A New Tradition

I've brought burning Scottish flags, singing "God Save the Queen," and decorating my toilet with pictures of William Wallace and smashed VHS tapes of Braveheart? Or I've brought a dislike of haggis and Guinness?

Guinness - wow now you’ve done it!

There’s a difference between anger and pointing out something dumb. I’m not mad at the guy. I’d gladly have beers with him, as I would anyone else whose over 21 and associated w/ SU FB. But this “tradition” is dumb, and it in no way markets Syracuse in a way that’s conducive to getting top tier athletes to play here.

Don’t believe me. Look around the SEC, and let me know how they dress. They’re the guys winning, and they’re the guys who are getting the top recruits. Why unnecessarily deviate from a proven formula?

I’ll be the first to admit that it’s unlikely that this one random guy is costing us recruits due to his appearance *in and of itself,* but pretending like it’s not a potential paper cut is wrong, as is pretending like paper cuts don’t add up.

My singular goal for the program is to win. I’m pro anything that advances that cause, even if it sends a bunch of message board SJW’s into a tizzy, and I’m gainst anything that opposes it, again even if it means sending some paper skinned posters to their safe spaces. I don’t see kilts as being in the pro-win column. So why promote it?
It's literally just the guy wearing a kilt it has nothing to do with anything other than it's a new tradition. You actually think the article is trying to say this will help cuse win?

Not to be too pedantic, but a kilt is an article of clothing. It is neither smart nor dumb.
Wearing a kilt is a choice. I don't think any man wearing a kilt feels less of a man for doing so. So, why does it offend your sensibilities?
You're certainly entitled to your opinion as this is an open message board, and I have found other posts of yours entertaining and you are clearly an Orange fan. But I hope you appreciate that this seems to say more about you than Coach Chirco's choice.
Finally, the article is brief and clearly not a negative piece, so any press of a neutral or positive nature towards SU Football is a positive, IMO. I don't think you have to worry about our "Brand" becoming conflated with wearing kilts, do you?
By the way, I am well over 25 years old...so it isn't just young people who are taken aback by your statement.
Finally, and respectfully, I will cheer loudly with you in spirit this evening when the real battle is fought!
It offends my sensibilities because we don't agree about the bold part, and you're right about the underlined part.

And to be clear, unlike multiple posters on this thread, I'm not threatening anyone directly or (hilariously) indirectly. As with anyone else, the guy can wear whatever he wants. As I mentioned earlier, I'd gladly get drinks with him, and I'd even buy him the first round. I, however, can disagree with what he wears while he represents SU, and to be clear, I will disagree with it to the extent that I think it's in opposition to at least one of my goals (SU football being good again).

For what it's worth, I would say the exact same thing if someone came out of the tunnel in a Penn State shirt, WVU pants, VT face paint, or a Boston College hat.

Also for what it's worth, this forum is more than welcome to disagree with my proclivity for wearing jeans and an orange shirt in public on game day. It won't change anything, but I also won't throw a self-righteous fit (not that you did - I'm more referencing other posters).

I didn't say anything about the article. I just said that a better tradition would be dressing normally, and then in a later post, I said making bowl games would be a great tradition. I stand by those comments. We are better off differentiating ourselves by creating (continuing) a winning tradition than trying to differentiate ourselves through cheap gimmicks and peacocking.

Neither.

Basically you’ve brought nothing other to football today than what can be called...”no shlit, you don’t say?? Win?!! Hadn’t thought of that!!!”...takes.

While poorly trying to defend your stupid take that a little harmless article about a tradition our coach has done previously, and is now working again...is stupid and for some reason, you advised us not to use it on Wall St or wherever.

Thanks...

I guess...

It's a coach lightening the mood. If it was a big deal or was keeping the team from paying attention to the game, do you think Dino would allow it?

We get you don't care for it. Wonderful. I think it's kind of cool personally.

It's better than some of the things that make the media for teams starting new traditions.

You mean like uh...I don’t know...really tacky turnover chains or, even worse, turnover backpacks???

