At the major college level, most coaches can coach. They can analyze tape and they know there position grouping techniques to teach. Yes, even our Coach Cavanaugh. What separates the Truly great coaching staffs from average staffs are the ability to diagnose problems and implement the correct fix actions that lead to tangible results that can be seen on tape.
Coaching staffs have what I call "inter-position philosophies" that when put together lead to the larger offensive and defensive philosophy a staff wants to execute. This is why position coaches try and get recruits that "fit" there inter-position philosophies through size measurements, similar HS offense or athleticism that pops for the position group on tape. Once they get them on Campus, its all about strength/weight training and then learning the proper techniques and terminology used to be effective. All staffs do this. I think most people understand this.
Above average coaching staffs separate themselves in the way they diagnose problems, the way they implement fix actions, and are detailed and honest about what they are seeing on tape against all opponents. I have seen our staff implement incremental changes to game-plans week to week and do some of the things that I believe are representative of an above average coaching staff but have also seen some things that I believe do not equate to an above average staff.
I have seen certain position groups that have not performed since the staff has been assembled. Some of this has been talent, some of this has been size and speed. I have also seen a staff that has been slow to make any changes to a position group that is underperforming. I can go back to last year when finally after 3 weeks of getting killed on run defense.. something everyone could see.. they started rotating SHY in and it got incrementally better from there.
We have not been able to run the ball effectively since the staff was assembled. Some of it is talent but I really believe some of it is philosophy, matched with techniques, matched with diagnosing the problems and applying the correct fix actions. I believe the RPO with Dungey last year did in fact mask some of these things because he could make plays all day when things broke down. Watch the Clemson and UL game.. watch the OL closely on both teams.. watch the player movement.. what do you see? they do not look like our OL does. I am in the camp that our OL personnel are not nearly as bad as they have played.. are they above average? probably not but I have seen MAC teams and even FCS teams that look to have better execution across the board on the OL. I believe what we are seeing is a misdiagnosis of cause/effect and fix actions when combining our talent with "inter position" philosophy, techniques employed, and even some of the play design on offense for our OL. Do not get me wrong, TD's inexperience and the pretty obvious fact that he now has happy feet and struggles to see the field properly on some plays has definitely created some issues. BUT The larger problems I mentioned before hand have pretty much caused the disaster we are seeing on offense this year as I believe that although he makes some mistakes, if he has some time, TD can generally be a lot more effective than we have seen.
A huge issue for me, and one I brought up after last weeks disappointment wit NC ST, is that what was obvious to most, did not appear to be addressed when we had a bye week, or the fixes implemented had zero affect on the outcome of our OL play. This is why I question the staff... having the awareness to know your talent, identify the issues(easy part), and then modifying what we are doing with the OL to get the play up to some form of acceptable level. We DO NOT have the worst talent on the OL in Div 1 football but are playing like it and have played like it all year and the issues could be seen in the first game.
I think we have a focus issue... both players and coaches and YES this is on Dino now... he is the captain of the ship, This is his offense, he needs to get involved in every detail to find out where the issues are, what the fixes have been up to now.. and what the fixes are going to be going forward and THEN determine if changes need to be made on the staff at the end of the year. My point is the OL play should never have gotten as bad as what we have seen this year and even more importantly going forward, why has almost no improvement been seen week to week. Above average staffs DO NOT GO through 7 weeks of zero progress when fixing a position group that is under performing to the level we are. We do not have 5 RS freshman starting and as I said I do not believe for a second our talent is this bad.
Dino is an above average head coach IMO but as a staff we are not performing like it this year...
