips, Williams, Strickland and Fredericks. No major issues there.

I've only been reading the football forums sporadically the last few months and may have missed something -- but what's up with Denzel Ward? When he committed it sounded like he'd redshirt then be a four-year starter, but so far this pre-season, nothing (that I've seed) has been said of him.

Needs to lose weight, not ready.

Agreed- I dont know what to think about a lot of this. There was supposed to be a big upside with McGlouster, Lasker and Ward. I dont know if this speaks more to that we have a better OL than we thought or the lack of development of players or more likely a little of both.

If we can limit injuries and keep a cohesive group, and maybe use at least 3 cadences, then maybe the Oline we have will be better off

Daoust on freshman long-snapper Matt Keller: "Came here on scholarship to be the long-snapper and he's doing a good job."