This needs to be a thing. I can then join the actors at the Ren Faire in trying to get PAcuse to buy one.

I appreciate your reply. While I disagree about the potential impact of kilt-wearing, I agree with, or understand, everything else you said. And, we don't need to agree. That's why they're called opinions. An opinion is neither right nor wrong, it is either shared or not.

And, yeah, I think Guinness is overrated, too!;)

Enjoy the game!

There's really good sketch material in there about a football team that has a really embarrassing hype up award for making a play.

You’ve sounded like a bully throughout the entire thread. Yeah, two wrongs don’t make a right with people taking cheap shots at you and making veiled threats. However, the suicide rates for young boys and men have been driven through the roof by machismo bullying. That is the example you have set by complaining about guys wearing skirts and how it’s not manly. Who cares? Does it affect your ability to pursue happiness?

From kilts are dumb, to aiding in killing boys, and men, in 3 pages...

Wow.

He doesn't like kilts. So what? When did everyone get so offended by EVERYTHING?

It’s not what was said. It is how it was said.

He thought kilts made you look like a clown. And then everyone attacked him with machismo bullying. Telling him to leave, calling him a punk, etc. If that's what you are talking about? Ok, then.

I'm surprised people can't have fun talking about a dude wearing a kilt. That's why he has to wear one. ;-). Of course, I guess that's bullying, too
. (No it's not. It's fun)

Actually he said the assistant S&C coach looked like a clown.

A young coach who’s doing a whole lot more to get the program winning again than some chooch in Illinois calling him a clown for wearing a kilt as the low man on the totem pole.

I couldn’t care less about kilts. But this isn’t some poster saying kilts stink. He’s calling a young member of the coaching staff a clown for wearing one.

That’s a wee bit on the douchey end of the spectrum.

Yeah. This.

Yeah, I think people were douchey to him, because they disagreed with his opinion(and adding that behavior may contribute to the suicide rate). It's a kilt. Who cares?

Try taking a couple deep breaths before you post. If you have to cuss and insult the other person to make your point, then it isn’t a strong one.

The kilt wearing isn’t culturally aligned with the areas of this country that produce good football as evidenced by the fact that none of them wear kilts. It’s also a weirdly juvenile act, as evidence that kilt wearing isn’t widely accepted in society. Walk around and tally up the kilt vs pants ratio that you see. It makes us look weird in an industry where we sell our image to fans and recruits. Remember, we can’t ‘buy’ players like the pros can, and also unlike the pros, we have a highly concentrated marketplace (~130 teams vs ~30). Doing something that outlandish just to grab attention is immature. Compare the styles of older men to younger men, and more often than not, younger men’s clothes will be more attention-grabbing.

Based on the above, we should absolutely not expand this “tradition.” We should, however, work to gain awareness of our program through other, genuine, and positive means.

I get that this is clearly a topic that’s weirdly close to your heart, but you’re on the wrong side of society. Look around. It’s significantly easier to go with the market/world than to try to change it, esp. when the proposed change is unnecessary and doesn’t benefit us in any clear way.

I said he *looks* like a clown.

This is where grammar matters. Our entire team looks like a clown brigade when we wear silly uniforms. That doesn’t make everyone on the team a clown, does it?

And to be very clear. I’m anti-kilt. I’m the guy arguing *against* basing the low guy on the totem pole.

But hey, it’s 2018. Who needs to read when you can just make things up while you’re on a witch hunt, right?

I don’t know what to say other than I’ll have what you’re drinking.

I get that it’s 2018, but good Lord. I’m not the one threatening anybody. To be clear, I’m the guy being threatened for saying wearing kilts is a dumb thing to do when you’re a SU FB coach. Ironically, I can virtually guarantee everyone arguing with me agrees with my stance deep down, seeing as its incredibly likely that 0 of them wear kilts on a regular basis.

Your post sums up most of what’s wrong with society. This thread is a race to be a victim. Now you’re blaming me, the guy literally (and hilariously) being threatened (which I’m actually OK with - I’m all for free speech), for causing suicides on account of me expressing widely accepted societal norms. Get over yourself.
