ACC coming to NYC?

The Barclays Center selected the ACC over the Big Ten, which has added Maryland and Rutgers to its conference membership. Both conferences may hold later tournaments in Brooklyn, but the ACC will come first.

This is the most important part of the article. It is becoming clear that the B1G wants to compete in NYC. The ACC has to meet that challenge. I am concerned that the old southern core of the ACC will underestimate the importance of striving to become the primary college basketball presence in the Big Apple.

That was the beauty of playing in MSG. A simple train ride for most people from NJ and NY and you are there. No need to walk outside, take the subway, etc. Brooklyn is another story.

I'm glad it's in the NYC area. But Barclay's is disappointing.

The epicenter of it all is Manhattan. The Garden has the most history. It's the easiest to get to.

Brooklyn is fine enough, but you don't want to play in the minors after being in the majors. But I guess Greensboro would be the beer league comparatively (nothing against it, just the power of the location).

But I'm biased, I live in Manhattan. I love it. To me, Brooklyn will always be the little brother. An I'm not sure that if I'm spending all my money I want to be tethered to an outer borough so much if I'm traveling from outside the city.

Again, just me.

Ahh. You're definitely from Upstate. I'll race you from Barclays to the Village. Just across the Brooklyn Bridge and you've got Little Italy and China Town, but no need to grab a cab. Check.

ok. let's make it a race and I'll bet you the cost of ACC tourney tix. 1 stop from 33rd st. on the 2/3 to 14th st. and I'll walk up either south corner steps (since 14th st. separates the village from chelsea)

Historically that is true. Primarily due to Harlem. But the Harlem of the globetrotters is nearly gone.

I would argue that today the new epicenter is Brooklyn. From Michael Jordan to Melo, with Bernard King as the local hero. MSG failed to meet the challenge and provide us with a new modern arena. Brooklyn's day has come.

Who has been to Barclays and what are your impressions?

i live down the street. its much more comparable to the boston garden then msg. the upper deck seems very steep and high up. its a bit scary for whimps like me who are afraid of heights. the food is great inside the arena. also, the neighborhood is great. the bars aren't as spacious as the midtown managattan ones but there is a great sports bar down the street called 200 5th that is large and has a cuse contingent.

Cannot get there from Bayside, so not loving that (not like it matters anymore). I love MSG, but let's not pretend that the area around there is actually nice. It's all rather seedy. I just find it funny that if this is true the sweater vest and penny loafer crowd of the ACC will be trolling hipster bars in Brooklyn.

That will be funny. Like others said it is better than Greensboro and a start.

Brooklyn is another story.

dude, the barclays center is right outside atlantic terminal which essentially EVERY subway line feeds into along w the long island rr. this is not an issue.

Uh, UEO stands for Upper East(side) Orange.

You barked up the wrong tree.
can i count on you to practice racing accross the Brooklyn Bridge against??

if im jogging to chinatown from brooklyn and then to lil italy, ill need to map out a good route.

especially in mid march.

id rosie ruiz it, but i fear the traffic on the BB around 5 on weeknights is not a joy.

is swish and his pony gonna be there?

Been to Brooklyn in the last 5 years?

Yep. But not to Barclays. It can be the greatest arena in the world, still not the same as MSG and Manhattan. Better than any of those NC cities which I think everyone agrees in that. It's a good 2nd choice to MSG.

I live in Manhattan. I am familiar with it. But I know for damn sure people like my parents (who went to the BET numerous times in the past) will not want to take a 2 hr train ride into the garden from NJ, then have to jump on a subway. You are underestimating how intimidating the subway is for people not familiar with it.

CHAPEL HILL – Sources close to the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn say the two parties have agreed to stage a future ACC Basketball Tournament at the brand new home of the Brooklyn Nets.

The ACC will vote on holding the tournament in New York Tuesday, but the sources say that the agreement has been made and the vote is a mere formality. Due to the addition of former Big East schools Notre Dame, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the ACC is anxious to play a tournament in the northeast.

The Barclays Center selected the ACC over the Big Ten, which has added Maryland and Rutgers to its conference membership. Both conferences may hold later tournaments in Brooklyn, but the ACC will come first.

The exact year the ACC Tournament will be played in Brooklyn has not been determined, but it will be at the Barclays Center and not Madison Square Garden. The 2014 and 2015 ACC Tournaments will be played in Greensboro. The 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Tournament will be held at Washington, D.C.’s Verizon Center, the ACC announced November 14.

