ACC, PAC-12, and BIG alliance / conference realignment

Let's have some perspective: 3B Manny Machado of the SD Padres makes $30M a year (and he is not among the top 10 MLB earners this year). That is one player ... and it shows how small time this all is compared to big-boy, professional sports.
This is what cracks me up above all else. The media companies that pay the conferences for rights are taking in anywhere from $5 to $15 BILLION a year, but the schools are fighting a death match over $20-30 million. They're all so incredibly dumb.

It's sort of wild how many people on Twitter, and here, who saw what happened to the PAC 12, knows how vulnerable Syracuse is, and still oppose this move, which was probably the best shot the conference has to survive.

It was unequivocally the best bad option.

The ACC just fixed its scheduling and now we are going to a market where the MLB and NFL are fleeing from. 2 teams there 1 horrible market worse than Boston and BC in terms of CFB/CBB popularity.

It was 10 years ago we played a 'road' NCAA tournament game against Cal in San Jose and they had literally no home court advantage and fan support.

Everyone will mock the ACC too because of its name 'Atlantic' conference playing games on the Pacific makes every member institution look pathetic.
Give it up please and focus on the facts. This was a strategic move that needed to be made to protect the deal with ESPN and keep the ACC as a power conference. Does it have warts of course it does. This is a protective move that really helps Syracuse who will be left out and in the same position as Oregon State and Washington State if the ACC implodes. This was an excellent move by the ACC.

How long before SMU goes on probation? Those guys are itching to spend money! In all seriousness, Cal and Stanford can compete on the field instantaneously. I’d imagine SMU will catch up rather quickly. It’s not a bad league at all. Those schools were the best options. Is it crazy? Yes. Is it bad for the athletes? Yes. Is it the only thing the ACC could have done? Probably. Let’s hope it works out as well as possible before the eventual other show drops.

What I’d really like to see is SU enhance its own academic standing via association with these outstanding institutions. The ACC is now a powerhouse in that regard. I really don’t mind being a part of the “academic conference” if that’s what the ACC ultimately represents.

Great move by the ACC. At this point the ACC should make sure that they do everything to stick to the letter of the GOR. No negotiations on any school that want to leave. Pay the full amount or go to court.

I absolutely see the court part happening. Adding schools 3,000 miles away provided them the ammunition. UNC’s statement last night will be their opening argument.

Nobody knows what’s going to happen. For years this board talked about the Big 12 dissolving, not the PAC 12.

I personally think the no votes are overvaluing their worth to some of the other conferences.

The landscape changes as time goes on.

The SEC is the only conference that makes sense. They can sit back and do nothing.

We all know the Big Ten looked ridiculous doing this. The Big 12 didn't and added normal schools that are somewhat close to them regionally.

The ACC said hold my beer and one upped everyone on the stupidity. This is by far the worse move that has happened to this point and they just let the Big Ten off the hook for the West Coast nonsense and killing the P12 it won't be them that people laugh at it will be the ACC. I hope the conference gets absolutely roasted and has to go back on this. The Big East kicked out Temple so hopefully some of that starts happening.

1. Temple was a Football Only member with no voting rights.

2. Temple only drew 10-15K attendance, well below the BE's minimum requirement.

Notre Dame needs to join for football...ACC should be doing everything in their power to get them to. The conference needs a football brand name torch bearer for when Clemson and FSU inevitably leave

Just when they fix the schedule this happens. Who wants to bet Miami never plays an ACC game in the Dome?
Fully support that, couldn’t care less if we never see Miami.

Syracuse sees it as a move that benefits them, not the league. There are colleges today, that if the ACC dissolved, would be poached by the remaining players on the board.

This is helpful context that I didn’t know. I was not aware the the contract could be renegotiated in the event the league dropped below 15 teams.
Yep. They'll still likely need to add 1 more school at some point, since I'd guess UNC will leave with UVA for the B1G. But better 1 than 4.

So these administrators are now telling us they want to be Saturday's version of the NFL.
Play from coast to coast. Big games every week...

Yeah, sure you do.

Don't forget that Oklahoma was slated to play Georgia this year, but they cancelled that upon announcing the OU and Texas were joining in the SEC.

Yet, here are the choices these slap-happy ADs made for their schedules for Week 1 this year. All to collectively protect their jobs and those of their head coaches.

Week One has 88 games, from Thursday through Labor Day Monday.
  • 42 of the 88 matchups are FCS vs FBS games.
  • 28 of the 88 games are G5 @ P5, while only 6 are P5 @ G5 games.
  • Only 10 of the 88 games this week are P5 vs P5.

If they do it will likely be to Apple. That’s the rumor anyway.
I'm interested to see how that affects the sports rights fees for the next cycle. All this crap is happening because the SEC/Big Ten got absolutely huge deals. Had they gap been smaller we probably wouldn't be chatting.