The 2017-21 tournament sites have not been determined, but one of those years it will be New York and the Barclays Center.

Went to Brooklyn by subway during my time at the last BET in March. Didn't stop at the Barclay's Center (actually went to Spumoni Gardens) but noted it was right off the subway and relatively easy to get to.

I don't know what the neighborhood around it is like it but from what I have seen and heard, Brooklyn has a lot of interesting places worth visiting and I would look forward to attending an ACC tournament there.

Haven't been in the Barclay's either but if it is anything like all the other newer arenas I have been in, it will have a wide open concourse, be very easy to get around and the seats will be much closer to the court.

MSG addressed some of the warts that detracted from the MSG experience with the recent renovation (the lobby is finally somewhat decent, it is a little easier to walk around now and the new open areas behind the concourses were desperately needed). Still, it feels constricted, tight, and out of date compared to newer arenas. I still dislike the seating design greatly. The seats are way too far from the court, the angles for the seats are way too flat and there is no sense of intimacy unless you have Spike Lee type tickets.

But with all that, more than anywhere, New York is Manhattan. There is still magic in the arena, the bars around it are awesome and the walk up to the theatre district after a Syracuse win after midnight remains a wonderful treat.

That arena, that city deserve the best conference championship featuring the best teams. No offense to the New Big East, which is a good conference, but it should not be the featured show on Broadway in early March. Neither by the end is the B1G, which, while better than the NBE, is already clearly behind the ACC and that gap just increases when the ACC is saddled with the RU and UMd programs and the ACC upgrades from UMd to UL.

It is going to be really interesting to see how the NBE does with their tournament this spring. Right now they have one team in the Top 25, with no other schools even receiving a single vote. They have played poorly in their OOC games and might well have no Top 25 teams by the time their tournament begins. Will they draw good crowds to see that level of product? I can't imagine they will but perhaps I am mistaken. We will find out soon enough.

Agreed. Nowhere did I say Brooklyn is not better than Greensboro.

BTW, I find it a little odd that I haven't seen this story in more prominent places. :noidea:

I may have told this tale before, but I think it bears repeating. . .

At the BET last March, our little group was sitting a row in front of a Villanova contingent (who basically humbled me when I came across boastful because of my ~23 years at the tournament--one had been to all but 3 tourneys at the Garden, the other had missed nary a one. But, anyway, I digress.)

I got into a long conversation with one of the gentlemen, and he expressed great concern about the New BE's ability to hang on to the Garden. He noted small, sometimes blasé, fan bases might have trouble filling the Garden. If there is exit language in the contract, and MSG decides to invoke it, the ACC had better be aggressive in any efforts to lock down the Garden, because, with its large NYC fan base, the B1G will be.

Recently moved from Manhattan after living there 30 years. Brooklyn is literally a 15 min subway ride from the 96th St./BWay stop on the Upper West Side. Its 5 minutes to the Barclays from the 34th St station.
New Yorkers don't get all caught up in the manufactured hype- Brooklyn's always been a trendy, hip place for Manhattanites.
This is REALLY a non-issue, IMO.

All well and good, but the issue is that Barclays is not anywhere near as convenient as MSG. Not by a long shot. Arriving at Penn Station and walking upstairs is as good as it gets. Manhattan is Manhattan. Brooklyn... is not.

But the overarching issue is that Barclays is not MSG. MSG is The World's Most Famous Arena. Period.

The Atlantic Terminal stop serves EVERY line from Manhattan. You walk up the stairs and walk into Barclays, literally the same as at MSG. Travel & access is not the issue, IMO.
I agree that MSG is MSG, nothing will ever top that. But this whole "Brooklyn is Brooklyn, Manhattan is Manhattan" stuff, is waaay overblown.
Its hype used to foment a rivalry that in my long experience as a resident of the 5 boroughs, simply is not that big a deal. Not many NY'ers go on anti-Brooklyn rants...unless its on the net. JMHO.

Simply put...

Haz any of youse brain surgeons figured out that this is a shot across the bow to Dolan and MSG?

The ACC basically told Dolan and if you want us you better relax your terms.

After 1 or 2 years the New Big East will be playing in front of 8-12k folks for the championship.
